Am I the only one to think that WITE1 map (chemkid version) was better than the WITE2 map ?
- wite1 map was globally much clearer.
- cities names better displayed on wite1 map (large cities in uppercase)
- large cities better displayed on wite1
- easier to distinguish type of land on wite1 map
- can't see mud on new wite2
- wite2 map is too dark

Actually I find the new map rather confused and rough...

It's a pity because of course, otherwise, wite2 is much much better.

Bamilus -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 8:28:58 AM)

I think wite2 map is better but reason they changed is because new map they can easily make changes to whereas old map was hexes overlaid on an image, so much harder to change terrain on that, for example.

Wait, are you saying that my old buddy chemkid did the map for WitE1? That explains a few things to me....GP

RedLancer -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 2:37:00 PM)

Chemkid didn't do the original WitE map. He may have done a mod. Having been asked and looked at doing the WitE2 map he, like Jison, declined to be involved.

I know from experience that he did great work....GP

jlbhung -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 3:13:21 PM)

The WitE2 map is in fact very beautiful.

However, due to poor eyesight I have difficulty distinguishing some features. I think part of it is because sometimes there are two different-coloured hex for the same terrain (e.g. clear, woods). Moreover, the "irregular" hex-side further complicates the case (i.e. the "coast" feature for in-land hexes, or the spill-over of some terrain to surrounding hexes - I have difficulty expressing this, I hope that people understand this). The contrast of major river to minor river is also not significant for me.

Nevertheless, thanks to the building block nature of the map and the powerful Editor, recently I tried and successfully made personalised amendments to the map to suit my own needs.

overkill01 -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 3:53:16 PM)

It is more practical to paint on a pallete than to create art for each individual hex and then puzzle it all together.
You don't see the impact of the hexart you're creating until you put it on the map, and that takes hours to create.
For example, you might think its a little to dark, then you spend hours to make it all lighter to find out you made it too bright, then you start all over again.

This system definitely made for a better game. Maybe not so much for the mapart, although this is subjective.

You mentioned you don't see mud, or do you mean you barely see it?
Mud should show up on the map, did you toggle weather gfx off for ground? (check "toggle weather grafic types" in the mapinfo tab. )

Very true.

Phoenix100 -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 8:16:46 PM)

Chemkid was asked and declined? I'm v curious now, since ALL his posts mysteriously vanished almost overnight and rumours were then rife that he'd gone into some 'government program'. And this was perhaps five years ago. When was he asked to do the Wite2 map? Was he asked through some government portal? Or have I missed some news? His map work was seriously outstanding. The WitPAE maps, for example.

repeat... dleted

Q-Ball -> RE: The new map (5/23/2021 9:01:38 PM)

Keep in mind that they changed the Map SYSTEM.

WITE-2 is a flexible, tile-based map that allows for easy changes to the map.

WITE-1 was basically a static-art map that could not be changed.

It's easier to draw a great static-art map, but for long-term playability and flexibility, the tile-based system is the way to go

Someone correct me if I have not described the difference correctly

Nope, you are correct.

king171717 -> RE: The new map (5/24/2021 2:51:16 AM)

At first I didnt like the WITE 2 map (compared to WITE 1), but now i really like it more. I run the pretty tree mod with it. I sure in time it will look better and better with mods too.

Does it mean thst WITE2 map is moddable, even more than WITE1 ?
Not sure I understand what 'static art' vs tile-based means ... I had the impression that WITE1 was already tile based and easily moddable.

Anyway, I hope that different map mods will be developped soon enough to improve the points I mentioned in my initial message.

I wasn't talking about the stock map but about map mods which really improve WITE1 map. And maybe it was it Jison ? And chemkid made a WITP mod. Not sure. I might have mixed things :-) Anyway, these map mods made both WITE1 and WITP maps absolutely gorgeous and highly playable as compared to the stock version. Hope teh same will occur with WITE2.

username01 -> RE: The new map (5/24/2021 3:34:22 PM)

I tend to agree. Would like to see Towns/Cities a bit more prominent. The thing with maps on wargames though, is they can't really be 'overdone' too much.

Great_Ajax -> RE: The new map (5/24/2021 4:09:38 PM)

In Wite1, the map was drawn as some kind of computer art file, like a jpg. In Wite2, the map art is generated based on the data input into the editor. So any tile changes needed in Wite2 can be made immediately in the editor and the art will automatically update. In Wite1, any significant tile changes would require the artist to redraw the art file.

Going from static tiles to editable tiles in Wite2 was a tradeoff. Nice, hand drawn gorgeous maps were substituted for computer tile generated art that could be edited and changed on demand without having to pay the artist.
