Rolfor -> Very disappointed! How to play this Game? (9/1/2003 11:57:01 PM)

Hallo,

I am new to UV. I bought the Game last week here in Germany.

First: I played a lot of Wargames (Talons WF+EF, TOAW 1+2, TacOps, Airborn Aussault, CM 1+2, panzer camapaigns and a lot of others. And I have no Problems to get in. But after some hours with UV I must say:

1) I buy the Game today here in Germanys Media-Markt
On the Gamepackage there is no Hint, that the Game is complete in english, that the Handbock (120 pages) is complete in english. Just a 19 pages hintboock is in German! And If so: Why are not at least the Mission-Briefings translated? I am waiting for the german Version because my englisch is not the best ...

2) I understand nothing!
The ultrashort Tutorial is NO Tutorial and explains nothing!
The Handbook ist full of tables and micromanagement-Lists. I would like to print it out. But a Demoprint shows me, the writing is so small, that I can't read it on the paper. So I MUST read it on the Monitor ...

3) I search the Manual, the Forums and the Web. But I can't find a Beginner Guide, a Step by Step Explanation, a Demo Tour trough a complete Mission, with clear and exactly Orders, Examples.

4) I find not one simple "How to's": (and this belongs to every manual, that has the right to call so !!)

- How to play this game?
- What are the first Steps?
- How to arrange an Assault?
- How to build your Defense?
- How to ...

Yes! I Found many AAR's, but with hyroglyphical Lists of Units without Pictures , and without helpfull Hints. AAR's for People, who know's, how to play this Game. But not for Beginners.

Sorry Matrix, Sorry Developper!
Sure, you are great Wargame-Guys.
But If you don't manage, that Newbee's
have a comfortable "come in" in your
games, i will by my Games in the
Future better from Firms like HPS, SHRAPNEL
or others. Take a Look at the Handbooks of
TacOps4 or Airborne Assault. Look at the
exellent Doc's from Panzer Campaigns (100
Pages only for Beginners PLUS a 200 Page
Manual with the Facts). Or other companies,
who have 5 to 10 Tutorials who covers the
singel aspects of your Games.

The Game is now over one Year old! And there
is no Beginner-Forum, ther is no sticky Thread
with helpfull links to advising Threads.

On your UV-Homepage, the Links to the
screenshots are without Function. Oh, oh, oh ...

Here I will Stop. And that is what I do:

In the next hour, I will go to a Friend, who has a A3-Printer
There I will print the Handbook. I hope I can read it than.
Than I will read the Handbook, make Lists and hope I found
some Hints for the Gameplay between the Lines ...
After this I will take a long search for an AAR, witch I
understand and will try to play it Line for Line.

And I hope, some of you can give me a Tipp, what goes wrong.

Greetings
Rolfor

As another recent newbie I agree that the manual is not the best, even for the game mechanics and a game like UV which takes a different approach from most wargames really needs some sort of player notes or play examples. Having said that the good news is that once you know what you are supposed to be doing it's a great game. What I found very useful are the FAQs, there is one at the top of this page and one at Spooky's web site - http://uncommon-valor.chez.tiscali.fr/ . Also if you read the old threads on this board you can find some useful information, but it does take a long time to look through them as there are about 150 pages!. The AARs will make more sense once you get used to the format of the combat reports in the game.

Welcome to this forum :) Well, to answer your critics, there is a sticky FAQ thread at the top of this forum ;)

However, one thing to know about UV is that the community around this game is really helpful to beginners so please feel free to post as many gameplay questions as you need ... and maybe in a few days (or weeks ?), you are going to be a contributor to the UV FAQ

If you want to, e-mail me directly with specific questions and I will do my best to answer them. I have an art program so I can provide graphics when needed.
