Jukipo -> Soviet AI abuses supply rules (5/28/2021 10:00:15 AM)

I am playing the 1941 campaign with 110 % bonus to the AI. The computer is able to move its units freely every turn to maintain continuous frontline. I have not had problems with Ai movement rules until now. I have now entered Caucasus area. My troops are near Stalingard and I have captured Mozdok as well. The only Soviet supply rail goes on the eastern edge of Kalmykia desert. Soviet divisions are on the western edge of the desert. Distance from the rail line is about 250 miles. How can they transfer enough supply to those 20 divisions? They can’t. Every turn computer teleports fully supplied units to the area. When they run out of supply, they are teleported away. This is very unrealistic and annoying. It really breaks the immersion of a realistic strategy game.

Another example from the south. The computer maintains considerable forces on the north edge of Caucasus mountains. The only supply road goes over the mountains. Fresh divisions appear out of nowhere.

That's basically the crutch AI gets when you hit 110% (unlimited administrative movement). You aren't going to get AI that is bound by same limitations as player above 110% morale. There's really no way to get the AI to play like a smart player with good lines unless they're able to bend some rules. I get it sucks but in a game of this scale to have even competent AI is amazing, but to there has to be some crutches.

I'd either play with less than 110% morale or just accept the increased AI challenge at 110%.

Gary is working on a new AI routine to cover areas that only required light screening (like the area of the Caucasus you mention, or areas on the Finnish front. He's working on this with Trey's new Caucasus scenario as the test bed. It's possible, although certainly not easy, that he could adjust the AI to try not to do as much warping into these areas. As the AI exists in the base game, Bamilus is correct that there's no easy way to keep the AI from doing this without having it play a much weaker game overall. I assume the AI only warps units in when the line is changing or units get weakened. If the line stalemates, than units will just stay and get poor supply. This will eventually cause them to weaken, at which point the AI will pull them out and warp in a new unit. Since these were areas of little activity, it shouldn't really be much to the AI's advantage unless it is using it to go on the offensive.

Also want to mention that even though the AI can currently warp in units, it doesn't do an amazing job of forming a strong line composition. The AI frequently puts weak brigades in to create a cohesive line (which a good player would not do. They would either make a shorter line further back or accept some gaps but have stronger units around the gaps to give some counter-attack defense in depth and make encirclement harder). So while it may look intimidating, you can find weak spots in the line and punch through consistently. When viewed from that perspective, I think it's quite fair.
