I'd like to confirm how AA SUs behave exactly:

is it the case that for producing AA fire, AA SUs only impact the hex they are in?

Thus are these true statements:

1 An AA SU in a Front level HQ only protects the hex the HQ is present in.

2 An AA SU in an army/corps level HQ protects the hex that the HQ unit is present in.

3 An AA SU in an army/corps level HQ will only protect an assigned ground unit if the AA SU is auto-committed by the HQ to a battle in which the ground unit is involved and enemy air is present.

4 An AA SU in an army/corps level HQ will never help an assigned ground unit repel direct ground attack by enemy air, unless the HQ happens to be stacked with said unit (or if enemy air flight path happens to cross the HQ hex)

5 An AA SU at STAVKA will only defend the hex occupied by STAVKA

Thanks

6. Will AA SU's participate in ground combat I'd applicable (attached to a combat unit or commited by HQ)?

I obviously have German Flak 88's used as field artillery or as AT guns in mind, but curious if all AA SU's can participate in ground combat.

You should check out section 19.3 in the manual which covers Anti-Aircraft defensive combat.

To answer your question: AA SUs impact the hex they are in as well as adjecent hexes.

Questions 1/2 and 6: The AA unit in a Front HQ will protect the hex it is in and the ones adjecent to it. The same goes for Army/Corps level and STAVKA.

Question 3: An AA SU in a Army/Corps level HQ might join a battle if it passes the rolls. In that case its AA power will be used both to combat enemy air assets and can also be used in ground combat. Note that there doesnt need to be an enemy air unit present for the SU to activate, that only depends on the rolls.

Question 4: I am unsure about this but i believe it is correct. An AA unit sitting in a HQ not stacked with the combat unit will not assist the unit if they are being attacked by air. To mitigate these air attacks, you need to attach AA SUs to the units directly. This is why you will see German players attach SP AA units to their forward panzer and motorized divisions.
