laagamer -> New Player - Best way to track hours (9/13/2021 4:55:54 PM)

Hello all!

First off, new player here. Complete neophyte to war games, 200 hours in Shadow Empire not withstanding. Decided to take the plunge last night. Any advice would be appreciated.

But, seeing as this game isn't on Steam, what's the best way to go about tracking hours played? Do any of you do that?

Thanks!

Write down the time you start. Write down the time you stop.

Use GOG Galaxy. You can add games that aren't offered on GoG and it will track your hours. You just work through a couple steps and link the executable to it from the folder where your game is installed. You'll even get breakdowns for weekly, monthly, and yearly gameplay time. I've added most all my Matrix/Slitherine games that I play to it and I really like the functionality.

I just have to ask, why track hours played?

I can't speak for the OP, but I guess I just kind of like to know at a glance how much time I've invested in something. Weird quirk I guess. I've kept track of it for model building, drive times with trips, etc. I'm going blame it on growing up loving sports statistics, haha.

For example, here's my page for WitE2 from GoG Galaxy. It just scratches an itch I have for whatever reason.

I would be scared by how many hours I have put into this game series over the past years.

Yeah, I suppose that could be a double edged sword, haha.

Wow, you are picking the second most complex wargame to start wargaming. Given the greater detail I would only rank War in the Pacific more complex. With that said, in my 44 years of wargaming I would rank this at the top.

This game will take you quite a long time to learn. IMHO a good way for a first time wargamer to start is to do the following:

1. Read the one page guides in the manual.
2. Play the intro scenario as German. Before you start it read sections 21, 22 & 23 of the manual and/or watch (You Tube) Strategy Gaming Dojo's first 6 episodes of his tutorial. When you play the scenario turn on the AI Air and AI Logistics assist. It is best to master the ground movement and combat before trying to understand all the depth of the logistics and the Air. Don't feel like you must master the game while playing teh intro scenario. You don't even need to finish one. Just get to the point where you are comfortable with attacking and moving. Once you are at that point go to 4.
3. Play the Campaign scenario as German. Play it on normal settings with both fog of war options on. Don't worry about "winning". Just play on the normal settings. Also for your first campaign stick with keeping teh AI Air & Logistics on. If you truly think you understand the ground aspects enough then go ahead and start to learn the logistics part of the game. Then in time learn the air aspect and take that over from the computer as well.

It will take you some time to learn this game not alone master it. So, as you start do not get caught up on winning. It is about learning. There are two other You Tube streamers that play the game they are XTRG and Night Phoenix. They may have tutorials too.

Note that I suggest you play as German. That is because the AI is better at defending then attacking. With that said, playing as the Soviets is great fun too but I still suggest playing the German side first. Enjoy!
