Save attached (renamed .sav => .txt, zip files aren't allowed for some reason any more?)

In Soviet Russia, crows don't fly 50 miles! ;)

I renamed your file to .zip but it did not let me unzip it. You should be able to upload a zip file. You can try emailing it to 2by3@2by3games.com. I will move this to the tech support area where maybe the uploading is easier.

BTW, you may have discovered an undocumented rule. Wouldn't be the first. [:)]

Nix77 -> RE: SU Commitment (4/23/2021 7:03:44 PM)

It's not a zip, it's .sav :)

Duh! Sorry, my mistake. Spoke with Gary and he found the 30 MP check so we think that you must be within 30 MPs to commit support troops. Good catch. We'll add it to the documentation.

MechFO -> RE: SU Commitment (4/23/2021 10:39:59 PM)

Is this 30MP counted for motorized or non motorized movement? Does it depend on SU motorisation type?

Is it only counted by direct line or does take the cheapest from HQ to unit meaning the path can deviate?

Joel Billings -> RE: SU Commitment (4/23/2021 10:52:06 PM)

Gary found the 30 in the code, so my guess is it is tracing using the HQ's motorization type and using motorized MPs for all units (that's how the player determined it was 30, by looking at what it would cost the HQ to move to the attacker's hex). Since I didn't think to question Gary about the type of MPs, I can't answer that for sure.

In the test battles in my thread the cheapest route I can trace costs 33MP when using my HQ unit (200.103->201.99) during normal ground conditions and yet I still got SU commitment in some rare cases.

Path traced is 200.103->199.100->200.99->201.98->201.99. No enemy units in 201.97 or 202.98.

The later ground combats where I got no SU's at all were in light mud/snow so the extra MP cost would explain that but still trying to understand how to get a 30MP route in the first case.

Joel Billings -> RE: SU Commitment (4/24/2021 2:04:50 AM)

The only way to get more info about this, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort, is to provide a save where Gary can run the game and he can try to watch it in the debugger to see what's going on. Even then, it may not be very easy for him to figure out exactly what's happening. It depends on how complicated the function is. I'd put this low on the priority list. There does appear to be some limit being put on how far the units will go in MPs, but exactly how it does the trace (which direction, what motorization type) is probably not worth trying to dig out.

MechFO -> RE: SU Commitment (4/24/2021 11:47:36 AM)

I checked again and manually counted the MP's. It's exactly 30 using motorized movement if enemy ZOC costs are ignored, so that will be the explanation.

dudefan -> RE: SU Commitment (4/24/2021 1:27:23 PM)

Which means.. I general keeping hq 4 hexes apart (instead of 5) just to be safe?

MechFO -> RE: SU Commitment (4/24/2021 2:11:01 PM)

It depends on the enviroment. Heavy Wood and Swamp hexes cost at least 8 MP for poor roads, so if you are up north or in swampy areas, even 4 hexes might not be enough in good weather if you have rivers inbetween.
