The forum upgrade should resolve all of that.

I'm a bit scared about the upgrade, I really like the format of the forum as it currently is. I have no doubt that his old age may be problematic on a practical level, but still... I hope there are not very drastic changes.

I hope that it is probably more of a software upgrade since the software is so old. I also hope that older threads and information are not lost.

Erik Rutins -> RE: This Forum (9/30/2021 2:22:00 PM)

It will look a bit different, function better and with fewer issues and all old threads and content should be maintained.

While a lot of discussions have moved to social media, personally I still prefer forums both in terms of the format being better suited to long-form writing and also the easy archiving and searching of information for future reading, not to mention the fact that you see everything, not just what your "feed" thinks you should. Hence, we're in the midst of a huge forum upgrade to make sure it's around for many years to come.

The various issues with time-outs, lag and logins have mainly been due to the growing distance in age between the forum and the rest of our site. The forum upgrade should resolve all of that.

Regards,

- Erik

Thank Erik for the update!

Some of us don't do social media, it's great that this forum will be around at least (till I die.)

Only half joking[:'(]

You all are fantastic at Matrix Games!

I thought forum was for chatting and a blog was for reading?

Kinda makes sense what you are saying, never thought of it that way. The only blog I go to is this one by Total War: https://www.totalwar.com/blog/ in the hope they signal development of a game I'd like, it's easier than trying to enter the TW forum (rarely go there). The last time buying a TW game was in 2009 Napoleon Total War (NTW) and before that Empire (ETW) surprisingly I hope that TW does a CW, WWI, or some other forgotten conflict instead of the ___ ___ __ they do now. Other than that no other blogs. Asked for blog suggestions, so far none have come forth. Besides that, like coming here to chat and read others' material and comments, news of the day and try to figure out what makes someone tick, or have commonality with.

Well there is my review blog https://www.awargamersneedfulthings.co.uk/

Lapento ("İnebahtı" in Ottoman Turks language)
During my AGEod beta testing in Wars of Sucession I look forward to Ottoman Privateers but unfortunately couldn't find antyhing until Turkish historian Emrah Sefa Gürkan write a book about about "Pirates for the Sultan: Holy War, Booty and Slavery in the Ottoman Mediterranean, 1500 – 1700, İstanbul: Kronik, 2018" It is good book to read about life of the sailors and their multicultural life as they were mercenaries not The Janissaries deployed by Sultan. Italian, Spanish and Bâb-ı Âli (Constantinople) archieves are used.

Ya know for awhile there between 10/1/2021 and 10/4/21 the discussion thread "Regarding the Derby House Principles Announcement" got a lot of this forum's attention as evidenced by the number of members who followed the discussion, as well as those who participated in the discussion (the forum was most definitely alive). As a result felt this forum should have an off-topic thread, but also at the same time have to wonder how it would be handled and have doubts as to would it be a good idea to have an off topic thread due to mine or others' ids (always liked the movie Forbidden Planet circa 1957 as an example). Like many, visit this forum every day.

I put two different points together, I guess. What I was saying is all improvements that are planned be it an improved search, access to threads, consolidation, and whatever else makes navigating here better I'm very much glad for the planned upgrade. When I spoke of recent developments concerning Family friendly discussion and implementation that's where uncertainty and loss of enthusiasm took over. Participation? I have a thread I started. its gone on for a while. But is it family friendly? Who will find it objectionable and lodge a complaint? So I questioned myself, do i share anymore? Risk bringing it up to the top of General Discussion area. Squash. I can empathize with Warspite1

76819 Registered users have made 4 912 252 posts in 1221 forums. There are currently 406980 topics.

General discussion holds 278 764 of those posts. Or about 6% of the total. How many of that 6% are banned topics? Who knows, but I am going to guess it's a very insignificant number.

IslandInland -> RE: This Forum (10/10/2021 1:20:40 AM)

Any upgrade as regards the software that runs these forums can only be for the better.

Just one example: the search function is a joke and has been for years.

Having said that we must have a GD forum if only for all the waifs and strays. Myself included.

Just remember, be careful what you post. Your post may be deleted and/or the thread locked even if it does not violate the rules.

That was a general warning for everybody because someone might complain about something that does not violate the rules yet the post and/or thread may get locked. Even if no one complains about the thread in a post, the post may be deleted with no explanation nor warning while the thread may be locked with no explanation nor warning even if it does not violate the rules.

Just to be clear, the way moderation is supposed to work here is that posts are never deleted. A thread may be locked, but the reason for locking it should be stated. I realize that did not happen in a recent instance, but hopefully it should work this way going forward.

Listened to the song, could not make out the words, regardless the song had a nice cadence and seemed thoughtful. There was some 23,000 who liked it and for some reason 400 some odd that gave it a thumbs down, perhaps there was some meaning in the song I missed that others objected to. Many of the youtube comments were in a language other than English, although mostly positive. As far as I am concerned: There are times I choose purposely to sit back and be reflective and at moments such as those, songs such as above I would listen to.

If you mean "This Love", of course my "association" is a just wordplay on the title. Here is a version with the lyrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28sKo4Av0zI

Zap -> RE: This Forum (10/11/2021 9:17:14 PM)

It only takes one complaint, as I witnessed. Stats don't mean a thing. When GD is more likely to be targeted. Subject matter can be acceptable in most circles and then somebody has a complaint. For example: Families watch more sex and violence through media sources in one single day. And they happily invite it into their homes, no big deal to them!
Something can be posted in GD, its content is pretty much benign. Then some "enlightened soul" happens along and find its something they should complain about 5years later. Being there is uncertainty where things and what will be acceptable or not. Simply saying, the best as I see it, is not to share any more in my ongoing post I see how it could be targeted. Also, makes me gun-shy as to post any new threads here.

I should have clarified that bot posts _are_ deleted, but real forum user posts/threads if they are against our rules should only ever be locked.

Your second paragraph is what caught my attention. Have seen where a perfectly legit thread got derailed (locked) by a member(s) who had no concern to those who contributed before them about the thread subject matter. As far as I am concerned: It's OK to have some lateral movement in a thread posting, such as humor, fact checking, brain fart, whatever as long as it's not going to be a totally out of order distraction such as personal attacks that are separate from the OP's thread. Hey, I'm not saying I'm some angel, but some are really out there, that don't cool it. Unfortunately when some of these blitzes go on, the thread get's shut down. It's at that point I have an issue with Matrix for it's the sum total of contributing posts are punished for the actions of a rabid lone wolf or two. In that case it's a darn shame. Often felt it was not a good forum policy. Sure wished that the offending party had been shut down instead of having the entire thread shut down.

I have to agree with Zap that there is a certain amount of risk when posting a thread here for there are sometimes unintended consequences that can put the OP in an awkward situation. There's alot of smart members here and for the most part helpful, sincere and have something to offer, which I think is great to see/read.
