RFalvo69 -> Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/19/2021 9:12:45 PM)

Spurned by the discussion about "The Green Knight".

1) Midway (my mother was a war movie nut; this movie alone first spurned my interest for military history (*) and then for joining the Navy)
2) Ghostbusters
3) The Young Frankenstein
4) Airplane!
5) Dario Argento's Phenomena (the best thing in having a thing for Jennifer Connelly is that she grew up with me, so I always had a thing for her across the ages [:'(])

No Star Wars. I liked it, but I was already reading "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov (I started reading early) and I found it a fun escapade but nothing more.

(*) My very first military history book was "The Great Naval Battles in the Mediterranean: 1940-43" by Arrigo Petacco. I was 10 and I was very surprised to see that Midway was not mentioned...

I was between fifth and sixth grade when "The Longest Day" was released. I and all my friends eagerly attended the first showing at our base - huge event. I considered it the Greatest Film Ever at the time. (It's slipped a bit since).

A year later came "Bye Bye Birdie". I was just old enough to really appreciate Ann-Margaret = Greatest Sex Symbol Ever at the time. (She's only slipped a little since).

James Taylor -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/20/2021 3:38:39 AM)

James Arness as "The Thing"

bomccarthy -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/20/2021 9:25:11 PM)

Sticking to when I was a pre-teen (through 1977):

Saw in the theater:
Jaws
Scrooge (with Albert Finney)
Gumball Rally (we went to see the other movie in a double feature, but this stuck with my siblings and me. Writers and producers of Cannonball Runwere angry at this "ripoff", but Gumball beat them in release and was a much funnier movie with more interesting cars, and Raul Julia had much more talent then anyone in Cannonball)

Watched on TV:
Frankenstein
King Kong
Planet of the Apes
The Norliss Tapes (intended as a TV series pilot, but never went further; streaming on YouTube)

Watched in my friends' garage (their dad was a high school teacher who worked for Disney during the summers - he was allowed to borrow films for private viewings):
The Love Bug
The Absent-Minded Professor
Mary Poppins (probably more memorable because we felt special for being able to see a major movie that was only released to theaters for relatively brief runs)

OldSarge -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/21/2021 6:10:09 PM)

There were a bunch.
Forbidden Planet. I still think of this as the best of it's genre, I'm glad there hasn't been a remake.
War of the Worlds. This is the only movie I can recall that included Jack Northrop's 'Flying Wing'. As a side note, in 1980, before Northrop died. He was granted a special security exemption to be allowed to visit the B-2 development facility. Northrop saw vision reborn
Patton. George C. Scott was epic in this film, first saw it at the Saturday matinee back int the day.
A Bridge Too Far.
Battle of Britain. A classic that still stands the test of time.
Logan's Run.
The Andromeda Strain.
The Wild Bunch.
Cross of Iron.
Strategic Air Command.
The Omega Man.
Soylent Green.
To Hell And Back. Starring Audie Murphy himself.
The Red Badge Of Courage. Another Audie Murphy movie.

There are other movies whose names are escaping me at the moment.

So what age span are we talking here. How old of a kid? Or young.

jhyden -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/22/2021 1:20:44 PM)

I remember watching Patton when it came out in the theater. I was about 8-9 and loved it immediately. I remember my oldest sister's boyfriend bought the soundtrack (8 track cassette) and listened to it in his car.

I watched a bunch of war films on TV growing up, all the stuff that was on. One of my favorites was "Ryan's Express" with Frank Sinatra. Another favorite that I saw when it was at the theater was 'The Cowboys' with John Wayne. The Vivaldi music really inspired me and Bruce Dern scared me. [:)] I saw 'Star Wars' when it came out also. I had just started high school (1977-78) so it was a big deal. I remember seeing 'Young Frankenstein' and 'Jaws' with the same friend (mid-seventies). I also remember seeing a couple of the 'Sinbad' movies that were really cool.

Might as well mention "The Time Tunnel" which was on TV.

I remembered a few others
A Man For All Seasons A powerful role for Paul Scofield. Quite a few big names in the cast.
A favorite quote from that movie
quote:

“For Wales? Why Richard, it profit a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. . . but for Wales!”

The Sand Pebbles.
Bullitt.
The Magnificent Seven.
The Seven Samurai.
Rashomon. I'm a fan of Kurosawa films.
The Agony And The Ecstasy.
Monty Python And The Holy Grail.

Kuokkanen -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/22/2021 7:38:24 PM)

I remember watching a number of movies, but I have trouble remembering any favourites. I was all for James Bond, Star Wars, and Tarzan when those aired, but I don't remember any single favourites from any of the series. Once upon a time in the West ranks high though. I don't remember when I saw it first, but I remember watching it with my father. He said the genre has staring like in the first meeting between Harmonica and Cheyenne. Eventually I recorded it (VHS) and watched repeatedly.

Starship Troopers is the first movie I remember watching in a theater like environment (library's auditorium) where I wasn't part of a school class. I was already in mid-teens and in vocational school at the time. Later I recorded it (still on VHS) and watched it repeatedly. Still best scifi war movie I know of, and I challenge you to name a better (Star Wars ones are adventure).

Rising-Sun -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/26/2021 9:11:18 AM)

Hmm good ones, hard to remember what i been into back in those days.

I did like the movie The Howling (first one) when that chick taken her cloths off, my dad put his hand over my eyes lol. We were in the theater.
Also like that Star War movie too.

And one crack me up, Monty Ponty, The Holy Grail. Something to do with the black knight getting chopped up near the bridge.

Neilster -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/26/2021 9:40:03 AM)

Star Wars blew my seven year old brain
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was huge too
The Empire Strikes Back gave us more goodness from the Star Wars universe
Firefox was exciting...secret Soviet fighters...very cool

Later, I discovered Where Eagles Dare, which I've watched dozens of times and The Blues Brothers. Same.

My original intention was 11-18. Let's say, from secondary school to the end of high school.

Remember, you are only young one but you can stay immature indefinitely . . . [:D]

ElvisJJonesRambo -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/26/2021 8:50:38 PM)

Appears there are different categories.

By Age
By Theater, at Home, on TV, by VCR, by CD Blockbuster.

Mine are a combination of all the above, from age 6 to 22. Who cares what age, I'm the same dude. Had to sneak on parents HBO to watch "10", 3-seconds of Bo Derek's cans were big deal in that era.

For some reason I was never able to wrap my head around Blue Velvet - and I love Mulholland Drive, Lost Highways and Eraserhead. For some reason, every time I try to watch BV I zone out and then stop after 20 mins.

My favorite Lynch movie is Lost Highway, but I didn't see that as a kid, and Blue Velvet did.

ElvisJJonesRambo -> RE: Your favourite movies when you were kids? (8/27/2021 9:52:16 PM)

For sure, Blue Velvet is a freak show. It's too much, for this Legend. I'm not the smartest guy, so movies like BV & Momento, I need others to watch with me, in order to explain.

Tonight's early C19 feature, is Viva Las Vegas! Always Elvis in the background, when I start my cooking.
