Is there any reason not to just fall back at the 1st sign of encirclement in 41? Like just try to hold leningrad rzhev tula orel line. Is there point to trying to slow the german taking smolensk and lose bunch of unit?

lots of reasons - have a look at the VP chart, work out what you lose and then give your opponent the +6 time bonus for gaining those cities ahead of time.

Then ... well the infantry will arrive at your defensive line fresh and ready to go. German infantry can easily dismantle your first line and let their Pzrs get into your rear.

Somewhere you need to degrade the German army and its not on the outskirts of Rzhev and Tula.

Your big risk is the Germans take what you've given them, do a round of attacks, dig in for the winter (they will easily pass the 1941 loss conditions) and start their 1942 offensive extremely strong and right next to Moscow.

Are you playing against the AI?

A possible strategy is to put the survival of your 1941 army first. Put up a layered defence at key terrain and river lines, avoid to fight in clear terrain whenever possible. Keep all mobile units as reserves to support the front, and let them rest and refit when possible. Don't waste units in city fortresses unless absolutely vital, instead fall back and build a new 2 hex wide defence line in the rear, as soon as the Germans break through.

Decide early on what you want to defend. In 1941 it is possible to stop the German AI at the Novgorod-Luga-G'dov line in 1941, and in the south the entrances to Crimea can be held. If you hold on to Crimea the Kherson-Kremenchug-Bryansk-Vyazma line can also be held.

It should enable you to field a strong 4+ million men army in time for your blizzard counteroffensive in 1941, where you should simply aim to inflict as much damage on the Germans as you can, making up for any possible lighter German losses during the summer and autumn.

Be prepared for a surprisingly strong German offensive in the summer of 1942, it will stretch your defenses to the breaking point, but simply employ the same prudent strategy and preserve your army, then all will be good by the winter of 1942.

It is quite possible that none of this will work against a human opponent. :-)

What you can do in 1941 :

- evacuate to the rear or merge unready and depleted units
- cut communications, reopen sealed encirclement especially with encircled units. A good use of the area between the border and Minsk can earn you one or two turn, which is huge in the summer of 1941
- use bypassed and doomed units to recapture cities, chokepoints, airfields, railways
- cut off armored spearheads wherever possible.
- sector by sector, select some units to conduct grinding attacks. Boost the inf divisions with whatever batalions you get, then retreat them immediately a few hexes. The idea is to grind down combat preparation, lower MPs etc of the german. Summer and autumn will be gruesome, but it is the only way to grind down the german offensive power for the winter. Remember that, as a rule of thumb, attack is significantly superior to defense.
- with the remaining forces, keep the control of chokepoints, cities, river lines &c. The general idea is to deny liberty of movement to the opfor
- when you retreat, don't burn all your mps (unless complete encirclement is imminent)
- Fall back 3-4 hexes, usually no more. Let the german pay something for each hex.
- send to the rear/SR badly mauled units and hqs

What you should avoid in 1941:
- retreat uniformly or too quickly
- abandon prematurely key cities
- counterattack everywhere

Unimpeded, there’s nothing stopping the Germans from being on the outskirts of Leningrad by the sixth week. At that point you lose Leningrad, either now or in ten weeks of slugging.

They can have infantry up and ready at Smolensk by the fifth week and Vyazama by six if no one is stopping them, at which point you have a real chance of losing Moscow.

And while there are no game changers down south, if they overrun the D-Town /Zapo line on week seven, AGS will take Rostov easily, butcher you with well prepared mobile formations in the winter, and be halfway to their ‘42 objectives before the weather even clears up.

In return you’ll start your fight with a couple hundred thousand more men, but you’ll start it in the open steppes east of Bryansk and past the Dnepr in the south, at which point the fresh and ready German player will wage a destruction campaign and casually destroy most of your forces there without having to worry about VP, letting him butcher you freely.

If you had exquisite timing and your opponent over committed early, you might knock him around some before your readiness burnt off and maybe even hold Moscow:Leningrad, but for those kills you have basically handed him a near perfect ‘41 campaign score, probably with Sevastopol to boot. Keep in mind he only needs to do 56 points better than history to win a decisive in ‘42. A perfect ‘41 campaign is 42 of those…want to bet the game he can’t find 12 more anywhere and that you can play a perfect counter offensive through Dec ‘44 or lose to the check there? It’s a bet you can take, but I certainly wouldn’t have the stomach for it
