James80 -> [WAD] Rest option doesn't prevent transport flights (5/15/2021 2:55:49 PM)

Hi,

don't know if this is a bug:

If I set my transport AOGs in rest mode they fly nonetheless if I click on AI assist in the movement phase. If this is WAD, how can I prevent this AI behaviour without sending them to the reserves? I want to use them manually at last.

AFAIK this is WAD. By setting them to not follow an HQ, they will only fly resupply missions to airbases. I don't know of any way to keep them from flying with the AI assist, although I will ask Gary about this.

Thanks, Joel. An option to keep them on the ground would be nice to prevent unnecessary downs.

What is the rest option for?

If not using the AI assist it would do what you want, but the AI assist takes the units off rest.

Hey Joel,

may I kindly ask if you have had the time to talk with Gary about this. I've played again and think it would be reasonable to have an option to have a no flight setting for transport planes when using ai help.

Best regards

James

A way to park a squadron you don't want to participate in an Air Directive you otherwise intend to keep.

So you could have 5 squadrons in an Air Superiority directive but one gets really low morale. The rest button will park them, without having to delete them from the Air Directive.

Was very useful in the WitW Allied bombing campaign, but I could see how it would be relied on less in the eastern front.

Gary has said it's possible to make it so that resting transports are skipped by the AI, but he'd have to go through and make sure that code that changes the mission setting doesn't take units off rest. He doesn't think the AI is making use of rest (it just sends units back to the reserve when worn down), but it might be automatically changing mission settings to D/N, D or N. So the question is should we try to adjust the AI assist to ignore units that are on rest and leave it to the player to take them off rest. If we do this, should we do it for all air units, or just transports?

Hey Joel,

thanks for coming back to this. From an UI perspective I find it difficult to select a "Rest" option which will be automatically overridden by the ai. I always thought I am doing something wrong.
From gameplay perspective I have just noticed it for transport planes. I am really a newbie at this game and try to learn how everything works so I don't dare to say if it is sensible for other air units, too. I hope some of the experienced players can give feedback to this.

there are a couple of partial solutions;

a) target a HQ that is behind the front lines, the resulting freight moves are still useful in that it will shift it closer to the front but its likely that the range (thus op losses) is more limited and little to no risk of enemy fighters (at an extreme, I think you could hook them to OKH but not sure about that)

b) leave them with no HQ target and they will focus on resupplying airbases. Again this is useful as it pulls freight closer to the front and means your airforce is not competing with the ground forces so much. Equally you more likely gain from shorter distances and outside enemy figther ranges.
