I don't see these anywhere in the German OOB.

I could not determine what units they were in. Would they have been directly attached to divisions
or would they have been in Support Units like Pioneers or Reconnaissance Units? I don't see
Reconnaissance Units in game either.

They were part of the equipment of one of the companies of the armoured reconnaissance battalions (Panzeraufklärungsabteilung) of the armoured divisions of Wehrmacht and SS from 1942 onward. Unfortunately I only have German sources as prove.
