russkly -> How to Identify Units Involved in Battles and where they go? (7/20/2021 9:48:31 AM)

In the battle results screen, you can see the units involved in a given battle, but there seems to be no way to go to them directly on the map and therefore see where those units were pre-battle and are now post-battle.

It involves closing the battle results box, switching to Move Mode, trying to remember which units were involved and then manually finding those units on the map.

Am I doing something wrong here?

It would be useful to be able to see which units attacked/defended and, more importantly, to see where those units retreated to where applicable.

How do others do this?

I gave up searching for a way to see the units too, so I always wrote them down and then looked them up manually.

But after a while I stopped doing that, because once you learn the exact details of when a support units helps in a battle and when exactly the reserve units activate, it is no longer needed; you get a feel of it.

This is, however, because I moved ALL support units to corps HQs. It takes a while to do this but once this is done you only have to assign the reserve support units, so it is a one-time time cost. And you can create some super-units that get support from 6 support units nearly every first battle of each turn.

Thanks, Yogol.

So, there isn't a way to click on the Battle Report screen and see on-map which units participated in a given battle and from where they attacked and to where retreated units retreated (FoW allowing of course)? I don't necessarily mean the SUs involved but rather the CUs themselves.

Shame, because the process you described, which is also the one I have adopted, is a bit clunky.

It would be useful to be able to identify easily which enemy units took part in a battle, because that gives you an idea of where battle-weakened units are given that a unit that participates in one or more battles is likely to have lowered CPP and heightened fatigue, all of which helps the player determine possible beneficial areas to attack.

As for SUs, I find your idea of assigning SUs to corps rather than to divisions/brigades, etc. interesting. What is the advantage of doing so exactly, and what is the easiest way to move assigned SUs to corps HQs? Via the Commander's Report?

Also, if assigned to corps-level HQs, how can you determine if at all, to which battles a corps HQ sends such SUs? I mean, it would not be good to see armoured SUs for example run into the ground assisting in battles that you, the player, does not deem appropriate.

So much to learn, esp for someone new to the series...

a) I do not think you can see the units in the commander screen from a given battle, no. Maybe someone else knows a way, but I don't.
However... DURING the battle, if you have battle delay turned on, you will see that all units involved turn red. That includes all HQs that send support units.

b) I assign the SUs manually at the start of the game and right after they come on the battlefield from the reserves (they always go to OKL so you can assign them toany unit you want). I do this from the unit detail screen, not the commander screen.

c) The support units from a HQ will participate in all battles in range from units under that HQ. All of them. Until they are too fatigue, run out of fuel/ammo,...

So, if you want to be sure that they participate in a particular battle, you got to fight that battle first.

So, it is a good idea to have one weaker corps without any SUs and stronger corps with SUs. That way, you can attack weak units with the weak corps and keep the heavy battles for the corps with the SUs.

It is a bit gamey, I admit, but I do not know of another way to keep SUs out of certain fights. It would be a nice option if you can "disable" SUs for certain fights in the UI.

Please note that SUs assigned to an HQ will only assist in a hasty attack if the HQ hasn't moved. The SUS will participate in deliberate attacks even after the HQ moved.

Thanks again for the tips, Yogol.

Looks like I need to do some more experimentation with SU assignment.

Still think it's a shame that you can't click on the participating units in the Combat Report screen and be taken to the map to see where they were/are and also to where retreating units ended up (FoW permitting).

I like to know which units (enemy and allied) fought, esp. if they fought in multiple battles in one turn, and trying to remember or write the unit names down before exiting the Combat Results screen and going back to Move Mode seems a tad agricultural for something so useful.

Or perhaps most players don't feel a need to know which units fought in which battle?
