tyronec -> '41 Campaign. Tyrone (Axis) vs Gundam (Sov) (9/2/2021 3:58:55 PM)

T01.

Standard game, no TB transfers and no house rules.
AAR is running 3 turns behind, Gundam is welcome to post his thoughts.

I did a couple of temp motorisations - don’t know how things stand or if this is a bonus to Axis, have never used them before but at least it makes for a different opening.
In retrospect as I write this 3 moves later I think the game is probably better without using Motorisation. Things are volatile as they are and allowing players to turbocharge infantry units is going to give both sides chances to do some extreme moves. Anyway, that is what we agreed so will see how it plays out.

AGN. Nothing unusual, 1 division motorised to take the port and push past Riga.

AGC. Motorised one division to cover the flanks on the road up to Minsk. One corps of PG2 goes to PG3, the other two head South. Have pushed as far East as possible to make a two horned attack.

AGS. With two extra Panzer Corps do the L’Vov pocket and push East as far as possible. The pocket NE of L’Vov can probably be broken - and maybe some others. I like the L’Vov opening, it gets the Panzers down to the Black sea quicker but at a cost of letting some Soviets escape from 11th Army. Maybe keeping Southern frozen is better, most players seem to think that way.

I hate doing T1, all too easy to make a mistake somewhere and have a pocket broken and have pushed quite far so am not expecting them all to be OK.

I did my normal T1 bombing but drop tank escorts were not working so we did a restart and have only bombed within escort range. Had one unlucky combat and got some escorted Stukas shot down by I-planes which won’t have helped.

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: '41 Campaign. Tyrone (Axis) vs Gundam (Sov) (9/2/2021 4:14:00 PM)

I have subscribed to this AAR :) Looking forward to read more.

I have been singing the song on Motorization for some time. I just won't let it ruin the games that I play.

tyronec -> T02 (9/7/2021 2:41:06 PM)

T02.
North. Pockets hold. Pushing north, no opposition in sight.

Center. All pockets have held. Up to Smolensk and the river near Gomel. No battles except to clear pockets.

South. The L’Vov pocket was broken which is most annoying, I missed the gap. Surprisingly the one to the North has held. Soviets have committed a couple of Mech divisions to break the pocket so catch them.
Reseal the pocket with nothing routing out, so little harm done from last turn - just a few MPs lost by the Panzer Corps heading to Romania.
Lots of empty ground to advance into.

tyronec -> T03 (9/9/2021 5:46:44 PM)

T03.
Some lead Panzer units pocketed this turn but no attacks.

18th Army push up to the coast and take Talinn.
4 Pg assaults Smolensk.
3 Pg crosses the river and takes Gomel.
2 Pg gets up to the river below Kiev.
1 Pg approaches Odessa.
No sign of a Soviet defensive front line yet.

RedJohn -> RE: T03 (9/9/2021 8:28:46 PM)

Can you explain why you're splitting your mot/panzers up into regiments and pushing them so deep in snakey lines?

I'd have thought it would just lead to encircled units that although will probably be rescued next turn, could also just as well be routed very easily if not in defensive terrain. Particularly the encircling though, can't any old soviet unit just ZOC basically all the hexes taken without putting it at risk for encirclement?

[&o]

tyronec -> RE: T03 (9/9/2021 9:18:18 PM)

It is to flip hexes so the infantry can advance further next turn.
Yes, the Soviets may be able to make some sort of counter but only at a price.
Next turn the Soviets cut off a couple of regiments in the Baltics, costs them 4 units pocketed.
This game is all about giving your opponents difficult choices and then taking advantage, if you play in a totally controlled and straightforward way then it is obvious what they have to do to counter.

RedJohn -> RE: T03 (9/9/2021 10:02:00 PM)

I figured it was to do with movement, and that's fair enough. I'd have just thought it'd be simple enough for a Soviet armored/cavalry to move up and down away from your ZOC to just regain the hexes. I suppose with the former they risk the very volatile TOE on the units, and the latter it relies on that unit being in position.

So yeah, difficult choices. Thanks!

cmunson -> RE: T03 (9/12/2021 3:53:53 AM)

Tyrone has not lost his touch. He humbled Russian players (including me) during testing. With Gundam pulling back aggressively we'll see if that thwarts the Germans. Tyrone is a master at German logistics and he never seems to make mistakes. He takes enormous risks but they are coldly calculated.

I wondered if Tyrone has adapted his strategy with recent changes to the game but it looks very familiar.

I will watch this with great interest. I hope Gundam will post his thoughts at some point.

Ya :) Tyronec is the man ;-)

gundam1985 -> RE: T03 (9/13/2021 8:24:19 AM)

tyronec play well as Axis, the Red Army still not ready for the hard battle.

Tyronec is pushing all dual track lines hard. You better be prepared for a heavy hit along those axis.

gundam1985 -> RE: T03 (9/13/2021 6:23:58 PM)

Actually, I'm not worried about that, he made some mistakes so that I have confidence in building a strong defense after a few turns later.

What turn are you on?

gundam1985 -> RE: T03 (9/14/2021 12:08:55 AM)

T6 now.

tyronec -> RE: T03 (9/14/2021 8:53:42 AM)

T04.

Baltics. Pocket a few stragglers and push on towards Pskov.
Pg4. Advance past Smolensk.
Pg3. Push down towards Kiev. Make an open pocket of a few units.
Pg2. Tried to cross the river and failed. Next turn the infantry are up.
PG1. Take Odessa, no garrison.
The only visible Soviet strength is around Kiev.

I have made mistakes, but what mistakes do you mean ?

I bet he says, "Playing Germany" ;-P

Sorry couldn't help myself.

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: T03 (9/14/2021 3:41:15 PM)

The mass of Soviets below Gomel looks like some nice POW's coming up since the Rail has already been cut.

jubjub -> RE: T03 (9/14/2021 4:02:45 PM)

My god, all those regiments left on the front [X(]. I wish HYLA would try that sometime. I think it's a big boon for the soviets to play at least a little aggressively to keep the germans honest. Most people can't cope with the pressure and have to play extremely cautious or else they get tons of retreats, opened pockets etc. I'm sure Tyronec can adapt, but it would help to stop him from being so greedy.

AlbertN -> RE: T03 (9/14/2021 4:05:03 PM)

Yes if I'd do that in most of my games I'd have gotten regiments retreated and routed easily.

Gundam did that to me a few times tbh!

Sorry Jubjub, I tailor my games to my opponents. If you look at my other AAR's I use regiments a great deal depending who I play and their play style ;-). Tyronec is playing someone he can get away putting out regiments. Tyronec is also playing the "penile implant" offense technique. Meaning he makes an intrusion into Soviet territory in a straight line for follow up infantry movement. Gundam has yet to cut off the penile injection as of yet & will continue to get "F'd", if you will, until he does.

DesertedFox -> RE: T03 (9/15/2021 3:55:16 AM)

Sorry, wrong thread. Moved.

gundam1985 -> RE: T03 (9/15/2021 5:03:56 AM)

I think it's not necessary to transport unit by rail in Russia, it can save CPP and fuel but take up too much railway capacity.

tyronec -> T05 (9/22/2021 9:10:44 AM)

T05.

Baltics. Pocket holds, clear it out. Take Pskov.
Pg4. Pocket a couple of divisions, 3 hexes forwards.
Pg3. Seal the pocket from last turn, there is not much in it so maybe not worth the effort.
Push down towards Kiev.
Pg2. Cross the river and go north to link up with Pg3. Should seal the pocket next turn, expect the Soviets will run however have cut the rail lines out.
Pg1. Take Nikolaev. Looks like they intend to defend the Dnepr.

Yup, I was right. Soviets stayed and suffer the consequences. Easy pocket with lots of units.

tyronec -> T06 (9/25/2021 6:06:28 AM)

T06.
Baltics. Pushing northwards from Pskov.
Pg4. Grind a couple of hexes forwards. More infantry arriving this turn.
Pg3. Seal off the Kiev pocket, maybe 20 divisions, and split it in two in case it gets broken.
Pg2. Help Pg3 and continue East.
Pg1. Cross the Dnepr at Kherson and threaten crossings further North.

tyronec -> T07 (9/26/2021 10:02:49 AM)

T07.
Soviets did a lot GA against troops last turn, none of the fighters I had in place responded.
I think there something not working here and have asked Gundam to stop doing GA for the time being.
Note - this AAR is running three turns behind.

Baltics. Continue with low level attacks.
Pg4. Make a pocket but no progress towards Moscow after one critical attack failed. Things really slowing down in the face of strong opposition.
Pg3. One part of the pocket from last turn held, so clear that and reseal the other half. Made an attempt to form a new pocket further East but it was clearly not going to happen so set up again for next turn.
Pg2. Up to D’town.
Pg1. Soviets retreated, am up to the Crimea ready to attack next turn.

gundam1985 -> RE: T07 (9/27/2021 6:55:49 AM)

Joel Billings didn't solve the problem, I resume bombing after 1 turn, just chose the unit that far away from their airfield.

tyronec -> T08 (9/27/2021 8:12:31 PM)

T08.
Gundam agreed to discontinue GA for one turn.

Both pockets from last turn held.
Baltics. Slow advance.
Pg4. Clear the pocket and advance a little.
Pg3. Pushing up behind Bryansk. Next target is Orel.
Pg2. Cross the river below D’town. He will have to run or be pocketed next turn.
Pg1. Into the Crimea and pocket a few units.
Good losses this turn thanks to the two pockets.
