apd1004 -> Air Group information question (9/22/2021 9:38:28 AM)

Done some searching about this but not finding what I'm looking for and some of what I do find doesn't make sense. The manual and addendum aren't helping much either.

In the Air Groups display window (either by pulling up groups at a base or the all air groups window - info is the same), when I mouse over an individual air group, some info comes up that I can't figure out what it means.

Examples -

55th PG/37th PS [S]# - what is the "[S]" for? The only thing I could find is "Static" but that doesn't seem to make sense for an air group. When I mouseover the same group, the info window that pops up has a (D) next to the [S]. What is the (D)? I thought it might be "Disband" but it says "Withdraws in Jan 43", so which is it - "withdraw" or "disband"? If I click on the group itself, then in the group panel it says "Remove by Jan 43". The word "Remove" doesn't help clarify the situation either.

Some groups also have a (W) in their mouseover window. What is that one?

Thanks

In AE, "Static" status usually refers to the status of the unit's HQ assignment. Hence an air, or a land unit, may be "static" even though both can obviously move, because they are attached to a restricted HQ. Section 8.1.1 of the manual explains in detail the restricted concept. Some units can be reassigned from a restricted HQ to an unrestricted HQ if Political Points are paid; some can never be reassigned from a restricted HQ to an unrestricted HQ.

As to "disband", in the game terminology it is often used interchangeably with "withdraw". Any unit which has a withdrawal date, needs to be removed from play by that date else Political Points are charged. For land units, the task is made easy for the player as the unit is automatically removed, but for air units the player must select the "withdraw" button and if that isn't available, the alternative is the "disband" button.

Check the group screen to get a more precise description of withdraw dates, HQ status etc.

Sometimes the mouse over gives you information like an upcoming name change, so it's worth looking at both.

Thanks for the input, guys. I get most of the gameplay mechanics, I've played AE quite a bit over the years but am just recently returning to it after a long hiatus.

I've done technical writing before so I'm a little OCD when I see things on screen that aren't completely and clearly explained somewhere in the reference material/addendum/errata. As far as computer gaming in general goes, obviously this means I spend a great deal of time in OCD mode. [:(]

Generally the AE manual does a decent job of explaining things, it's just some of these little things that are hard to track down that drives me nuts. Trying to search a forum that has over a decade's worth of posts in it is often times not very productive either.

Well, there is a thread about searching the forum and it should show up within the last 5 or so pages. It is easier to do it the way that it is suggested in the thread.

Don't forget that there were changes made in the updates and you should also look for the list there as well.

You are in the same boat I'm in. Returning to this game from UV and WITP after ten years for me is almost like starting over. I'm also OCD when I cannot find everything perfectly in the manual or searching the decades old forums and ask lots of questions. You can go mad searching for something for hours and then ask a question here and get it answered in minutes. Then you are called lazy and stupid by one troll that lives under the bridge here. There are a lot of guys on this forum who are very nice and helpful. Just ignore those who are not. Don't be afraid to ask questions that is what the forum is for and you will always get lots of interesting discussion that benefits everyone. It is a great community.

So basically what I got out of those two links is the Matrix Forum search is broken (which I've noticed myself) and only Alfred knows how to use it so just use Google which is what I already do [:D] Some good google search tips though!
