Production

I have no doubt that I am out producing the Axis. But I am not sure if it will be enough to conquer both Germany and Italy in only 2 years; especially if my next invasion is rebuffed.

The Russians continue to lose 2 MS per turn even though no raiders (including no air units raiding).

Deployment Queues. I probably should be building some Russian units. All my production over the last several turns has been spent on upgrading to 45 tech and rebuilding the Russian Air Force.

MAY 5, 1944

After all my whining about how poorly the Allies are doing and how strong the Axis are, the Allies have a pretty start to the Summer 44 Campaign.

On the Axis turn there was no U-Boat raiding, but the Germans did launch attacks in NW Europe retreating 3 infantry corps and inflicting 29 hits while taking 21.

The Allies started off by launching an Invasion in Southern France using 1 British Armour, 4 British Large Corps and 3 para Corps (1 British and 2 American). The Armour is landed first on the beach adjacent to both ports. My hope was to capture Marseilles. But it was garrisoned by a large German Corps (strength 15), while the smaller port was guarded by a small corps. Also Marseilles was protected by AA and I could use all 3 paras to attack the smaller port. Using fresh fleets to provide shore bombardment (which is why I didn't use any shore bombardment in Italy the last few turns) the Allies were able to obtain 5-1 odds and retreat the German Corps as indicated. The German corps was then attacked by an invading corps and shattered. The Allied paratroopers than moved as indicated and further units were landed. it will be interesting to see if the Germans evacuate Marseilles or make me fight for it.

The Axis left a small port in the Bay of Biscay open. I am not sure if this was planned or a mistake, but either way I invade there as well.

Meanwhile to the NE I launch the American counterattack. First I retreat a German infantry corps at high cost.

In Russia I launch offensives between Kalinin and Moscow and in the South. The Northern attacks gain me very little, but I do overrun an Armour (after 9 attacks).

In the South I retreat one defending German Infantry and cross the Dnepyr. I then Attack a second German infantry and have the most savage battle (in terms of losses) I think I have ever experienced. After retreating this infantry (which took a few more attacks) I then attacked the Mechanized circled in red.

The Mechanized put up stubborn resistance, but was eventually overrun. This encouraged me to drop a couple partroopers and I ended up with some isolated Axis units and a bit of a breakthrough.

Just so you know that not everything went my way, my two units circled in red made a couple attacks on the indicated German unit at 1-1. I was hoping to do enough damage that I could then finish the German off with some armour and mechanized and maybe breakthrough. But the losses were something like 17-1 in the German's favour.

I am hoping Stjeand will have a difficult time figuring out where to rail units too. Plug this hole or contain the Southern France invasion, or a bit of both.

I don't think Germany can sustain this level of losses. But I still have a long way to go in just 15 months.

I think you'll win it. Lots of static German units on the east front that won't be able to retreat.

If it was 43 I would agree. But I believe the last turn I will get before the game ends is the last week of July 1945. Is that correct? If so, I really don't have very many clear weather turns left. A lot may depend on the weather in march and April 45. tense game anyway.

MAY 19, 1944

I was 90% of the way finished my turn when a brief power outage caused me to lose my turn. Too bad, because I was doing better the first time than I ended dup doing the second time.

On the Western Front the Axis make no attempt to contain the landings near Marseilles and Bordeaux and even pull out of the Channel ports. I try and fail to destroy a German Infantry Corps (I did the first time) and otherwise just advance with my units.

In Russia I overrun an panzer after 5 Attacks which cost me 28 casualties.

I also overrun a Mechanized after 7 attacks and 15 casualties. In my first attempt I also destroyed another panzer, but this time it made its "saving throw' and retreated.

The Axis performed a lot of air strikes on their turn; but they suffered more step losses than me.

With help of shore bombardment I capture a hex in the Heel of Italy with a lucky 1-1 Attack.
