Hurricanes can stand up to Oscars, but not Tojos.
It looks like I lost 14 Hurricanes and he lost 11 Oscars and 2 Tojos.
============================================

I'm amazed it took until late 42 to see Tojos grinding down some Hurricanes. In mid 42 he should have the -a version which has an extended range of 8, usually enough to get into range of some Allied base with fighters and the Brits have nothing until late 43 that can stand up against Tojos. Fielding Hurricanes vs Tojos nearly feels like fielding Nates or early Oscars vs Warhawks, a lost cause.

I think there is no shock attack on atoll landings if there is no AV on one side or the other. For example, if you unloaded construction troops or an HQ only, there would be no shock attack either.

But then you can't take the base either. No assault value, no combat orders.[:D]

In the case of landing non-AV troops, that was a follow-on landing after infantry was already ashore, but had not secured the island. And I think I also saw one where the landing infantry did not SA because the Japanese had no AV.
I have no answer for the Japanese doing a SA on undefended Tarawa in the first days of the war, unless it is part of the landing bonus period code.

Are Tojos superior to the Spitfire Vs that start to show up (in Oz, at first) in 1942?

January 3, 1943

Not much, bombing of airfield and units at Ramree Island

This is an interesting tidbit of intel

3/55th Mountain Gun Regiment is loaded on a Kyushu Cargo class xAK moving to Phuket.

Not sure why he is putting that unit there, maybe he is moving all the 55th Infantry Division there?

BBfanboy -> RE: January 3, 1943 (1/4/2022 10:46:45 PM)

Probably Phuket enroute to India or Burma.

Nomad -> RE: January 4, 1943 (1/5/2022 12:14:45 AM)

January 4, 1943

I don't know BBfanboy, but I doubt it.

He is continuing to bomb my troops at Ramree Island and some in Katha.
I am moving forces to take Katha to try and find a way to get supply into
the central portion of Burma.

I landed a small force on Arorae in the Gilberts, cleaning up a bit.

Yes, they usually are. Not to talk about numbers, when the Japanese builds some 150 Tojos there are some two dozen Spitfires in late 42 per month. And the Brits don't even get them until mid 43.

Nomad -> January 5, 1943 (1/5/2022 3:00:12 PM)

January 5, 1943

He bombed troops at Katha today, no bombs fell on Ramree Island

Nothing much else. The US is building things faster and faster, still a long
way to catch up.

And I agree with caster troy, the Tojo's are a bit superior in speed and climb, the Spit Vc
is a bit better in maneuver at low altitudes, but the biggest problem is availability, I don't
get any for the Brits until 9/43 and then I get only 12 per month. The Brits never really
get enough fighters to make a real difference if Japan fields a goodly number in that area.

Nomad -> RE: January 6, 1943 (1/5/2022 7:59:56 PM)

January 6, 1943

He bombed Ramree Island, some damage. My flak destroyed 1 bomber and damaged 5 others.

Interesting, now he has a piece of that unit going to Rangoon

2/55th Mountain Gun Regiment is loaded on xAK Kurohime Maru moving to Rangoon.

I got a good adjustment, I notice that he does not seen to set his
defending unit to their base as future objective and he gets a (-) for
preparation. That unit is the one that took Katha a few months ago.

This intel is interesting, is he going to defend Rabaul now?

6/1st Air Army is loaded on a Ansyu xPB class PB moving to Rabaul.

It is still damaged, airfield 65 and port 33. I will be bombing it this turn.

when the sub isn't even showing up as heavily damaged I doubt it will sink, either due to luck with the damage die rolls or due to one of your direct hits being FOW (or both [:D])

BBfanboy -> RE: January 10, 1943 (1/7/2022 3:10:01 PM)

IME, I-boats can take up to 3 penetrating hits, but the 2 hits and 9 damaging near misses on that one should make its situation quite precarious.

Nomad -> RE: January 11, 1943 (1/7/2022 4:16:32 PM)

January 11, 1943

It did not show up on my sunk ship list, it has 3-6 days to make it to Jaluit Island, the nearest size 3 port.
We will see, I have a recon air unit at Tabiteuea and 2 SCTFs in the area. We will see what happenes.

He bombed Ramree Island, he did some damage but my engineers repaired all the damage over night and
added 7% to the next fort level. I had heavy and light AA units enter the hex so they will help limit
the damage he can do and make it a bit more expensive to bomb

Recon still shows a TK at Jaluit so I will send the B-24s again tomorrow

Time to send the B-17s to Rabaul again, it looks like the damage is being repaired, can't let the base become operational again.

Recon of Magwe is showing 157 fighters, I am sending in 25 x P-38E, 25 x P-38F, and 25 P-38G
on sweep missions to see what kind of aircraft are there and to see if I can win an air battle.
Magwe is on my list of targets for ground troops. I am still moving units and supply forward.

Interesting turn

First at Tarawa a sub is taken out

Massive explosion on SS RO-67
DE Chew is out of ASW ammo

Escort abandons search for sub

While it does not say the sub sank, three of the hits were reported as direct hits
and the last was the massive explosion, I doubt it will make it to safety
but it did show up on the sunk ship list.

And then there was Magwe

All three flights swept, but no fighters were on CAP
I wonder if he is playing some game. He probably knows
that I will usually sweep a base before sending in bombers
and I wonder if he kept them down and now expects bombers to
show up. I will send in my fighters again to see. As far as
I can tell the best aircraft he has available now is the
Ki-44c Tojo and my P-38s should be able to defeat them.
Magwe now shows 150 fighters.

I lost 23 P-38s and he is reported to have lost 16 Oscar, 5 Tojo, and 3 Nicks.

I lost 9 pilots and since we were fighting over his base, he probably lost less
I can not sustain that. I will have to wait for P-47s and hope they do better.
He was using low cap, all set to 3000 feet. Would I do better flying low, say 5000 feet?

castor troy -> RE: January 16, 1943 (1/9/2022 10:05:48 AM)

All CAP at 3000ft is an interesting setting. [&:]

I expect your P-38 pilots all to be 70/70 at least so I'm really amazed they do lose such a fight vs mostly Oscars and Nicks, which they should eat alive. Like you've said, even the Tojos are inferior to your Lightnings.

You should get Corsairs by now and due to the Brits and their crappy Hurricanes you might send two or three USMC fighter squadrons to India, at least that's what I usually do. Gives me 54 Corsairs for the theatre and that normally increases the Japanese headache a bit.

Not much

He bombed Akyab at night, no damage

He bombed my troops in the hex West of Myitkyina, a few disabled squads, nothing much

I bombed Rabaul again, I am going to rest all my B-17s there, need to reduce the aircraft fatigue.

He lost 5 bombers to flak and I lost one B-17 to ops.

First he hit Akyab with 30 Ki-49IIb Hellens

I had to disband some of my damaged ships there. Instead they
all have made it back to Calcutta. It will take a good while
for them to all repair but they are fairly safe.
