Given that VTOL jet aircraft and thopters seemingly do the same thing - shoot stuff from anywhere, has anyone with enough experience in aircraft design got a good understanding of how the two compare - is one better than another or they are better for different things or it depends on linear tech/planet?

Hi!

There isn't exact numberts in the manual, but basically thopter is an upgraded helicopter.
They're missing the option off wings in the design menu and possibly needed thicker atmosphere.

Thopters
Thopters are superior to Helicopters as they have the same advantage in being able to take off and land anywhere, but
being equipped with Jet Engines they can have much higher speeds and thus higher Dogfight Scores.

Vtol looks like an expensive alternative to thopters.
VTOL Turbojet Same as Turbojet but more expensive to produce and
taking more Weight on the aircraft. (max upto 2 engines)

In my experience VTOL aircraft isn't worth it, their engines are waaay heavier than Thopters, reducing their max range/speed/dogfight score.

Yes, I've made a few experiments (e.g. trying to design a light thopter vs light VTOL aircraft with the same cargo space), and thopters end up way ahead in range. However Thopters and VTOL turbojets are same level technologies, and there's a lot of different aircraft configurations added on top of planet gravity/atmosphere - so I'm wondering if I'm missing some use cases for VTOL jets or they are simply an underpowered option right now.

The manual does say that thopters get worse if air density is lower relative to gravity, so maybe VTOL turbojets have an edge there? Thopters are actually more basic tech compared to VTOL turbojets in-game since the VTOL turbojets have the Turbojet Engine from tier 4 in the Energetics box as a prerequisite.
