We think that in our PBEM game when air units conduct an attack against naval groups with CVs that the air lost by the CVs is not shown on the combat log but does show when you click on Battles.
I did a hot seat test using the 1941 scenario. I moved the Victorious within range of a German bomber in North Africa. I then did a naval attack with it on the Victorious naval group. First of all it is my understanding that no matter what mode the aircraft on a CV are set to (i.e. attack ground, naval etc.), one third of the air on the CV will automatically be on CAP. In this specific attack the following was displayed.
Battles: Fliegerkorps Losses: Air 2
7 Ships with 1CV, 3BB, 1CA
Losses: Air: 4 Damage: 0 Sunk: 0
Combat Log: Axis Attacking Naval Air Strike
II Fliegerkorps 2
Defending Ships - It lists all 7 ships by name
Defender Losses - No losses
I checked the Victorious and it was down to 8 air from 10 so if the Battles tab is accurate indicating a loss of 4 air for the UK then they must have lost 2 from land based air that came up to defend the CV.
I find it odd that in the combat log the air losses for the UK are not shown. Or is this the case for solo and hotseat only with losses showing in PBEM?
