FalconSMG1 -> Anyone have BAcon Mod active link? (6/15/2021 9:36:26 PM)

As the subject says, the link in the original threads is inactive.

Ask on the thread. Roger Bacon is active there

Yeah-the last two posts were requests for the link (8th and 9th June) and have gone unanswered so i thought I would try here!

Maybe RogerBacon is on holidays[:)]

I too needed my BaconMod fix. I dug through reading the last 8 or so pages of the Bacon Mod thread and found a working link to version 1.81r for Windows 10 build 2004. This file is detected as a virus by Chrome, Windows Defender and likely others. I can confirm this as they both said it was a Trojan, but each said it was a different one. Purportedly to Bacon's amusingly frustrated posts, version 1.82 also detects as a virus.

I kicked on tcpdump on the firewall to my "Keter" machine, fired up a clean Windows 10 Home image and installed all the things, disabled Chrome's protection and repeatedly insured Windows Defender that it wanted that hot, dirty Bacon application inside of it and despite all the machine's protests, gave it a try. Started a new game, tested the ctrl+e functionality and quit out. The result was no new interesting connections opened to the internet other than MsMpEng (Microsoft Malware Protection Engine) whining back to Microsoft, no UPNP requests for my router to open up any port and Bacon-modded Distant Worlds worked just fine.

As always, you need to make the decision as to whether or not you believe it is safe or not. Bacon has put a lot into his mod over the years and I highly doubt he's going to drop malware into it. His work has been one of love and dedication to the game and I chose to take the mod author's word and reputation over the processing of a detection engine. Post 1222 in the Bacon Mod thread has the link.

My guess is the frustration of dealing with MS and other vendors each time he updates is taking its toll on the poor guy. It's a headache no developer wants to deal with.

I'll stick to Retreat1970's logic in post #1268 on 1/14/2021:

I've been playing "virus" bacon for a looooong time. It's good to see you'll join us now that it's "safe". :)

edit, addendum: If RogerBacon ever reads this, since it might be a futile endeavor to fight the anti-malware companies, so it'd be great if he shared a SHA2 or SHA3 hash of the exe to make sure we've got the same file he publishes if we get it from another source as I had to do.
