T18 Soviet Attacks:

16th Army and 2 PG get pushed back a bit by Soviet attacks. Both are the weakest parts of the line for the Axis at this moment. Other attacks elsewhere fail to move the defenders.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:34:49 PM)

T18 Supply Net North:

AGN continues to be stretching the supply lines to the limit as the rains turn heavy and the mud starts to grow.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:36:42 PM)

T18 Supply Net South:

The ports are keeping the southern flank alive and kicking. The rest of the front is doing well.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:38:27 PM)

T18 Air Phase:

The weather worsens so I keep the LW grounded.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:38:51 PM)

T18 Freight:

It is easy to see the effects of the heavy rain and mud. You can also see that AGN is suffering the worst of all of them. Even 4th PG is not getting what it needs any more.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:39:15 PM)

T18 AGN:

But AGN is the most active area at the moment. The 4th PG is capturing more ground and trying to cut Leningrad off from any supply source. 18th Army did not attack Oranienbaum this turn as the troops are tired and the fort level recovers to a 1.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:40:35 PM)

T18 AGC:

I eliminate the pocket. 3rd PG comes to 2nd PG's rescue and beats back the Soviet attackers. 9th, 4th, and 2nd Armies advance towards the retreating Soviet forces.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/8/2021 11:41:53 PM)

T18 AGS:

Kursk is being attacked by the 1st PG. Kharkov is starting to be threatened by the 17th Army. Dnepropetrovsk is isolated by 17th Army and 1st PG. 11th Army is helping the 1st PG threaten Zaporozhye. The Rumanians are securing their hold in the Crimea along with the Italians.

Thanks for writing this AAR and providing the save game files.

1) I noticed in the T1 saves that you advanced ALL of JG 54 and Koluft 18 to Riga. Is there any specific reason for keeping them together on the same airfield?
2) Does flying with your respective Stab. have any in game effect?
3) Again with JG 54 and Koluft 18, you have manually advanced them to Riga on T1 and they are both set to Advance with 4th PG. I found that the AI overrode my manual moves and I had to set them to Hold to get them to stay at Riga. Is there something I am missing here?

sven6345789 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 7:16:51 AM)

very well done AAR indeed!

dudefan -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 8:13:22 AM)

How do you manage to get the rail so close on every front? Do you stack rail repair units to corps hq? What is your method?

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 1:15:50 PM)

Hardradi:

1. Not really. But Riga is a port, it was captured with supplies already, and it has a level 2 airbase. I want the recon closer to the front and I want fighter cover closer to the front so there it is. I usually try for Daugavplis for the fighters, but this time it seemed that the better place was Riga.

2. Yes, it is additional aircraft (although only 1 to 3). It also seems to help with interceptions but that could just be my imagination.

3. If you do not have the AI Air Assist on and you do not use the AI Air Assist button, then the AI will not activate to do anything. This leaves you in complete control and none of that stuff is looked at or considered for anything.

dudefan: My major source of rail repair is the FBDs. I assign one to each PG and keep the PG HQ near them (as in the last depot I have just created) to keep them well supplied and have easy to make leadership rolls which keeps them up and running with little fuss. I do strip each FBD down to only five construction units by removing a surplus RAR Labor unit from the three that start with six construction units. These are added to the seven RAR Labor units that start assigned to the AG HQs. I placed all ten of them into the 18th Army to start with so that the holes in the captured rail hexes in the Baltic can be repaired quickly and give a good rail net throughout the Baltic states. I use one of the Hungarian Infantry Corps HQ attached directly to AGS to hold two or three RAR units later in the game (probably turn 3 or 4) to repair side rail lines in the south and help make that rail net more robust for AOGs and such. The repair units tend to be back from the front rather than pushing the main rail heads out. I try and keep the FBDs repairing double lines heading eastward as much as possible. I am currently using well placed Corps HQs and RAR units in the AGN area right now as my only rail repair units. I am being able to keep three or four rail lines advancing one hex per turn this way. It is not enough and I need to get an FBD unit back up there for real repair support but it just has not worked out that well.

T19 Soviet Attacks:

Even the Soviets are having problems in the heavy mud.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:14:22 PM)

T19 Supply Net North:

AGN still needs a lot of work and I will send some FBDs there as soon as they are done with their current work. The 3rd PG FBD is working its way across the rear of 9th Army while the 2nd PG FBD should start heading north on the double line from Vitebsk next turn.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:14:53 PM)

T19 Supply Net South:

Dnepropetrovsk is isolated and a prime target as it has a level 6 railyard! Things are progressing with the advance on Kursk and Kharkov but that is also taking the combat units away from their depots. A constant struggle. I am hoping that the port of Sevastopol should come online soon but the port is still 74% damaged.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:15:15 PM)

T19 Air Phase:

The rain is in the air so the LW is not.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:15:52 PM)

T19 Freight:

The freight situation is bad as the mud just about makes it impossible for many of the armies to keep in supply.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:16:58 PM)

T19 AGN:

The heavy mud discourages any attacks although 9th Army is advancing where the Soviets retreated.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:17:26 PM)

T19 AGC:

No attacks here either as 2nd PG starts to be able to pull more troops back for refit and rest. 3rd PG is relieved from its front line duty to prepare for the freeze. Only 50 miles to Moscow so we will see what the freeze will allow.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/9/2021 6:17:47 PM)

T19 AGS:

1st PG continues to try and isolate Kursk. 17th Army is advancing on Kharkov and isolating Dnepropetrovsk. 11th Army and 1 PG are trying to also pocket Zaporozhye.

Thank you for your detailed answer regarding rail repair. Great aar

T20 Supply Net North:

AGN is still in a bad situation but it is improving.

Things almost look good here. Still too far with the trucks along the front.

Rain in the air everywhere.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/10/2021 12:55:16 PM)

T20 Freight:

Mud really gets the supply down. Remember that supply need escalates. I need 1500 this turn but only get 1200. Next turn I now need the 300 I did not get last turn but another 1500 and only get 1200 so now I am in the hole for 600. So this is an escalation that may only take a turn or two to recover from, but it is not going to happen often during the mud.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/10/2021 12:55:45 PM)

T20 Trucks:

If you look at this detail towards the bottom of the Freight section you can see that if it was not for all of those captured Soviet Trucks (over 32K) I would be in an impossible situation at the moment. Remember that when you are trying to decide just how many pockets you want to make before the mud arrives.

T20 AGN:

Not much except 16th Army is advancing after the retreating Soviets. 18th Army is pulling a few units back to refit and recover CPP. The rail head is across the Narva River now.

carlkay58 -> RE: Heading East into the Soviet Union (4/10/2021 12:56:55 PM)

T20 AGC:

4th Army has followed the retreating Soviets to the outskirts of Bryansk.
