This is serious stuff, especially for the older but very popular games such as Gary Grisby's BTR, WITP-AE and TOAW IV.
Is Matrix Games doing anything pro-active to head off the inevitable anguish of blameless gamers? Such as talking to Microsoft to make sure the new Windows's software is harmless?

You are right. Compatibility of old engines with Windows 11 will be to monitor closely.
I think there is a beta already available to start testing.

But, what if WITP-AE doen't work anymore? [X(]

I fixed that for you.[;)]

But just use a virtual box with a previous OS.

You can also have different systems on the same computer and can boot any of them on start up.

zakblood -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/26/2021 4:34:52 PM)

what ever worked on windows 10 will or should work with 11, so far with my testing with the beta version of 11, not had a single issue, then again my hardware isn't anything special and i don't load junk at start up that i don't need,

had a support question and issue fixed the other day that no one seemed to be able to solve, was a old version of office front end pre installed at start that caused a conflict with a game, unload the overlay and the game worked fine,

so question was asked and replied to,

why use the overlay in the first place?

simple, with it auto loaded at startup, the program loads somewhat quicker, by how much is debatable so to not have it loaded each and every boot, made no difference in load time, but compatibility time it may have fixed more than a few issues.

so as always,

a clean install of windows fixes almost everything as long as you also let windows sort out your drivers, unless you have hardware and your own up to date drivers that are later versions.

and unless you need your 3d glasses, office and motherboard overlays type junk loaded every boot, disable it and have windows load barebones, with next to nothing pre loaded.

sound, AV and steam is about most anyone needs, with 90%+ not even needing the sound program pre loaded as it works find without for most hardware i'm told and have found over he many years of support tbh

rico21 -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/26/2021 5:15:56 PM)

Thanks to share Zak.[&o]
Euh, Windows 11 is the new variant of Microsoft?[:(][:D]

zakblood -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/26/2021 5:24:45 PM)

Ian and Erik opened up a compatibility list for windows 10, don't even think one will be needed for 11 tbh with my tests on the beta version, but who knows with the retail one as still items may change, but the overall code hasn't that much and more of a UI change and the way it updates and doesn't need a restart or reboot so often, but if it does end up being the case one will be done and posted in the same format as before or better,...

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3924215

i don't mind doing a whole catalogue listing for them all again on how to install or get around any issues that may come out with them same format as before in the list shown above.

but nothing so far that worked with windows 10 for me hasn't loaded and worked in 11.

[image]local://upfiles/43185/F6148358C66A48338502905009EDA0C9.jpg[/image]

and for those who think something maybe or maybe not needed to run, my pc is like the picture shows, is plus 8 years old test one and it worked fine on the games part.

the only problem people will have with windows 11, is if there pc / bios or CPU isn't supported, then not a problem either tbh, as it won't install or work so you can stay with windows 10.

as windows 11 really is only for pc's of about 2 years old, maybe a bit more, but for now that's unsure until it's fully released, the preview beta version doesn't even install, just run's in VM atm.

so while i have the chance to test older games, i won't be able to fully install on this test pc either, so no direct comparison with windows 10 on the same hardware.

but as my newest gaming rig is only from last year, i'll have at least 2 pc's in date which windows 11 will work on for the tests to start, as soon as it's gold and a RC candidate is out.

gamer78 -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 12:06:38 AM)

I don't know what Windows 11 will do about directx 11 or 12? Or GG War in West, War in the East 2?

I previously (in february after I've purched a new pc) have sent dxdiag logs .

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4954339 and no reply.

So I didn't buy War in The East 2 at all.

Greybriar -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 2:08:22 AM)

As far as I am concerned, Windows 11 is nothing more than a cash grab by Microsoft.

I have no need for Windows 11 and will stick with Windows 10.

RangerJoe -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 2:48:25 AM)

Words of warning:

"We are from Microsoft, we have something new for you, and we are here to help you!"

I'm the same way. I have a partition for Win 7, but these days, it's linux for me. And with wine, I can run most games I want to. Here's my current game menu (If I added the picture correctly).

zakblood -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 6:56:30 AM)

windows 11 will be free for anyone on windows 10, but saying that, unless the pc is quite new it won't meet the spec of TPM version 2.0 or CPU either, so everyone can carry on on older machines until it's retired, Microsoft declared it would offer updates for 10 years — until October 2025 and by then your pc's will be broken or un useable anyway.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/windows-processor-requirements

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-11-requirements

unless things change as plenty of time for that yet if enough of a outcry is made on any of the above statements etc

There are legitimate ways to get a cheap or even free copy of Windows 10.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 2:57:53 PM)

I remember when we were told Windows 10 would be the last, forever version of Windows. That was still being discussed this year, btw.

https://searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com/opinion/Will-Windows-10-be-the-last-Windows-OS

As for me, I did the Windows Health Check on my PC, and it says it will not be able to run Windows 11. The PC is two years old. But that's okay, because every 4-5 years I get a new one. So I can see using my current PC 2-3 more years and then getting a Win 11 PC.

Just like Windows 10 :)

balto -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/27/2021 3:53:32 PM)

I wonder if it does not have any enhancements to performance or whatever, just more spyware and such so lets say if you can vote via PC in the next election - the trojan software in Windows 11 can fix the election.., not that that ever happened.

I believe it is called Marketing. Microsoft is planning on making money by "giving" Windows 11 away.

Give it away but if it does not work on the customer's current computer then they will have to purchase a new computer - paying for Windows 11 that way.

boatrigm -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (6/28/2021 2:53:34 AM)

Windows 11 for Intel will only support 8th gen and newer processors. My i7-4790k is out of luck.
Biggest issue for me is my Lenovo Y520 gaming laptop with a 7th gen processor.
Bummer. Looks like spending lots of money in my future :( or maybe just switch to Linux/Wine/Proton for playing games.

How? Windows 10, didn't spend any money after I got it.

Same. And I've got WinXP machine on the floor. And father's old PC with 40 MHz processor, MS-DOS 6.22, and Windows 3.01 (or whatever) is still working too.

Greybriar -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (7/2/2021 3:48:17 AM)

I spotted this YouTube video: You Probably WON'T Be Able to Use Windows 11, watched it, and thought it would be appropriate if I shared it here.

If what the YouTuber says in the video is correct, I couldn't "upgrade" to Windows 11 even if I wanted to.

Only 38% or around that will be able to upgrade. I'm not one of them. [;)]

gamer78 -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (7/2/2021 10:10:05 PM)

38% is very big number. It is about US or worldwide?

berto -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (7/2/2021 10:25:08 PM)

I have no problem running my Windows 10 systems until support ends in late 2025. At that time, I will install Linux on them, as I have done with all of my older systems for the past two decades and more.

zakblood -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (7/5/2021 5:03:24 PM)

within a space of just a few days, my windows 11 test pc and another of the same 8 years old vintage with windows 10 on it have died a death, ah well can't say i've not had my moneys worth.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 and one with a AMD card
Dedicated Memory: 4053 MB

both overclocked at 4.2 and no issues for years, changed a few HDD in them, changed the VGA cards, added some SSD

so only left with my net pc, one laptop and a old pc connected to a printer in the summer house and my gaming rig, seems i'm going again into the loft and into my bin of spare parts and will again build me something to test with, have more than a few I7 and M/B's left, so a week or 2 i'll be back up and running some more test pc's.

but overall, that's not the point of the post, it's windows 11, can't say i'm impressed, just not worth it for me, there's nothing in the new version that would make me want it atm, as don't use android apps, not interested in locking down the pc more than i already do and not bothered about the new desktop, so in my tests, there's no real speed difference, as windows 10 already uses the same faster versions and the newest memory management tools anyway.

so can't say i'll be installing again any time soon, unless something changes in the beta branch and i think it's worth it....

samrich -> RE: Windows 11 is Coming (7/19/2021 11:08:18 AM)

How much will windows 11 cost?
