M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 23 (7/8/2021 4:48:48 AM)

Week 23 - 23 November 1941

Snow on the ground with blizzard conditions north of Velikye Luki. Regular snowfall south of there to just north of Rostov. Around Rostov there is just cold.

In the north, a single German attacks knocks the 253rd Rifle Division of 42nd Army out of Staraya Russa.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/kEyyySn.jpg[/image]

In the center, more German attacks. A slight pullback in along a small part of the front is initiated.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/MIpNFlo.jpg[/image]

The cavalry divisions that will be forming the first eight corps are moving up. Each will be receiving two tank brigades and a naval infantry brigade where possible.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/WeeDpeM.jpg[/image]

More Axis attacks in the south, although nothing in the direction of Rostov.

Since the half million men will be released next week, I have a number of field armies in the reserves with low TOE. Once they are filled, as best as can be managed during the offensive, these armies will be released to the map and replacing a fresh set of low TOE Army HQs. Hopefully as the months progress so long as losses are not too bad, I should be able to replace a lot of missing support squads from the headquarters with low TOE.

M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 24 Final Preparations (7/9/2021 4:42:12 PM)

The half-million fresh troops are released from the reserves. A few Soviet attacks take place as the final movements are completed in preparation for taking the offensive.

Most of the effort for this winter will be to push the German troops back from the Tula-Orel-Kursk Region.

Three fronts, the Western, Bryansk and Central will be the major movers. Leonid Govorov's 40th Army of Southwestern Front will also be lending its weight to the area around Kursk.

If this new line can be established to the west, it will provide better defensive positions for the upcoming summer as well as prolong any late-Spring or early-Summer battles for Orel and Kursk. The final line does not include the city of Bryansk as it is expected that Spring will be right around the corner as this new line is reached an the city itself will almost certainly be well defended.

There is not expected to be much if any airpower used. If the Luftwaffe wants to fly in the foul weather and take the attrition losses for marginal gains, they are welcome to do so.

Weather is off for clarity. There is snow on the ground and snowfall in the air

SparkleyTits -> RE: Week 24 Final Preparations (7/9/2021 4:50:46 PM)

I like your idea of an attack in that sector

He seems to have the majority of his already low AFV numbers here
Forcing them to stay invested in the upcoming heavy engagements is going to have some nice advantages on his 42 capabilities

There is a lot of nice terrain for hinges here though, so really looking forward to this one

Good luck to both of you

very interesting game so far, its been a joy to follow. I suspect the Germans are in for a rather unpleasant winter.

out of curiosity, what mods are you using for the map and the counters?

M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 24 Final Preparations (7/11/2021 3:45:20 PM)

Week 25 - 7 December 1941

Blizzard conditions have broken out from the north down to the area near Bryansk. South of there, regular snowfall and lower snow levels on the ground predominate.

The initial attacks planned for are slow to materialize in this opening week. The German 31st Infantry Division in a level 2 fort holds off two attacks from Western Front's 4th and 20th Armies. What good news that can be taken from this is a level 2 fort was eliminated, and most other German frontline units are in level 1 forts where they will be more vulnerable to weather conditions.

Rokossovsky's 4th Army manages to drive back 1st Panzer Division that has only 48 tanks. The fact that the panzer divisions are already starting out in forward positions is seen as a very positive thing, especially with the lower fort levels. There are also very clearly localized Axis supply issues. The Red Army on the other hand is well supplied for the coming campaign.

Two attacks further south by Malinovsky's 29th Army (Bryansk Front) are successful. These are close to Orel and clearing the enemy from around the city as soon as possible is a priority.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/hFi9NfI.jpg[/image]

OOB. With the manpower influx from last week, the reserves are well stocked.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/8QbKLF9.jpg[/image]

Ground losses. With so few attacks this week, losses are low for both sides.

M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 26 (7/14/2021 2:45:26 AM)

Week 26 - 14 December 1941

Blizzard conditions now extend as far south as Rostov.

Our attacks picked up this week across the Western and Bryansk Fronts, but pockets of resistance have been met.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/5rDKomJ.jpg[/image]

Here 4th Army conducted a hasty attack to determine enemy strength. The main battle resulted in Rokossovsky's 4th Army being held at bay before a follow-on attack successfully broke the defense.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/dJv2NaF.jpg[/image]

Here there was no hasty attack that also required two battles to push back the defenders.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/iW7caMN.jpg[/image]

Here, a hasty attack by Vatutin's 33rd Army is followed up with an attack from Konev's 34th. No success was achieved.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/DScaY6F.jpg[/image]

Another failed attack, this one by by Belov's cavalry corps. Our casualties were heavy here. The support units of one naval infantry brigade and two tank brigades is the standard here.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/DSy2ote.jpg[/image]

In cases where we are winning battles outright, many of these are incurring more losses to the Soviet attackers.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/ArH8h0R.jpg[/image]

One positive note is some of the defenders are retreating into unfortified positions. Let winter do it's worst to them!

M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 26 (7/14/2021 2:50:12 AM)

Two weeks into the winter offensive and some infantry are halfway to guards-eligible status.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/Zpgpu3I.jpg[/image]

xhoel -> RE: Week 26 (7/14/2021 1:59:54 PM)

Nice to see the offensive starting, but am a bit surprised that Dave has Panzer and Motorized formations on the front line. Those guard formations will be helpful once you get them.

PS: Play "Roads to Moscow" in the background as you do your attacks, it sets up a nice atmosphere!

M60A3TTS -> Week 27 (7/14/2021 4:55:14 PM)

Week 27 - 21 December 1941

Another week of attacking but the success rate has increased noticeably. I've managed to root a portion of the German front line out of any sort of fortified positions. Again, we'll just let the winter do it's thing to the Ostheer. The whole thing looks terribly unexciting, but the effects are there even without any sort of breakthrough at all.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/23EHRkn.jpg[/image]

Our tank and mechanized divisions continue to do their work and numerous divisions remain quite healthy in terms of fighting vehicles.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/D17kZVh.jpg[/image]

The cavalry corps are accruing some wins, some faster than others, but each win is a 3-fer. Two tank brigades and the cavalry corps itself all pick up wins on the road to guards status.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/Kzmyf5z.jpg[/image]

The artillery isn't idle either. The core to the artillery support with the Army Artillery Regiments and their ML-20 152mm gun-howitzers rack up their victories.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/G56OGC7.jpg[/image]

All of this does not come without cost. Our losses are over twice that of the Axis and over two thirds of theirs are disabled and eligible to return to action later. Still, this is the price of rebuilding the Red Army in terms of quality with every victory.

Yes, I am counting on generating a goodly number of guards units of all types.

Q-Ball -> RE: Week 26 (7/14/2021 8:33:37 PM)

The Soviet POW count of 1.4 mil seems low for this time....I feel like Axis need to get 2 mil by winter

M60A3TTS -> Week 28 (7/15/2021 5:39:59 PM)

Week 28 - 28 December 1941

The blizzard continues, along with the same pattern of attacks. We have our first guards rifle division now along with the two corps.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/Swueu4m.jpg[/image]

We capture a depot that Dave had created.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/1LJMj9X.jpg[/image]

And a few attacks in the south.

M60A3TTS -> Week 29 (7/15/2021 7:40:08 PM)

Week 29 - 4 January 1942

A week similar to the one prior. The lack of defensive fortifications makes the task of taking ground that much easier. Orel is now clear of enemy units.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/j7GnZKD.jpg[/image]

With the start of 1942, another six cavalry corps are formed.

M60A3TTS -> Week 30 (7/16/2021 8:20:14 PM)

Week 30 - 11 January 1942

The winter grind continues. Blizzard conditions have abated this week and we have regular snowfall.

Rusty1961 -> RE: Week 30 (7/17/2021 1:16:19 PM)

You're very strong at this point. It doesn't appear the Germans will be able to do much in the summer of '42.

M60A3TTS -> Week 31 (7/17/2021 1:39:50 PM)

Week 31 - 18 January 1942

Snowfall is across the front once again as blizzard conditions have relented. Ivan Konev has been promoted to General-Polkovnik.

Success in the north was a little more difficult to come by this week as the troops are needing some rest. The focus now shifts northwest of Kursk where more progress can be made.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/K9nQrav.jpg[/image]

OOB

[image]https://i.imgur.com/4NVbCgE.jpg[/image]

Artillery numbers on map are improving.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/lJtOUCi.jpg[/image]

We now have two guards cavalry corps.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/fGJBw6U.jpg[/image]

M60A3TTS -> Week 32 (7/18/2021 6:31:43 PM)

Week 32 - 25 January 1942

A combination of blizzard and snowfall in the air.

The same pattern of attacks continue. There are wins and losses, and continued fatigue is and will remain an issue.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/r0m29Uv.jpg[/image]

Ground losses almost twice that of the Axis, but they are losses that can be made good.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/yk8S7MB.jpg[/image]

We get some good general officer promotions this week.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/CiKZlGm.jpg[/image]

Guards rifle divisions are now starting to flow, and we have a 3rd Guards Cavalry Corps.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/jWmhFuS.jpg[/image]

One downside this week and that involves our tank divisions. Many of these "upgrade" from on-map divisions to off-map brigades. This causes a reduction of almost 2k AFVs on the map. One nice side effect is that the remaining on-map mech divisions now have a fresh supply of older AFVs to draw from.

Q-Ball -> RE: Week 32 (7/18/2021 9:40:55 PM)

If IIRC, the Production System will also substitute T-26s and BT tanks into "Light Tank" or "Recon Tank" slots if there are not enough T-60 and T-70s available down the road. Which there won't be, because those 2 models for me die in droves in 42/43

So those old tanks are going to get used regardless

I've generally not had issues with running out of the T-60s and T-70s. That may be because I tend not to build the max tank formations allowed to help conserve trucks. If these older tanks were to replace them, they wouldn't make much of a difference because as you say, their life expectancy is so low.

xhoel -> RE: Week 32 (7/19/2021 11:18:21 AM)

Seems like the offensive is giving you some nice Guard units, keep up the good work!

I donīt understand why the game is making some of the Tank Brigade renames though. For example, 130th TB is redesignated as the 3rd TB but 2 rows below it shows that the 3rd TB is also redesignated as 130th TB. Seems like the bug that Maly mentioned before, where weird renames are taking place.

Among my many spreadsheets is one that tracks how many wins the rifle divisions are collecting. At this point I am cherry picking those divisions to get them into battles while other units stay out. Some are still going back to the nearby depots for manpower replacements as needed. Once you get used to working with the CR filters, it only takes a minute or two at the start of each turn to track and the benefits speak for themselves.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/vxklTP3.jpg[/image]

I don't know what is with that re-name situation. It doesn't have a negative impact, so it can be ignored.

M60A3TTS -> Week 33 (7/19/2021 10:27:45 PM)

Week 33 - 1 February 1942

The blizzard conditions have returned and attacks continue. We are starting to close in on our geographic objectives at the start of the month and see no reason why we can't achieve them.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/tmS3TwO.jpg[/image]

The nature of the battles remain largely unchanged. We take the greater losses but outlast the enemy on the battlefield. Then we advance. It is a pure grinding effort, allowing superior numbers, weather, and a lack of firm defensive positions to dictate the outcome of these battles.

M60A3TTS -> RE: Week 33 (7/19/2021 10:34:08 PM)

Here is the detail of another battle where the Red God of War is on full display. A combination of 152mm artillery and 82mm mortar fires are clearing the way for our riflemen. Of course it takes a good commander such as K.K. Rokossovsky to put the steel on target.

I would shoot for higher, "MUCH" higher. I shoot for 3.5 million at a bare minimum. 4 million you keep it real as the Germans.

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: Week 26 (7/20/2021 2:28:09 AM)

I did not see many attacks by Dave during the Winter. Or maybe I am just missing it. I would be attacking every chance I had as Germans in the winter to inflict as many nose bleeds as you can. After awhile the Soviets have to tend to those nose bleeds. But that is just me.

You're right, he hasn't made many. He has had supply issues to work through and maybe that had something to do with it. In any case, he's not taking a lot of permanent losses, so his own numbers will rebound in time.
