ORIGINAL: fcooke Interesting Ian - I used to do pier side repairs before going into drydock. It seemed to work faster. Going straight into drydock it seemed the repairs focused on the sys damage and not the serious flotation/engine/etc damage. Yes if you have higher bands of sys damage than float. In general terms, I think most people tidy up the system and minor damage of any ship with major float damage at a forward repair anchorage with ARs, before sending it out over blue water and back to the shipyard. There were some discussions of "shuffling" between pierside and shipyard mode a few years back - that is putting the ship (with sys damage) pierside to get faster repair work, and when it hit 80-90% of a repair, moving it into the shipyard to get that accumulated work expended on float damage that does not repair pierside. Also, can anyone confirm that ARDs will repair the most grievous of float damage, but won't repair >5 (or perhaps any) major engine damage? In other words, if you have an ARD and ARs etc and naval support by the hundreds in a size 7 port you can repair 99 sys*, 99 major float ... and only 5 or less major engine damage? [*subject to weapons replacements repairs, but 7 ports with beaucoup naval support aren't too bad on that work].
