Q-Ball -> Damaged Aircraft Return to Pool? (8/12/2021 3:04:13 PM)

Question: When you disband a fragment of damaged aircraft, and the message indicates that SOME aircraft will be return to the pool, what does SOME actually mean?

I understand if the disband button is red they are all destroyed, that is clear

But of those SOME, what % or how many eventually end-up back in the pool?

I know they do not show up in the loss report, but it seems like they don't always come back to the pool either.....they are just lost in space

I think some can immediately be redistributed to needy units using the same aircraft and within range.
There could also be a die roll applied to see how many go to the pool and how many are "lost in transit", as ops losses when transferring sometimes happen. Or perhaps damaged aircraft and their pilots are stuck on the base and destroyed if the base falls.

I take the wording to be an encouragement to try and move the aircraft to an airfield where disbanding will result in all aircraft and pilots being saved. You might have to use a ship to lift the unit off if the island is very isolated.

If at all possible, transfer the fragment to another air unit which can then repair them. This is useful for when an air unit withdraws but you want to save the airplanes.

SOME means the ready aircraft.
The unready aircraft will be lost.
IIRC the message includes a reference to losing the unready aircraft.

If I recall correctly, some of the damaged aircraft may be repaired and returned to the pool - but don't count on that.
