Duck Doc -> Solomon Islands Campaign computer games (5/5/2021 6:31:13 PM)

Anyone know of any computer games dedicated to this campaign (operational level) only (not part of a larger game like WarPlan: Pacific or WitP)? If not computer then good board games?

Thanks,

Blond_Knight -> RE: Solomon Islands Campaign computer games (5/5/2021 6:49:10 PM)

Uncommon Valor. But its been discontinued because of a direct draw issue.

deeter -> RE: Solomon Islands Campaign computer games (5/5/2021 7:23:48 PM)

War on the Sea (early access) covers operational to tactical. Not sure about ground combat though.

Has anyone tried this? DDrawCompat
quote:

DDrawCompat is a DLL wrapper aimed at fixing compatibility and performance issues with games based on DirectDraw and Direct3D 1-7. Partially supports GDI as well. There is no API conversion involved, most of the rendering is still done by the native DirectDraw/Direct3D 1-7 and GDI libraries.

This is a link to WWII battles of south pacific.
It is on abandonware site. It is a DOS game but you can play in
your browser. It was made by company QQP of perfect general fame.
I play this game for days and days back in the day.

It has hourly turns. It is kind of like the Flattop board game.

!!!SORRY!!! looks like it will not allow me to post a link.
Do a google search for...
WWII battles of south pacific
It should show you a link to the game.

Hope this helps. It has a Solomon campaign.
Giacomo.

I checked out War on the Sea but... meh. Looking for more of a pure strategy game of the Campaign. Funny, I imagined it would have been worked to death because it was such a tight, back-and-forth campaign just made for gaming.

Thanks all!

I totally agree with you, one of the tightest mini-campaigns in WW2.

I would still go for the Guadalcanal Campaign in WitP:AE. True, you buy the whole game only to play a part of it, but AE is one of those rare games that give you much more than their price.

Maybe wait for a sale.

Along with War In The Mediterranean, this is a campaign that just begs to be properly wargamed. I genuinely don't understand why campaigns like these - which were on a knife-edge and could have gone either way - have not been the subject of proper games. Such an interesting period of time and yet so sorely neglected.

Because it requires 3 working frameworks - Land, Sea, & Air. And unlike WitP:AE, there aren't (many) Americans.

There weren't many Americans involved in the Solomons Campaign?? Er...okay... but I respectfully suggest you are wrong...[X(]

The Med didn't have Yanks during the critical years, reducing gamer's interest.
Med games have to deal with land blitzkriegs that were generally absent from the Pacific War. The land part of AE seems to be the weakest link of land, sea, air.

But this thread is about the Solomon Islands Campaign. I mentioned WITM only to serve as another example of great campaigns that have been under-gamed. Sadly we know the likely reasons for the Med, but the reasons for the Solomons being so under-represented is more difficult to fathom - unless its simply the difficulty in properly bringing together all three services in one game.

Balancing a Solomons Campaign game is problematic. The Japanese are still going to lose the war regardless. In AE, Japan has a small chance to not lose the war.
In the Med, the Axis had a big upside if they won. That makes it exciting, as has been explored in various threads.

RangerJoe -> RE: Solomon Islands Campaign computer games (5/9/2021 10:59:14 AM)

I think that Americans would play a Med game even if the American units are only included towards the end of the game. After all, they do play games that are set before 1770.

Take a look at Carrier Battles on Steam. Might be what you are looking for. Has 'Very Positive' reviews.

"CARRIER BATTLES is a classic hex-and-counter digital wargame covering the naval-air battles of the Pacific War, from 1942 to 1943. Find your opponent and strike at him before he sinks your precious carriers, while preventing them from invading or supporting your own amphibious operations."

" 11 historical scenarios: Coral Sea May 42, Midway June 42, Eastern Solomon Aug 42, Santa Cruz Oct 42, Guadalcanal Dec 42, Bismarck Sea March 43,
Rabaul 1943, Guadalcanal Feb 1943, Watchtower Aug.42, US Raids Mar 42, Wake Dec 41"

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Having to code and integrate land, sea, air and amphibious elements together might be more work than some developers want. I noticed Gary Gribsby's War in the West really simplified the naval element in particular.

Thanks for the tip. I checked it out on Steam and looked at a Youtube playthru and it does indeed look like it may scratch my itch. It is an Avalon Hill product and seems very polished and capable. Reviews are indeed positive.

Avalon Digital NOT Avalon Hill. AD is a French company.

I stand corrected. Curiously enough I have Carrier Battles 4 Guadalcanal on my iPad. It is by Cyril Jarnot and it looks very similar. I understand the Steam PC game is indeed a mobile port. Is it the same?. I never played it and it has been just sitting on my device. Will play some and report back. Thanks,
