If you target manpower and start fires, Industry may be destroyed which the Allies, for some reason, do not have the knowledge on how to build more . . . [;)]

Realistically Japan will never be able to reach the firestorm levels necessary to completely destroy industries in a competitive game. Too few bombers, too far away targets. Be content with hitting HI and Res directly for strategic points and that's it

Firestorms definitely not but I was wondering if fires could inflict enough damage to warrant my targeting of manpower. Seems the consensus is no. I will shift my targeting during the next turn.

December has passed and a new year has arrived. Below is the score as 1942 dawns. The game has been quite bloody in the air and although I am ahead in the air war I definitely made some mistakes and had some bad luck with bad weather which led to more losses than I would like.

Naval Losses

In terms of naval losses, I already lost a heavy cruiser which is quite unfortunate. Given Francesco's aggressiveness and my own early push into dangerous waters I also lost a large number of merchant ships (~30 xAKs and ~20 xAKls). Fortunately, with the exception of the Palembang antiaircraft convoy these were almost all empty ships.

In terms of enemy losses, I have confirmed the sinking of 4 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser, 6 light cruisers, between 25-30 destroyers, and more than 15 submarines.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (8/22/2021 3:29:16 PM)

January 1-2, 1942

The pace of operations continues at a rapid clip. Over the last two days:

1) The KB strikes on Australian industry are reaching their conclusion, thus far they have netted ~ 1,000 VP. Not bad!
2) Port Blair is captured by Japanese paratroopers.
3) Sinkawang is taken by storm, resulting in the destruction of 20 enemy aircraft on the ground.
4) Tarakan loses 24 oil wells damaged to a well planned series of strikes by Francesco.
5) Japanese forces at Singapore are almost as rested as they can be in malaria country and the 38th Division has almost arrived.
6) Japanese forces advancing from Moulmein are about to cross into Pegu with the mission of closing the Burma road.
7) The ruse to trap enemy forces in Luzon is a smashing success. The best American/Filipino forces including all their armor chase down a Naval Guard unit that acted as bait all the way to Legaspi only to hit thin air as the Guard is evacuated by sea. Meanwhile Japanese forces land behind the enemy and trap them, and are now also converging on Manila.
8) Imperial armor routs the Chinese 8th Route Army north of Sian, while the Naval Guard keeps holding on against repeated Chinese attacks even as it reaches the end of its endurance.

The Philippines will see some pitched battles soon but the two key theaters of action right now are Java and China. I am attempting to prep the landings around Java without KB support which is not easy given the influx of enemy air/warships as well as their carriers. Southern Sumatra is almost entirely in my hands however which will provide a great springboard for operations once Singapore is captured.

In China, I am advancing forward past Sian despite what I expect to be an imminent effort by Francesco to cut the road behind me. I have planned for this though and will have forces allocated to deal with any such effort. It's a calculated risk that I am comfortable taking.

Haven't been able to update on the progress of this game for the last week since Francesco has been very busy with work. I'm not sure when I will be getting the next turn, but hopefully soon? It's hard to pause for so long at this stage of the game when so much is happening!

I miss those days!

Andy if you are up to taking the Japanese side I am ready to roll. It seems everyone and their grandmother wants to play as the Allies but no one wants to take Japan. [:D] It's a shame really because the Japanese side is a lot of fun!

I finally got the turn and there is good news and bad news. The good news is Singapore has been captured. The bad news is that just like in the Empire of the Sun game, the industry, shipyards, resources, etc. are completely wrecked.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (9/8/2021 12:13:39 AM)

Unfortunately the turns are very few and far between now. We used to do at least a turn a day but we have only managed 2 turns in the last 15 days. I am also unsure if this is really a temporary issue or if this a more enduring one. I don't blame Francesco in the slightest of course, as real life is real life and I can understand how one may find themselves in a situation where they don't have time to play. However, I don't think I can continue to play with such few turns as frankly I even forget where we left off. I will give it another week or so and see how it goes.

The other issue is the complete lack of players willing to play as the Japanese. I tried to get an Allied game going and just have this one be a secondary slower campaign but everyone seems keen to only play as the Allies. I can manage two games if I am playing different sides, but two of the same side would just confuse me to no end. Maybe it's time I start considering other games - any recommendations for something as immersive as WITPAE?

RangerJoe -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (9/8/2021 12:42:12 AM)

I will be honest with you. I have never done a PBEM of any game, I have never finished any game against the AI past 1943 when the computer gives up. If I did try a PBEM, it would probably be a scenario to start with to get the hang of things. But right now I have other things that need to be done, however in a week or so . . .

Plus, you are way above my caliber of player . . . [&o]

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (9/8/2021 11:48:14 AM)

You've been around for a while and clearly know the game very well RJ. I think it's a great idea to try out a PBEM, especially with a scenario first. [sm=00000436.gif]

Andy Mac -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (9/8/2021 3:37:40 PM)

Even players willing to play Japan probably wouldnt play you having seen how you wiped the floor in previous games - it has to be fun for both sides only masochists like me would take you on and I am allied only ;) ;) :)

We have a pause in the game due to Francesco's work commitments. In theory at least we should resume the game in a few days.

January 8, 1942

More than a month later, we are back to this game. It took me a while to remember what I was up to but I am starting to get back into the groove of things.

With Singapore captured I am concentrating my airpower to neutralize Java where Francesco had assembled a substantial aerial and naval presence. From Palembang I can run escorted bombing strikes all the way to Soerabaja which I am taking advantage of. Today was a good day in the air war for the Japanese Empire.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/15/2021 8:26:15 PM)

January 9-10, 1942

Positive results in the air continued over the last two days. Francesco attempted sneaky strikes at both Hong Kong and Tarakan but I was well prepared and my fighters ready. He lost some B-17 bombers over Hong Kong and a bunch of Banshees, P-40Es, and Dutch 139WH-3s over Tarakan.

In the SRA Japanese bombers and fighters have achieved aerial superiority over Java from their airbases in southern Sumatra. During the last couple of turns Dutch sub O23 was sunk in port at Soerabaja and four British light cruisers were damaged. Francesco is valiantly disputing the waters between Sumatra and Java with destroyers and submarines. He sank a few sub chasers last turn but lost DD Gridley in return.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/15/2021 8:42:59 PM)

China

The really interesting theater right now is China. In the east I launched an attack at Wenchow which achieved a 1 to 1 result. With forts now at 0, I have ordered a follow up attack to see if I can get to the crucial 2 to 1. Interestingly, I think Francesco is moving to stage a big offensive in the Canton and Hong Kong area. If I am not careful my only division in this sector will be at risk of being encircled but other than that and as long as both Canton and Hong Kong reman in my hands, I am more than happy for him to play around here while I carry out my operations further north.

Speaking of the north, I had a couple of very strange teleportation incidents which are always frustrating, including one where there were no enemy troops at all near my troops. Besides that though things are progressing quite nicely. Kungchang has been secured and the oil flow to the Chungking plains thus cut off. Sian itself is now cut off from both Kungchang and Chungking - I don't think Sian produces anywhere near enough supply to feed the significant Chinese armies in and around it. Japanese troops have also infiltrated from Ichang and captured Patung which will be turned into a major airfield/supply point with engineers soon arriving to begin construction. Thanks to one of the teleportation issues, an empty Ankang was retaken by the Chinese but I still hope to take it back once more in 5-7 days. Japanese troops in the meantime are moving to secure the secondary road to the west of the base. I think my blitz through the area has now put me in a decent position for early breakout into the Chunkging plain.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/22/2021 12:59:33 AM)

January 11-16, 1942

Free time has been sparse lately given the two games I have going on so I have not been updating this AAR as much as I would like. Time for a comprehensive roundup!

China

China is always a blast to play whether on the Japanese or the Chinese side. The Imperial advance is continuing here at a relentless pace, neutralizing resistance where possible and otherwise screening and bypassing where it would be too difficult to do so. I am on track to have the first Japanese infantry divisions break out into the Chungking plain before the end of January. The two Japanese pincers have almost connected north of Ankang and a gigantic Chinese army is trapped in the Sian pocket. To the south, Wenchow was seized a couple of days ago by the Empire. Finally, the Chinese have massed a very large force in the Canton/Hong Kong sector which is a very advantageous development. As long as neither Canton or Hong Kong fall I am more than happy to see masses of Chinese troops get bogged down here. I don't think they will so no reinforcements will be sent to this sector.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/22/2021 1:11:36 AM)

Burma

The advance in Burma is going quite well thus far. I am not sure but I believe I have cut the Burma road already with the seizure of Toungoo? Japanese troops have invested Rangoon but are waiting for the arrival of some base forces before they take the city. I am careful to not take the infrastructure here until my air defense are in place to counter the inevitable air strikes.

Interestingly, Francesco has landed some armor and anti-aircraft guns at Ramree Island and they are making their way forward in what I assume is an effort to reinforce China. I am trying to set up blocking positions to prevent them from doing so but it isn't looking likely that I will stop the armor at least from making it through.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/22/2021 1:24:52 AM)

South/Southwest Pacific

Most of New Britain, New Guinea, and the Solomons have been seized. Port Moresby is the exception and an intentional one at that. I am hoping he reinforces or attempts to reinforce it so that I can then land with a hammer and bag the whole lot. Either way it can wait while I take other objectives with the limited forces currently available.

Today the 65th Brigade, the 144th Regiment, and some base forces landed on La Foa next to Noumea. Francesco had (unsuccessfully) attempted to intercept the transports with a surface force but Shokaku and Zuikaku were on hand to send CL Achilles and a destroyer to the bottom for their efforts.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/22/2021 1:39:29 AM)

Philippines

A decent effort here from Francesco in using his paltry air force to harass me and keep me from getting complacent. As detailed in some previous posts however, the Japanese have successfully trapped the best Allied units in southern Luzon. They are attempting to make it back to Manila but I am confident I will prevent them from doing so. I have attempted a single deliberate attack on Manila thus far but the odds were not great even if the overall casualties were at the same level for both sides.

That's sensible - I'd look to take it overland from Buna (which for the IJ is a much more useful base anyways) and save the shipping for use elsewhere.

Ramree and Akyab at this stage is a elaborate POW camp for the Allies. I'd look to see if you can exploit that. A nifty '42 offensive to close the NE hexside of Akyab and shuttle bombardment missions from Rangoon can net you a nice haul if the Allied player isn't diligent about guarding hexsides.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/22/2021 1:48:06 AM)

DEI

After having secured air superiority over the area, I have landed six divisions worth of troops on Java a couple of days ago. My aim here is to move very fast to seize the island in order to free up the troops for future operations. This is probably my proudest achievement of this game thus far. I have continued on with my conquest of the DEI without the KB and in the face of massed enemy warships and carriers. I am hoping I don't screw up the great start. To the east as previously mentioned Kendari and Ambon have been seized.

SRA

Light cruiser Durban, previously damaged in a Japanese air raid on Soerabaja, is sunk by a Japanese submarine near Java. Elsewhere on the island advancing Japanese forces seize the Dutch mountain redoubt at Bandoeng. In the Philippines however a small Japanese destroyer is heavily damaged by a bomb from a low flying P-40E.

China

With the threat to the Palembang oil diminished and the Japanese largely in control of the airspace over Java, I have been able to free up more of my fighter units for operations elsewhere. I sent the Tainan group to China were its presence was immediately felt with a sweep over Changsha that shattered a significant force of Chinese and AVG fighter aircraft.

January 19, 1942

A ferocious battle is developing with the gigantic Chinese army that is encircled in the Sian pocket. Francesco has more than 5,000 AV in there and is launching furious attacks in an attempt to break through my lines. After smashing into one of my columns as shown in last turn's update, he attacked another one of my armies two hexes northwest of Sian this time around. The Japanese troops once more held their ground but these attacks are definitely causing casualties even if the Chinese suffer more. Both the IJAAF and the IJNAF have been ordered to organize a maximum effort in support of the hard pressed troops on the ground. They shall not pass!

January 20, 1942

I ordered an armor only attack on the now retreating Chinese stack northeast of Sian. Plenty of air support was assigned for the attack but weather grounded more than 80% of my bombers. The armor still did a good number on the Chinese however:

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Where the Chrysanthemums Grow - DesertWolf101 (J) vs ITAKLinus (A) (10/27/2021 4:11:30 AM)

January 21, 1942

An interesting turn today with plenty of action in the air.

SRA

I landed the 5th Infantry Division on Luzon to help speed up the Philippine conquest. I am currently chasing down the previously trapped enemy units in southern Luzon and once I bag them up I will move to seize Manila with overwhelming force.

In the DEI, Francesco flew in some heavy bombers into Soerabaja to attempt another strike at the Palembang oil. Soerabaja however was subjected to heavy Japanese airstrikes which caught some of the bombers on the ground. This came after a Zero sweep knocked out most of the remaining Dutch fighter defenses. The Allied aircraft that did reach Palembang were met by a solid defense from the Oscars and no hits were scored on the oil.

Francesco also bombed Bangkok's port facilities from Rangoon but I had anticipated this potential threat and the only ships in port were a few minetenders that promptly sunk.

South/Southwest Pacific

Noumea was assaulted and taken today.

Near Port Moresby, the Shokaku and Zuikaku were transiting through the area with unfortunate timing. Francesco moved in almost 70 P-40E fighters into the base to ambush Nell bombers from Rabaul. I had stood them down for the turn to not have them be predictable victims, but I had overlooked the transit of the carriers through the area. The Shokaku promptly sent in strikes against Francesco's CAP trap during both the morning and afternoon phases and although its Zeros took quite a few Warhawks down the cost was heavy in aircaft and elite aircrew.
