This has probably been asked before:
Is it advisable as Allied player to wait for the Germans at the Dnjepr-Daugava-line instead of mounting a forward defense when Barbarossa launches?

Yes, highly advisable to set first line of major Russians defenses on the Daugava-Dnjepr line. Otherwise, the axis will easily destroy or encircle all of your units on the border. Most people really set first line of defenses on Pskov, Smolensk and then Dnjepr line. You can usually do some type of delaying action along the Daugava river, but it is too close to the German border and Luftwaffe to hold.
