stww2 -> Loitering SAMs in CMO? (6/26/2021 12:34:12 AM)

A friend shared this article with me today and asked if anything like it featured in CMO: https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/new-iranian-missile-reported-to-be-loitering-sam

It appears to be a loitering surface to air munition. I didn't see anything in the database (and I have to wonder if something like this would require new mechanics and not simply a new database entry), but maybe someone else knows more?

I've not noticed a loitering SAM yet, only loitering ARMs.

The WeaponCode (s) used for the loitering ARMs 3003, seems specific for ARMs, so I would think at a minimum a new flag would be needed beyond the added weapon entries and probably as you mention at lease some logic tweaks to handled the situation when it's present. I guess you could slap anti-air all aspect,loal,re-attack,and loiter on a guided weapon with target types of 1001\1002\1003, and cruise atl of like 36k and see if you can get it to work, it might, but probably not as intended in all cases would be my guess. Maybe someone with pro has tried it.[;)] Interesting question.

Before we get hung up on seeing if they're in the game, I'd like to see if it's really real. Those crazy Iranians have been known to pull a fast one now and then.

I'm interested regardless of if they are "real" or not yet, lets not confuse a 'is it possible' question with a please add this to the game immediately sort of thing. ;)

Well anything is possible in the end. I'm just saying Iran has been known to build things for show.

Saw this this morning made me think of this thread though not related to the SAM domain, but "loitering" munitions more generally.

The latest version of the Tomahawk has loitering capabilities. I'm not sure if its in the game or not, but there was a discussion about trying to get it in.

I actually don't know what would be the utility of loitering SAM. SAMs generally depend on kinetic energy to intercept.

thewood1 -> RE: Loitering SAMs in CMO? (6/28/2021 4:36:14 PM)

I thought the kinetic came from a fragmenting warhead. So I can see the utility of it.

Meaning they cannot catch much when loitering, lacking kinetic/potential energy for interception. Unless having some sort of ramjet etc.

thewood1 -> RE: Loitering SAMs in CMO? (7/3/2021 1:39:57 PM)

I think thats the point. It would have to have some form of air-breathing propulsion.

stww2 -> RE: Loitering SAMs in CMO? (7/3/2021 5:39:05 PM)

The article mentions that the weapon is believed to have air-breathing propulsion; however because it can only fly at subsonic speeds it is believed that it would mainly be a threat to helicopters or Ospreys.

TempestII -> RE: Loitering SAMs in CMO? (7/4/2021 8:46:42 AM)

And Predator / Reaper UAVs.

thewood1 -> RE: Loitering SAMs in CMO? (7/4/2021 1:08:55 PM)

Yeah, that's colors a little of my skepticism. It sounds like the infamous suicide drones, only geared towards slow moving helicopters. The rest is colored by the fact Iran is known to announce stuff that turns out to be a scam.
