Kriegsspieler -> How good is the AI's control of depots? (7/15/2021 3:03:31 PM)

I have been slowly working through various parts of the game off and on for several weeks, and the learning curve is steep but not unexpected, if you've played these games before.

One thing I have learned from this experience is that I really don't like giving the AI control over air directives. It often chooses reasonable missions, but then the auto-assignment of air units to those missions -- especially recon missions -- too often is rather wasteful with my assets. Better to manage that myself.

On the other hand, I find the AI's management of depots to be pretty straightforward and reasonable. Once in a while it piles several depots in the same vicinity for no apparent purpose, but more often than not I just leave its choices in place and move on.

Am I missing something, or would experienced players agree that the AI does a good job managing depots? I don't mind avoiding one more thing to keep rack of, to be honest![:D]

its ok, it has a decent grasp of relative priorities.

my issue is it tends to put too many on priority #4, that tends to pull in trucks that you may want elsewhere

like a lot of the assists, if you primarily play vs the AI it won't harm you (in the end it uses the rules that the AI uses).

the big thing with the whole logistics system is you can spend an awful lot of time squeezing out a little gain from a system with a fair number of hard wired constraints. Equally you can spend a long time fussing over why you are not getting the results you'd ideally want. All fun if that floats your boat but its never going to make that much difference in the end

Thanks for the advice, loki -- that's most useful. I haven't seen the issue with too many depots being put on priority 4, but that may be because so far I have only played the shorter Leningrad and Destruction of SW Front scenarios. The more restricted framework there may be masking the problem. But I'll certainly pay attention to the issue you raise, because it's easily compensated for.

I agree with you that squeezing every last drop of efficiency out of logistics isn't where I have fun in this game. I like that it forces me to pay close attention to logistics, but in the end that's what you hire quartermasters for!

EDIT: Now that you mention it, I see that the AI puts too many depots on high status in the shorter scenarios, too. I'm currently playing Leningrad, which I find quite challenging to do well in. Too much unfavorable terrain! Anyway, despite the depot priorities, my units' supply situation seems not to have been affected all that drastically. Rail access is the more crucial limiting factor. As one might expect.

It leaves or builds depots in the front line which is not ideal for the Soviets in 1941
