HybridSpyda -> Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 3:02:25 PM)

Greetings Everyone!

We have just released a new open beta for Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2!
You will be able to download the patch directly from the My Page section of the Matrix Games site or via the games store page.
I'll also leave a convenient link here.

All the changes can be found below:

New Features and Rule Changes
• Adjusted scroll speed. Sped up scrolling in zoomed out views, and adjusted scrolling speed with the arrow keys.
• Undocumented rule - Axis units in heavy snow from December 1941 to March 1942 have their defensive CV modified as follows:
Dec 1941 - /2
Jan 1942 - /1.5
Feb 1942 - /1.33
This is reflected in the CV values shown on the map. In addition, once in combat, there are admin and land combat rating checks made. For each failed check, the defense value is modified an additional time. So, a unit in Jan 1942 in heavy snow can have its CV divided by 1.5 up to 3 times if it fails both checks.

Bug Fixes
• Game does not launch. It was determined that having certain speech recognition software turned on prevented the game from running. Fixed.
• Game crashes when a player assigns a support unit to a level 0 (as yet unbuilt) airbase that is not in a town/city/urban hex. It should not be possible to attempt to assign a support unit to a level 0 airbase, but you can attach a support unit to a city/town/urban hex where an airfield is being constructed. Fixed.
• Soviet AI is moving some fort units that should be immobile (Coastal Artillery Divisions and Fortified Regions). Fixed.
• CR HQ tab “frozen” column rollover text is incorrect. Fixed.

Happy Gaming!

Just why.

So a unit that fails all checks in December is at 10% of it's nominal CV. But only defensively......

If the units in general are in too good a shape in December 41 then make the mandatory VP target more agressive so players need to burn out their units or else make the logistic model more punitive so that the far out frontline units can't receive their replacements. Depending on the code you could probably even lower the % chance of units receiving replacements if near enemy units. You already have something like for units on Refit.

Both would be better and more historical representations of what happened than artificial CV cuts.

The attack CV being left untouched I guess allows the January 42 counteroffensives with the fresh units from France, but the design ignores why the counter offensives were possible, i.e. fresh units.

Arguably WITE needed the Blizzard rules as crutches because the tools were not there otherwise to simulate what it represented, but this is certainly not the case anymore. This is bound to lead to all kinds of ridiculous gamey behaviour.

Bamilus -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 4:23:32 PM)

Assuming this works on 1.00 current save files (no new game required)?

Erik Rutins -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 4:24:20 PM)

Just to be clear, that isn't a new change, it was just previously undocumented and missed in the manual.

MechFO -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 4:38:42 PM)

Are mountain and Finns exempted as they were in WITE?

Please expose these variables in the Editor.

Joel Billings -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 4:51:25 PM)

Yes, you can continue on with your existing games.

The CV rule was something that Gary had in the game from day 1 as he wanted to simulate the difficulties that came with lack of preparation for the harsh first winter as well as the psychological impact of the Soviet ability to launch large counterattacks. The harsh supply rules account for the issues that the Germans had with the rail system, and the added attrition accounts somewhat for the lack of physical preparations, but Gary felt there should be more.

None of us actually knew about these rules while the game was in testing, although I think we were seeing the impact of the non-random CV divisor incorporated in the counters. As an aside, I often think how the only real way to simulate a lot of warfare is by not telling the players about some of the rules in advance. But this is a game and understandably players want to know the rules. We only came across this code a few weeks ago when we were checking on something else, and we realized we had missed documenting it. We wanted to make sure it got documented and it will be in the living manual.

There is no exceptions to the CV divisor rule.

I can't say whether the testers would have played differently had they known the rules existed. My recollection of just about every AAR was that the Soviets launched major counterattacks in the winter, sometimes keeping it up despite harsh German counterattacks. I can't speak to why Gary decided to only put this penalty on the defender CV, but I can say that we liked the way the game played with the Germans having an ability to counterattack.

In the end, like so much of the game, we will await feedback from a much wider audience on how the game plays out. We are standing by to make adjustments if things aren't playing out the way we think they should in actual games. The more AARs and the more feedback on how the games play out, the better.

Well that explains some things we saw in late 41!

I quess this is not the only "undocumented" rules. Is there a link with all "undocumented" rules in a glance wich will be updated?

I think the point is they were unaware of it since it's something Gary did. So, they can't really document something that is unknown. They've already said they are adding it to updated living rules.

Joel Billings -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/30/2021 11:19:33 PM)

We plan on providing a living manual with rule changes as we release updates. It will probably run a few versions behind, but you can always check the readme for the latest in changes.

This is the only one we're currently aware of.

May I suggest to make the heavy snow rule optional, similar to the case of WitE1. Players can then decide whether they want to give the sov winter advantage or not, and if so whether through the rule or other means (such as a higher morale or admin setting for sov). When deciding on the option to pursue, I think the players will fully understand that the game is initially tested and balaned with this rule implemented. I believe that many players would like to test what if the German side was more prepared for the Winter.

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (3/31/2021 1:10:55 PM)

I would like to think that the number of wins to make guard status went up too. Easy wins in winter against a unit that failed 3 checks seems like a trophy for everyone play.

you can do that in the editor, just reset the 1941 winter from harsh to normal, you'll keep some of the logistics problems as they actually run June 41 - March 42 but it remove the others.

[image]local://upfiles/43256/8F63B2E50E0D4AE4A982F05A9466E76E.jpg[/image]

you'll basically create a custom scenario that you will need to share with an opponent if you want to do this MP/PBEM

Thank you Loki100. This is a wonderful Editor feature!

Kronolog -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (4/1/2021 3:00:46 PM)

I've discovered three small bugs:

1. The dates on the Weather Estimation-screen are wrong. The report for the current turn uses the date of the previous turn, and the estimation for the next turn uses the date of the current turn. The report and estimation themselves however appear to be correct, that is, for the current and the next turn.

2. As of turn 22 in my ΄41 campaign as the Germans, five T70 M1942, seven ISU-122 and three T34 M1942 are listed as having been captured, even though the Soviets should not have begun producing them yet.

3. The two R.A.D battalions that begin in the Norway Theater box have duplicated "R.A.D" in their names (e.g "K52 R.A.D R.A.D Labor Detatchment")

Please post this in the tech support sub-forum when you get a chance. For #2 especially, we would need to see a save file as well.

Done.

Am I missing something or were some filters removed from commander's report? In the Units Tab there were depleted/unready filters in launch version that seem to be gone in the beta

The should still be there if there are any units that qualify. You are talking about the Status column filters, right?

Harain1 -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (4/2/2021 7:27:15 PM)

Yes, they were on the top left of the Unit Tab in the release version, and they're not there in Beta, unless I'm blind

Joel Billings -> RE: Open Beta Update v01.00.02 Available Now! (4/2/2021 8:53:30 PM)

I'm still seeing them in the Beta. Are you sure you have units that are unready or depleted? I'm still seeing the filters on the Soviet turn 1 when there are plenty of units that qualify.

If you're still not seeing them, please start a tech support thread and attach a save. Thanks.
