TheZel66 -> Vehicle Breakdowns in Desert (7/10/2001 7:09:00 PM)

I've been playing the MC for about a week now.. BTW, great job. I've noticed that vehicles tend to break down more often in the MC, than normally. Is it because the battles are in the desert? Do desert settings for battles cause more vehicle breakdowns? It makes sense that it would, I just dont know if the game engine takes that into consderation, and was looking for a confirm on that notion... Cheers,

My long campaign just switched from Europe to the African desert. I find that my vehicles almost never breakdown in the desert. Now that I am in the desert, I regularly move my vehicle their max. move. This is something that I rarely did in Europe. BA Evans

I would think that with all thw sand, dust clouds and storms, breakdowns would be common, plus the strain on the engines going over that rough terrain. there were very few roads in North Africa.

alot would depend on the level of maintenance the vehicles are getting. If the level is high and they've been equipped properly for desert combat (air filters and such) then i'd imagine you could floor the accelerator a tad bit more when fighting on smooth fairly level dunes and such. (non rough terrain) However given the focus of the MC, the vehicles you've been assigned may be in a bit more of a worn condition. Supply was the eternal enemy of the Afrika corps

For what it is worth, my experience has been realistic so far. I had some reinforcements arrive, so they took off way down the road. They get to a curve, check the speedometer (30 mph) and then decide to go off the road into some shell holes! Whooops, breakdown! Now I max it out only when it makes sense to do so, and no breakdowns yet. As a rule of thumb, I keep below 20 mph in open country, with no problems.

A lot depends on the type of terrain, Zel, desert or otherwise. Rough terrain, mud, swamp, marsh, all increase breakdown percentages. Any unit that moves the max is much more prone to a breakdown. A lot of that can be avoided by moving two or three hexes less than the max and picking the terrain you will traverse carefully. What version of SPWAW are you using Zel? Wild Bill
