What's the logistics situation? Just curious to see the network on the eve of victory.

As you can see the situation is not brilliant but we have managed to sustain the advance. More work is needed in this though (especially in the South)

This might be the only East Front game I've ever witnessed where Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov fell before Odessa.

I know what you mean. In fairness so far in the game only Leningrad is captured. Moscow and Odessa are surrounded (Odessa fall on the next round - spoiler alert [;)]) and Rostov is still fighting on.

I think the reason why Odessa took so long to fall was that I messed up with the naval patrols in the Black Sea. As soon as I was told how to do that things took their turn.

Bamilus -> RE: der Rußlandfeldzug (5/20/2021 4:21:39 PM)

Yea, if you are proactive about taking Odessa (naval patrols, making sure you have enough units and artillery, etc) you can take it in 1 to 2 turns upon reaching it, consistently.

No it is very much alive. I've been very busy with work that's why I did not update the AAR.

Hopefully by the end of the week manuscripts will be submitted, students will have analysed all their results (correctly this time [8|]), grant proposals will be submitted, student's PhD thesis will be sent to the printers and I will find time to write the next couple of turns.

Stay tuned more to come [;)]

Francophile -> RE: der Rußlandfeldzug (5/27/2021 11:52:07 PM)

Sounds good! Glad to hear.

Turn 18: 19-26 October 1941

You can’t hang all 190 million of us

[image]https://i.ibb.co/7bq2B00/Untitled.jpg[/image]

Every Soviet citizen regardless of age is up in arms against us

Heeresgruppe Nord

In the Northern sector torrential rain and the resulting mud has seriously hampered our operations. Small advances were made but at the moment the weather conditions are more of a problem for our troops than the enemy resistance. Intelligence reports are in agreement with our experiences on the ground that the Soviet Northwestern Front is essentially a spent force. The Soviets are nowhere to be found in the deep forests of the North and they are melting away leaving scores of dead and materiel immediately after initial contact with our troops. Unfortunately the weather conditions do not allow us to give chase but OKW is convinced that the situation will be calm on this side of front from now on.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/Gnf31RG/T18-AGN.jpg[/image]

4.Panzerarmee continues to rest and refit and more units are reverting to defensive stand and trying to recover from their losses. Overall OKW is planning to revert the entire Heeresgruppe Nord to defensive stand in the next couple of weeks as no further advance is possible in these adverse weather conditions.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/n0xWVCX/Russian-KV-1-tanks-in-field.jpg[/image]

Abandoned and destroyed Soviet tanks in the forest outside Bezhtsk

Heeresgruppe Mitte

In the Moscow Sector the fate of the city is now sealed. Our forces have managed to isolate the city, subject it to sustained bombardment and OKW is convinced that the city will be forced to capitulate within the next few weeks. Despite their desperate situation though it must be said that the Soviets are still refusing to surrender and are putting up fanatical resistance.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/8jL9YQ5/T18-AGC.jpg[/image]

LVII Pz.Kps and XXXIX Pz.Kps supported by XXVIII AK, XXIII AK and VIII AK managed to reach the shores of the Rybinsk Reservoir and severe the link between the Soviet Reserve and Western Fronts. 2.Pz.Div. reached the Upper Volga but lack of support prevented them from establishing a bridgehead. During the extensive encirclements LVII Pz.Kps managed to isolate the 204th and 205th Rifle Divisions in Bezhtsk but at the moment the enemy is still holding to the city.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/0YvSp6y/metro-station3-Mayakovskaya.jpg[/image]

Citizens of Moscow are trying to find shelter in the Mayakovskaya Underground Station

On the eastern sector of the front the adverse weather hampered our advance and 2.Panzerarmee used this time to rest and refit as much as possible. OKW is earmarking units for the final assault on Moscow and any further advance at the moment is stopped due to the weather. The Soviets continue to put up stiff resistance in the area but their defensive Fronts are operating in isolation from each other making their entire situation far more difficult for them. Although we expect a few more weeks of hard fighting OKW is convinced that the enemy lacks the will and resources to substantially alter their predicament.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/VHL8nkM/Ghetto.jpg[/image]

Areal photograph of the Khimki suburb in Moscow after the expulsion of the enemy troops

Heeresgruppe Süd

In the South heavy rains have limited our advances but it is safe to say that the enemy is trying to shore-up their defences in Moscow and Rostov. Overall our troops are facing minimal resistance and despite the fanatical determination of the Red Army to stop our advance the lack of resources and defensive coherency is obvious. Along the frontline the enemy is being killed or captured at increasing numbers with large areas of the font remaining totally empty of enemy troops.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/hMLhf8v/T18-AGS1.jpg[/image]

In the Rostov area XXXXVIII Pz.Kps supported by XXXIV AK created a penetration on the Soviet defensive line and crossed the Don. The adverse weather conditions prohibited us from exploiting the breach but our crossing of the river is putting extra pressure on the Soviet defenders in Rostov.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/SmhG7b0/T18-AGS2.jpg[/image]

Further South a series of coordinated attacks against the enemy at Odessa managed to crack the defences and forced the 49th Army to surrender after having received more than 20,000 casualties. The capture of Odessa is of vital importance as it frees the Romanian and Italian Allies to pursue the capture of Sevastopol in Crimea.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/VYdtb06/197995-8-trinixy-ru.jpg[/image]

Soviet troops continue to defend Odessa prior to the surrender of 49th Army

Operational Summary

This week we suffered 18,483 casualties (6,130 dead, 89 captured and 12,264 disabled) and lost 127 guns, 35 AFVs and 73 airplanes. The Soviets have suffered 108,281 casualties (23,272 killed, 68,860 captured and 16,149 disabled) and lost 1,979 guns, 95 AFVs and 100 planes.

Turn 19: 27 October - 2 November 1941

We are at the end of our resources in both personnel and material. We are about to be confronted with the dangers of deep winter

[image]https://i.ibb.co/K0Fd6KT/Untitled.jpg[/image]

General der Artillerie Eduard Wagner (Generalquartiermeister im Oberkommando des Heeres) is concerned about the supply situation

Strategische Lage im Osten

Due to the constant rain and the resulting mud our armies have stopped their advance and are trying to keep a relatively intact frontline while at the same time the majority of our units are earmarked for refit with supplies arriving from Germany. The enemy appears to have lost their fighting spirit and are retreating almost immediately after establishing contact with our troops. Scores of discarded equipment can be found along the entire front and for now the enemy is unwilling or unable to provide any coordinated effort against our forces.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/gPYTwfK/0hbpyf1426541.jpg[/image]

Entrenched Soviet troops outside Rostov

The slowdown of the advance over the last few weeks will probably give the enemy time to regroup and refit, something that is unfortunate, especially if we consider all the effort we have put to reach to this point. Nevertheless OKW is convinced that the Red Army is near collapse and this small respite due to the mud will only prolong their inevitable destruction. For now the enemy is digging deep into well prepared defensive positions across the entire frontline but as soon as the weather clears and the ground gets solid we should be able to destroy their formations were they stand.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/Nyz96qR/Bundesarchiv-Bild-101-I-394-1459-11-Russland-Soldaten-mit-MG-in-Stellung-im-Winter.jpg[/image]

MG Position of Infanterie-Regiment 408 of 121.Inf.Div. in the forest surrounding Oyat. Snow is already falling heavily in the North

So far the campaign has been truly brutal and the civilians in the rear areas have suffered heavily. Almost all villages and cities are destroyed, something that poses significant logistical difficulties for our troops. Nevertheless trains loaded with supplies arrive constantly from Germany but we are getting to a point were a few weeks of rest will actually help our fighting abilities. Obviously this respite will also help the Soviets but OKW is willing to allow for this break in the offensive action until the weather improves.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/GTzrQYk/RIAN-archive-982-Ruins-of-a-house.jpg[/image]

Soviet villagers ponder their desperate situation with the onset of winter

In the Moscow sector our troops are continuing the siege but so far the enemy appears to be unwilling to stop fighting. Small penetrations have been made but the enemy resistance is stiff and OKW is unwilling to get involved in street fighting as to avoid heavy and unnecessary casualties.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/r5JDVJL/russian-soldiers.jpg[/image]

Soldiers of the 97th Rifle Division are holding their defensive positions in the Kuntsevo suburb of Moscow

For now OKW is allocating LIII AK, XX AK, XXVII AK and V AK to tighten the siege and soften the enemy resistance by constant artillery fire. The adverse weather is putting logistical difficulties in the allocation and repositioning of our forces but OKW is convinced that by mid-November all resistance in Moscow will have ended.

In the South we have initiated a siege in Rostov and managed to cross the Don in Bataysk, putting severe strain in the defences of the city. The enemy is well entrenched and a direct assault will be too costly so OKW have opted for a prolonged siege. At the moment we are bringing heavy artillery but the advance is slow due to the mud. As soon as the weather clears we expect to encircle the city and isolate its garrison. Until then our troops are resting and preparing for the next stage of the advance.

Not even close really.

Where did you find all the pictures?

Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it

The pictures are from various sites that deal with the Second World War on the Internet. I try to use them appropriately (i.e. the correct unit, place and time) but in some cases I take liberties and use a generic one for immersion purposes. For example the picture of the 10.5 cm FH18 howitzer of 1.Batl. of Artillery Regiment 352 in the previous post is indeed showing the described gun and the men of the correct unit but the actual picture is taken in France in 1944 if I remember correctly.

Legendary AAR. After you win (presumably by sudden death for Soviets) will you start another with AI at 110+ morale? Sorry if this has been asked/answered before.

First of all thank you once again for your kind words. I know I said it before but I truly appreciate all the feedback [:)]

Regarding the future let's win this war first [;)][:)]

On a serious note I am thinking of playing the Soviet Campaign from Stalingrad to Berlin. I have never played the Soviets so it will be something new. I am open to suggestions though [;)]

Turn 20: 3-8 November 1941

No one foot of our land will be given to the enemy

[image]https://i.ibb.co/bHjR8MK/Poster054.jpg[/image]

Motherland is calling you!

Strategische Lage im Osten

The current weather conditions in the USSR are causing significant problems to the Wehrmacht. For the last three weeks the constant rain has hampered all our efforts to advance and we have limited ourselves in containing the positions we are currently holding with minimal advances of tactical nature where possible. At the moment the Red Army is all but destroyed and the only thing that saved them from complete annihilation is the adverse weather. This situation will obviously not last too long and as soon as the ground gets a bit more solid we should be able to strike the final blow to the enemy. The alarming result of this lull in the action is that it allows the Soviets to resupply and substitute their shattered units across the entire frontline with fresh ones coming from the rear areas.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/f4B7Jgb/T20-Situation.jpg[/image]

With Moscow all but captured and Rostov-on-Don isolated the war in the East is practically won. Nevertheless OKW is convinced that the Soviets will refuse to stop fighting unless they are totally destroyed. With the current situation of the Wehrmacht it is not possible to complete this task in 1941, therefore a renewed summer offensive will probably be required. At the moment OKW is working hard in establishing a continuous and well-defended frontline for the coming winter and for this reason the majority of our units is set to rest and refit status.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/Wty4WNH/RIAN-archive-1274-Tanks-going-to-the-front.jpg[/image]

New Soviet T-34 Battle Tanks are transported to the front from the Ural Factories

Heeresgruppe Nord

In the Northern Sector there has been very little activity due to the adverse weather. The amount of mud has made even the slightest of movements impossible, so most of our units remained in their entrenched positions. Intelligence reports that the Leningrad Front is almost deprived of men and equipment but unfortunately we cannot take advantage of this. Nevertheless snowfall in a number of places has been reported so we expect to be in a position to resume limited offensive action very soon.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/sRs9190/T20-AGN.jpg[/image]

X AK, II AK and XXIII AK have made some limited advances. XXIII AK especially has managed to push the enemy behind the Upper Volga and is within reach of securing the Rybinsk Reservoir. The Soviet Kalinin Front's 12th and 30th Armies have retreated behind the River in an attempt to protect the advances to Kalinin and Yaroslav. For the time being we have not made any attempt of forcing the issue with the enemy due to the weather but we can expect stiff resistance in this sector as soon as the weather improves.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/qBdS27z/battle-kursk-0013.jpg[/image]

Vehicles of Füsilier-Bataillon 206 of 206.Inf.Div. are having hard time advancing towards Volga

Heeresgruppe Mitte

In this sector of the front the main points of action are in Ivanovo and Moscow. Along the western sector VIII AK and V AK have managed to achieve moderate advances pushing the enemy 30th and 4th Army further eastwards. XIII AK supported by XXXXII AK have managed to advance along the Klyazma eastern bank and after some heavy fighting with the Soviet 16th and 20th Armies 1.Kav.Div. captured Vladimir in the evening of 6 November.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/nDvqKLy/T20-AGC.jpg[/image]

This advance and the capture of Vladimir is expected to destabilise the entire Soviet Western Front as it has all-but severe the link with the Bryansk Front and has put the 30th, 4th and 20th Armies in danger of being encircled by motorised forces. Unfortunately the current weather conditions do not allow for such an attempt but the enemy is in a truly precarious situation.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/DrCCv9P/Untitled.jpg[/image]

Soviet troops captured in Vladimir are waiting to be evacuated to POW Camps

In the Moscow sector after a long preparatory artillery bombardment VI AK and LIII AK have assaulted the enemy in the densely populated Dimitrovsky District across the Moskva River. The assault managed to break the outer Soviet defences but the enemy has retreated into the city and continued to fight. Brutal street fighting took place but our training and use of heavy weapons eventually won the day but not before we suffered 1,494 casualties. At 23:30 on 8 November Major General Aleksandr Korobkov was captured in his command post and all resistance is virtually eliminated. During the 5 days of extreme street fighting the Soviets have lost more than 28,000 men, most of them captured usually when they run out of ammunition. The severe fighting has precluded us from continuing the advance further into the city but this is just temporary. The entire city is engulfed in flames and severe street fighting is taking place everywhere with the enemy taking heavy casualties. Just in the Dimitrovsky District intelligence indicates that we have managed to destroy or capture at least 5 Soviet Rifle Divisions.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/26CN3LD/Untitled1.jpg[/image]

The Dimitrovsky District in Moscow under heavy attach from the Wehrmacht

Enemy units are trying to escape the encirclement and severe fighting is also taking place in the periphery of the city, with the enemy taking severe casualties and being forced to either surrender or return to their starting positions. A number of enemy tanks were abandoned in Putilkovo as soon as they came into contact with PAKs of 6.Inf.Div. as they were trying to escape the city. Further investigation and interviews with the prisoners indicated that the vehicles have no ammunition and fuel enough to carry them for 15km. This is clear indication that the enemy is low on supplies and no matter their resolve they will be forced to capitulate soon.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/yNfp9LG/kv-1-tanks.jpg[/image]

Destroyed and abandoned enemy KV-1 Main Battle Tank in Putilkovo near Moscow

The majority of the enemy troops captured or killed have no weapons or ammunition left and they are all shell-shocked and starving. The situation is even worse for the civilians caught in the middle of the battle with scores of them being killed or injured.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/tsLsMtJ/Untitled2.jpg[/image]

Underaged Soviet soldier is crawling towards the German lines to surrender in Putilkovo

Every building in the Northern Districts of Moscow (Putilkovo, Tushino, Dimitrovsky and Levoberezhny) has been defended by the Soviets and had to be cleared room by room by our troops. At the moment most of the houses in these areas are either completely destroyed or on fire and the huge civilian population present is making our operations more difficult and more dangerous.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/W3JYVGJ/building-on-fire.jpg[/image]

Buildings across the Yana Raynisa Boulevard in Tushino District on fire with civilians running for cover in the midst of heavy fighting

Heeresgruppe Süd

In the South the enemy is in full retreat and only the mud is stopping us from the complete elimination of the Soviet units. In the Ryazan Area VIII AK and XXXXIII AK have probed the enemy 11th, 3rd and 21st Armies but the mud has stopped us from making any advances.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/hWQ6wPz/T20-AGS1.jpg[/image]

The enemy has managed to amass four armies (10th, 33rd, 40th and 13th) in a bulge around the city of Tambov. XXXV AK, XIII AK and XXXIV AK have attempted to check the enemy formations but lack of supplies and the total lack of roads have not allowed us to make any significant advances. III Pz.Kps attempted a penetration but the excessive amounts of mud posed an insurmountable challenge and the advance came to a halt fairly quickly.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/XXbGJQL/T20-AGS2.jpg[/image]

In the area defended by the Soviet Southwestern Front the lack of roads meant that only small tactical relocations were able and our forces remained at a safe distance from the enemy. Intelligence reports indicate that the enemy is reinforcing its positions in the area but without the ground being solid no attempt to disrupt their preparations can be made.

[image]https://i.ibb.co/mN03ZZM/T20-AGS3.jpg[/image]

In Rostov XXXIV AK has managed to isolate the city with 94.Inf.Div. capturing Bataysk. The enemy has tried to amass 10 Rifle Divisions in the region but for now the heavy rain and the ground conditions have stopped them from making any attempt to relieve the city of Rostov.

Operational Summary

During last week we have suffered 11,905 casualties (4,602 killed, 46 captured and 7,256 disabled) and lost 134 Guns, 5 AFVs and 1 plane. The Soviets have suffered 50,824 casualties (12,970 dead, 34,979 captured and 2,857 disabled) and lost 938 Guns, 93 AFVs and 181 planes.
