Hello,

I'm a newbie with this game, and on my first attempt at reaching Smolensk, I had no problems up until turn 7 (August 3rd), reaching the edge of Smolensk with the bulk of the army group. On turn 7 though, a lot of my mobile units had around 50% fuel and ammo, which isn't enough to operate with. I kept my HQ's to within 5 hexes of their units, but I was stretching things with the rail head, which I had advanced (a double rail line via Vilnius) to within 4 hexes of Minsk. I also built depots in Vilnius, Minsk, Balbasava, and Vitebsk. I had in an earlier aborted start to the game tried to advance the rail to Minsk from Brest Litovsk, but it was going to take way too long. Note with the line I have going to Minsk, I used 4 FBDs to do it, which seems a bit extreme to me, but I can't see how it can be done otherwise.

Thoughts on this? Where am I going wrong? I know historically the Germans took Smolensk around this time, and were within a couple of weeks ready for their next offensive, so it must be possible with the game mechanics? Note also I have had no problems in the north and south, making great progress with both.

Cheers, Mark

My typical rail repair for AGC is use the 1st PG FBD on the double line from Brest Litovsk to Minsk in the south. At Minsk I decide whether to head southeast to Gomel or help towards Smolensk. The 3rd PG FBD is used with the AGN's 4 PG FBD to convert to Vilnius where the 4th PG FBD heads towards Pskov and Leningrad while the 3rd PG FBD continues on to Minsk. From Minsk the 3rd PG will head to Poltosk-Vitebsk or Smolensk depending on how the front line is going (if still battling for the land bridge then Poltosk). The 3rd PG FBD going that way should reach Minsk about turn 3 or 4 while the 4th PG FBD will usually reach Minsk on turn 5 or so.

Thanks Carlkay58,

I am doing something seriously wrong then - I manually set my FBD to repair each rail hex, and that takes a turn for each hex. I can't find instructions in the manual to otherwise manage them unfortunately. Should they do this automatically? I tried not doing anything manually with them initially and they didn't seem to do much. No wonder I have run into supply problems.

Press the RRC button to fix the railroad in the hex when you have the FBD on it. Move to next hex.

Thanks! Just tested it successfully. I thought they had to stay in the hex being repaired.

Look at 21.6.1 and then 22.6 (all the sub-sections). That will show you how to use the manual rail repair options as well as which units can carry out automatic repairs

Thanks Loki. I re-read those sections, and I can see how I misread them originally. Many thanks everyone!
