scout1 -> WitE2 as a playable option (3/28/2021 9:02:22 PM)

Love / Hate with detailed games along with theatre issues

Have always been drawn to detailed games going back into the 70's ..... Was drawn to get them but tended to not play them, though in the board game era lacked someone(s) to play against with large maps, hundreds/thousands of counters, rulebooks w/hundred of pages, etc ......

Fast forward to more recent years ....
- bought WITE .... merely broached the surface, played a couple of campaigns against the AI and took it off my hard drive
- bought WitW .... played a couple of pbem games, struggled with the air war implementation (or my lack of embrasing it), stopped playing it
- played several campaigns of WitP AE .... love it, but never really good at it, played it like I played chess ... not will to take alot of time per move, so payed the consequences ... did finished at least 2 grand campaigns as the empire ... twas ugly ...

Intriqued by WitE2...........just not sure about if it becomes another WitE1 for me ... WitPAE has a multitude of options and strategies which makes it unpredictable .... so playable .... The east front seems more limited .... from a replay standpoint .....

Looking for opinions ......

Full confession, I loved WitW because it packed a lot of decisions and a lot of realism into a smaller (relative) package. I tried WitE1 a little, and it was just...a whole lot of clicking and a whole lot of special tricks that seemed to matter more than the operations and strategy. So much irrelevance made important, so much gaming the system, just so much of learning systems for systems sake. I played a handful of turns and decided I’d made an acceptable contribution to the hobby with my dollars.

In contrast, I’ve played close to 150 multiplayer turns in WITE2 and still find the game both manageable and interesting in terms of decisions. I think WITE2 is a real step forward not only in verisimilitude, but in being an engaging game that caters to more playing the war than gaming the system. There are still minor gaps, as there always will be. There are still points where knowing the system helps. And fighting hundreds of divisions has some certain unavoidable clicking. But it is leaps and bounds beyond WiTE1 in all those categories and virtually every way I can think of that makes it a better game and a better simulation.

Scout1, You've expressed my experience with both WitE and WitW and my hesitation in buying this one. Seems like we're becoming specialists in a particular game because the complexity is becoming so great with them. Personally, I've invested years in Command and not sure I would spend the time necessary to get my money's worth out of WitE2?

Struggling...

I know your feeling, since WitP-AE been my love.

But it is matter of priorities, I did beta-test this and liked it.

Regarding your history with the games I would leave it on the shelf.

For me, I like WITE 1 the most. It is complex and has a certain slick simpleness to it. It is perfect game design for me. You really can plan, manouver, have to have an eye on supplies, the weather and production is important, but in small doses.

WITW... I am lukewarm about it. Air War is fun, but ground war... they took the scale of WITE and it just doesn't fit the theater(s). It is too small and feels unimportant that way. You just don't have enough (ground) toys and movement is not really important anymore. Also... if you like to play the Germans it is just boring, whereas as the Allies you almost have to do too much. And even though I liked how detailed the air war is... I never got how to use it effectively. There is a point where you have so many nooks and crannies you can turn, that you really don't see what does what and how what you do can be effective. Add to that a really finegrained game calculation which is also pretty opaque, the package as a whole is off to me.
I mean somehow the developers themselves had realised it is too much too handle I guess and give the player an AI option. It is a little bit like defeat in my eyes. You design a system and then let it play itself? Also... the UI really got bogged down by the new options. It just wasn't designed that way, it is bloated.

And now WITE2... It has everything WITW brought and now even more details for the Eastern Theater. Air War, Depot Management, ground war with a lot of chits. This really is not the game for you. Even though you can leave the air war and depot management to the AI, if you will do this there is little advancement over WITE 1 for you.

My advice would be.. invest more time in WITE. If you get the hang of it, then take a second look at WITW and learn the air war system. If you've come this far and liked what you saw, then invest in WITE 2.

By it's nature any East Front Game will be a lot more limited in options than something with the scope of WITP.

That said, the Editor has become much easier to use and opens up many possibilites for semi plausible what ifs.

BTW, you can have Rommel on East Front, if so inclined.
