Jorge_Stanbury -> How does auto engage targets deal with straight/ pattern torpedoes (9/15/2021 3:12:13 AM)

As per the subject; how does the auto engage target works with early technology torpedoes; straight runners like the Mk14 or pattern runners like the Type 53-57 ?

same goes for AI controlled submarines (as they can't manually aim)

would it launch a "solve" trying to predict where the target will be taking into consideration course, speed, range, and bearing or will it simply aim to the current bearing of the target? (and miss)

also, will more than one torpedo "spread" the salvo? or would all hit the same place

I haven't had cause to use straight-runners in CMO too often, but on the few occasions I have used them they appear to work as expected. As far as I can tell they work the same way auto-TDC does in the Silent Hunter series; they will fire on a trajectory that will intercept the target on its current course and speed. Obviously if the target subsequently changes course and speed the torpedoes will probably miss unless the torpedo was fired from point blank range. I normally use manual allocations, but the result would be the same with auto-engage. In both the cases the unit AI is still doing the aiming; the only difference is who decided which weapons to fire and how many.

As for torpedo salvoes, I don't believe that is explicitly modelled in CMO. However, as torpedoes will still undergo a weapon hit calculation roll if they intercept the target, firing more torpedoes will obviously improve the chances that a hit will be rolled.

I am working on a Cold war era scenario with AI controlled Egyptian "Whiskey-class" and Turkish "Guppy I" submarines trying to ambush a convoy; for the Whiskeys, the only torpedoes available are pattern-runners, so regrettably I can't just reload them with homing torpedoes (like I already did with the Guppies, they were reloaded with NT-37Cs)

So the problem is that I am struggling to have the AI controlled -straight or pattern runners hit "test targets", I have tried changing crew proficiency to veteran, setting the salvo to 4 torpedoes and setting weapon's launch distance to the minimum, which is 2 nm (this is still long range for an old torpedo)

Is it possible to adjust the pattern in a pattern-run torpedo? I haven't figure it out yet how to do so,

maybe I will try setting weapons doctrine to only shoot them at slow/ non maneuverable targets

I think I got it: the trick is to set the mission to attack at very short range and avoid aiming at escorts; then the straight-run torpedoes will have a good chance to hit (big slow targets -- no luck against a frigate).

Were pattern-running torpedoes implemented in game? I believe the answer is no; 53-57s are behaving like straight-runners

So, I guess the problem you have experienced is the straight run torp failed to hit the target? Or it "hit" target but failed the final weapon calculation check? If my memory is correct those straight run Torp has a very low PoH in the range of 30%-40%.

issue was "missing" the target = failure to hit;
not a "dud" = failure to detonate

by mid 40s, all torpedoes in production were very reliable and "duds" no longer an issue

I think what Tcao was asking was were the torpedoes "missing" in the weapon endgame calculation (i.e the engine gave an adjusted pH of say, 32 and RNG rolled a 40 causing the weapon to miss) or were they "missing" in the sense that they never got close enough to the target to trigger a weapon endgame calculation in the first place?

no idea, I will check next time I run it

but I have been running tests and against slow merchants, straight runner Type 53-57 is well capable of hitting/ sinking them as long as they are launched at short range
