Peresvet -> [Scenario Selection] How to start playing TOAW IV? (5/23/2021 7:55:33 PM)

I tried to play TOAW IV a couple of times, but I was never able to play more than a couple of turns. Every time it feels that I started with a wrong scenario or wrong settings. As I understand, TOAW IV adds quite a few new rules, but most standard scenarios seem to be created for TOAW III, without those rules. So, I wonder if it is a good idea to play those scenarios with TOAW IV rules at all. Most other scenarios are plain huge to begin with. Also, each scenario seems to be a completely separate game with its own units and with different time, map and unit scales. So, I'm totally confused and have no idea which scenarios in which order and with which settings I should play to get familiar with the game. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Here's my thread on scenario complexity:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4538346

So, at least you will have an idea which scenarios require the least effort to play.

Thanks. Yes, it can be a good starting point. However, that comparison doesn't take into account whether a scenario is PO enabled or not, right? It's yet another headache how one can understand whether a scenario is suitable to play against AI or not. Most scenario descriptions don't mention if it is PO enabled.

Actually, all TOAW III and IV scenarios explicitly state in the briefing whether they are PO programmed or not. Only the ACOW scenarios don't say and that's because every one of them were so programmed.

What ACOW stands for?

What ACOW stands for?

"A Century of Warfare"

It was the last Talonsoft version of TOAW. TOAW III suceeded it.

All you need to know is that, of the scenarios provided with TOAW IV, they either say whether they are PO programmed or, if there is no such statement, assume they are the older ACOW scenarios, which were all PO programmed.

Oh. It's really good to know. For example, "WWII - East Front/Smolensk 41" seems to be reasonably sized but does not mention PO. Until now I assumed that it is not suitable for single-player. Thanks a lot!

I did a series of stuff that might help you with the learning curve, it is links to my "encyclopedia" project. One sec will find links

I bumped the encyclopedia threads. .... I had a pre-WWI also, can't find it right now.

I was working on the volume for WWII: East Front when the shim0shams came to town. I think I'll start working on it again. It was pretty cool going through all those scenarios, looking for exactly the same info as you.

And while Bob is correct, all that info is FREELY AVAILABLE if you want to kill your eyes and mash your noggin trying to FIND it, my thing encyclopedia was my meager attempt to pull it all together, index it, and .... VOILA you can FIND sh*t.

Okay, well, enjoy! Best to learn playing a veteran (me, US ARMY, 2AD, 1983 - 1985). I got kicked out b/c I'm a no-account sh*t-bird :) but I'll give a ride, hit me up and let me know what you want to play :)

Something with as much information as you have included in your pedia needs to be pinned in my opinion.

Note that if you have TOAW III, all the ACOW scenarios are in the "Classic TOAW" folder. So, that would allow you to identify them. For TOAW IV, we nixed that folder and spread them out into their topic folders.

Thank you! That's indeed a very helpful summary of available scenarios. I wish there were a similar comparison for East Front.

There is a sortable table of the out-of-box scenarios for TOAW IV here: https://www.wargamewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=TOAW_IV:_Scenarios

Sort by category (to sort click the column heading) and you can see the WWII - East Front
