DesertWolf101 -> RE: A War to be Won - DesertWolf101 (A) vs Wirraway_Ace (J) (11/17/2021 4:31:58 AM)

January 16-17, 1942

The KB circles back and heads towards the Australian coast. Interesting, more industry bombing?

Wirraway's submarines were also quite active on the 17th, sinking three cargo ships around the map. Interestingly, they also picked up on my effort to reinforce Midway. I need to be careful to guard against a sudden lunge by his cruisers against one of these reinforcement packages.

China continues to be a very interesting theater. My defensive position in the mountains to the east of Sian hung by a thread over the past several turns against repeated Japanese shock attacks and heavy air bombing. My exhausted troops barely managed to avoid being overrun but amazingly survived long enough to be reinforced on the next turn by two additional fresh corps coming across the mountain from Tsiatso. This changes everything, at least for the short term. I will rush additional forces to the position and hopefully I can keep grinding the Japanese assaults down while I still have supply, even with their heavy tank presence.

I also am going to see if a ruse will work the following turn. I moved in all the Chinese bombers into Chunking and kept them visible there and sitting ducks for three full turns. The plan was to convince Wirraway that they are there to stay while his bombers were busy supporting his ground push near Sian. If I guessed correctly and the weather holds, I think he will now hit Chunking. I therefore pulled out the bombers and replaced them with every fighter airframe I can muster in the theater. Let's hope the Japanese fall for the trap and come knocking.

Unfortunately, no Japanese strike on Chungking and the ruse is uncovered. None of the Japanese Sallies, Oscars, or Zeros in China flew missions this turn so I suspect the pretty dismal weather may have been the culprit.

The KB once again pulls back to the north. Will soon have to rely more on SIGINT to figure out where it is going.

I am almost finished with unloading on Midway and am working on beefing up other islands across the Pacific. Itching to go on the a raid against the Japanese again but trying to be patient and not do something too rash.

The Japanese shock attack and take Manila. I intentionally left a sizable bulk of second-line Filipino troops in the city in the hopes that the street fighting will damage the city's installations, and frankly to get rid of some of the extra mouths that will only eat away at my supply during the upcoming Clark siege where I intend to last as long as possible. All the armor, artillery, and best American and Filipino troops have pulled back into Clark/Bataan. If Wirraway does decide to take the pocket by storm, I have a strong enough force to fight it out within the stacking limits of the hex.

Before the ground battle, a dozen Japanese Sonia and Lily bombers were ambushed and shot down by the remaining fighters in Luzon.

China

Despite our best efforts, Wirraway and I continue to fail to find each other in the air over China. This past turn is a great example of this - I moved my fighter force to Sian to CAP my troops in the area only to have Wirraway sweep and bomb Sian itself instead, with the end result that none of us did any damage to each other. The comedy over China continues!

Wirraway's 12 tank regiments assigned to the Japanese Sian offensive are continuing their relentless attacks in search of a breakthrough. I continue to hold the line through timely rotation of forces but I have no illusions that the Japanese will eventually push their way through. It's all a question of buying time though to further prepare the rest of my defenses. Once the Burma road closes though I will really start to hurt for supply.

South Pacific

The KB is still hanging around New Caledonia burning fuel. I think it is there to cover the arrival of further Japanese reinforcements to seize the island.

Indian Ocean

One of my anti-raider task forces encounters two fat Japanese AMCs astride my lines of communication to Australia near the edge of the map and quickly sinks both of them.

January 23-25, 1942

When playing as the Japanese the month of January always seems to zip by so fast - not so much as the Allies!

China

The stalemate continues in China but as usual my defense in front of Sian continues to hang by a thread. It's all a fine balancing act between pulling out exhausted formations and sending new ones into the meatgrinder to face the massed Japanese tanks.

South Pacific

New Caledonia finally falls to the Japanese. The KB has been hanging around in these waters for a long time now. Unfortunately my carriers are busy undergoing repairs after their daring and successful raid against the Home Islands so I couldn't take advantage. Now what will the KB do?

SRA

After the costly lesson the Japanese received with the Palembang op, Wirraway is being very cautious about invading or taking any bases with oil. He is instead moving to clean up the DEI and leaving most of the resource rich areas like Balikpapan, Miri, and Tarakan to the end. Pretty smart move considering the circumstances of our game. Batavia fell on the 25th to the Japanese, and Soerabaja will soon be besieged and taken as well. Nevertheless, I still intend to maintain a presence on Java for a long time to come.

A nice force of Japanese warships stumbled on a gift basket of eggs off the coast of Java!

Nice minefield results at Merak! An experienced IJ player would always expect mines there and bring DMS and AMcs. I think the Japanese PBs can also sweep, and he has lots of small one-pointers.

The PBs would only sweep once, usually one mine, sometimes two.

If there is minesweeper with the PB, the PBs can be put into a minesweeping taskforce. No minesweeper needs to be in it. The Ansyu PB can take a mine hit and not sink, if you own the port that PB will disband into the port for repairs. It is a slow but safer way.

I'd never use anything else than a minesweeper to sweep mines. Escorts are so valuable for the Japanese why should I risk even one in a minesweeping operation it's not meant to execute?[:(] PB do sweep mines, the same way a BB would do, they hit them.

They will sweep them and not necessarily hit them. You can use them alone or with existing minesweepers. They will do it slower but are less vulnerable. The AMc might even work when disbanded in port but it might also get sunk.

Early on, there may be excess to your immediate needs PBs and this is one way to use them until they escort convoys back to the Home Islands. Also, don't the IJN DMS ships convert to Escorts in many cases?

They "sweep" them like DDs do, must be like shooting at them but if they don't hit mines directly with the ship the sweep minimal numbers. A single minesweeper is 100 times more effectiv than a PB. Yeah, DMS usually convert into E class ships, but not comparable to the super Es of late war.

Thanks. Wirraway did have DMSs roving around the area but for some reason the minefield was not detected. Tbh I think I got a bit lucky on this one but I will take it.

January 26-28, 1942

Still continuing to hold the line east of Sian! I tried to contest the airspace over the frontline on the 27th with rather mixed results. The tanks are of course an issue but I think I can hold against them as long as I have supply. The sheer mass of Japanese air support is also a significant concern, so I am trying various tricks and tactics to keep the Japanese bombers as distracted as possible in the theater.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: A War to be Won - DesertWolf101 (A) vs Wirraway_Ace (J) (12/1/2021 2:49:47 AM)

On the 28th I sent a four destroyer squadron down the Malacca Straits and sank a couple of Japanese Ansyu cargo ships and their CM escort. There are plenty of Japanese warships around though so it will be tricky next turn as I try to exit the hotzone.

I finally challenged the KB's strikes against Australia's industry. I think Wirraway got lulled into a false sense of security. This made him predictable enough for me to conclude that Brisbane was going to be his next target. I moved in 150 P-40Es to the city and got some very good results. I think it would have been even better had I not previously overlooked to upgrade the bases sound detectors to radar devices.

How much supplies do you have in China in total? Do you use tracker? If the Burma road is open and you put loads of supplies into Rangoon it will flow in the tens of thousands into China as the base requirements will pull it over the secondary road into Kunming, Kweiyang and then further on. Supply is the key in China and supply is coming from Burma.

Even though not crippling it's going to hurt, well done. One of the reasons I usually don't use KB or even Allied carriers (until very late war) to attack land targets as the carriers just can't fight massed LBA (defensively yes but hardly offensively). One can quickly lose over a hundred aircraft just to bomb a 1 or 2 pt freighter that is unloading supplies somewhere.

+1

Ramree Island will also work, especially if you don't have Rangoon. Even small xAKls unloading there with no base demand can put supplies into Burma and thence China. If he is looking at Rangoon with his air units, he may not be looking at Ramree Island.

Nah lads, this is a high end game and it is almost February 1942. Wirraway as he should has built up the airfields in northern Thailand and he has the air power advantage at this stage of the game to prevent supply convoys from coming in. I have thankfully kept the Burma road open but I suspect the Japanese will soon move into Burma in force.

I have never used tracker. I recognize the advantages it can offer but I just never got around to using it or any other tools for that matter.

January 29 - February 1, 1942

On the 29th of January three of the U.S. destroyers that were pulling back from their raid into the Stait of Malacca were hard hit by Japanese land based dive and torpedo bombers and sent down to the bottom.

In China the pressure is on! Fighting under the shade of a huge number of Japanese bombers that blotted the sun, imperial forces pushed back the Chinese 5th War Area army southeast of Sian. I am scrambling to send forces to block the gap before the dreaded Japanese tanks breakthrough deep behind my lines.

DesertWolf101 -> RE: A War to be Won - DesertWolf101 (A) vs Wirraway_Ace (J) (12/6/2021 11:42:27 PM)

I have some time on my hands so I am doing a quick look at where Wirraway and I are in the game. In terms of China where most of the action is right now, the Japanese as previously mentioned have made a significant breach on the Sian front and it is a race to see if I can plug the gap. Two of my infantry Corps did not retreat but they probably will this turn. The extra turn they get me could be critical. Given the overwhelming imperial focus on Sian it was always a matter of time till the Japanese breakthrough but I am intent on delaying as much as possible. The only other sector in China with any sort of battle right now is the Wenchow siege. Overall, Wirraway has proven to be a very capable but overly cautious adversary in China. Much like Montgomery in the North African campaign, he favors the massing of overwhelming tank, artillery, and air support before attacking. Wenchow for example is being consistently pummeled by battleships, artillery, and air attack but has yet to see a single infantry attack.

I have attempted to leverage the delay as much as possible by gearing up the Chinese for war. The bulk of my Chinese troops are not engaged, and numerous Corps now are at 40 experience and 70-80 morale. A large number of them have also fully healed their disabled squads. In the Changsha front as a result I now have 5,775 AV while in the Changteh-Ichang line there is a further 4,882 AV. Normally I would have leveraged the situation to advance out with such forces to deliver a significant blow, but I am dissuaded by the issue of stacking limits that we have in this game and the overwhelming number of Japanese bombers currently present in the theater. I have a couple of ideas I am mulling over...

DesertWolf101 -> RE: A War to be Won - DesertWolf101 (A) vs Wirraway_Ace (J) (12/6/2021 11:54:21 PM)

I'm quite pleased with how the air war is progressing. Once again Wirraway is one of the best air commanders I have faced thus far which means I have to be on point with my planning. Still, there are some chinks in the enemy's armor that I can exploit. The last turn I finally managed to catch up and draw level in terms of overall air losses. I am furiously focused on training up my squadrons and will be seeking to engage him in air battles a lot more once enough pilots are combat qualified.

February 2-3, 1942

China

Astonishingly, the two severely depleted Chinese Corps that remained in the hex southeast of Sian after the rest of my stack was forced to retreat stood their ground against two follow up Japanese attacks. Wirraway was so sure he would break through, as was I frankly, that he diverted his massed air support elsewhere. I think that likely played a big role in the result. In any case, there technically is no breakthrough after all. Yes the hex itself could very well be captured by the Japanese in a further attack next turn, but the two turns I have already gained will undoubtedly ensure I will sufficiently cover the front here in the following hex up the road.

One fire put out, another emerges! Over the last two turns I have also defeated two new attacks by the Japanese 1st Army on the dirt road east of Sian, but at a heavy cost in disabled squads. The massed Japanese armor is very difficult to deal with, especially since damaged vehicles tend to be repaired very quickly relative to disabled squads. I've kept the Japanese bottled up in this hex for a couple of months now, but I don't think I can keep doing so for much longer. To that end, I have ordered all remaining Chinese forces in the Yenan blocking position to fall back on Sian, but it's an open question if they will get back in time.

February 2-3, 1942 - Continued

Submarine war

One of my Dutch subs sank a small but loaded xAK off Hokkaido. I think the ship carried a small engineer unit of some sort.

Burma

The Japanese hordes are coming by sea to land on Burma. I have been tracking the loading of his ships at Singapore over the last half a dozen turns and my subs have picked up his ships sailing north past Georgetown as well. I will not seriously contest a landing in Burma given his heavy escort and his close proximity to the built up airbases in northern Thailand. If I am wrong though and he goes for India instead, I will sail out and meet him in force. My fleet carriers are unfortunately too far away to intervene but I don't believe the KB is anywhere near either.

DEI

On the 2nd I sortied out with the light cruiser Sumatra and intercepted an enemy convoy. Unfortunately the attack was not hard pressed and I may have sunk only one or two small cargo ships. The Sumatra made it back to Soerabaja on the 3rd without incident, and will attempt to break out of the DEI next turn. I put up a small fighter screen over the port, which Wirraway swept with Zeros and Oscars. I lost 5 buffalos for 2 Zeros - a result I am perfectly happy with, especially since I lost no pilots.

Near Bandoeng a Japanese infantry regiment attacked some of my Dutch forces in the mountains and suffered more than a 100 disabled squads to zero Dutch casualties. This was a perfect opportunity for a counterattack but I unfortunately forgot to order one of my armored regiments to join in on the riposte. As a result, I missed the necessary 2 to 1 ratio by a small margin (111 to 64). I may try again with all regiments next turn since I only lost 34 disabled squads to his 9 in my counterattack.

The Japanese landed on Port Blair.

In Java the second attack went in with all forces participating and threw back the Japanese regiment. Just a minor victory to be sure, but it's a nice morale boost for the ultimately doomed Dutch defenders.

China

The Sian front is now well and truly bending. I can continue to hold the Japanese push up the main road from Nanyang from my new position just southeast of Sian but the other Japanese thrust on the dirt road to Sian's east is about to breakthrough. I have therefore ordered a general retreat to new defensive positions northwest of Sian. I will leave a garrison at Sian but I am undecided on how many forces to leave behind. I do need to slow Wirraway down however while I reach my new positions.

I also attempted to extricate the two gallant Chinese Corps that stood firm against the Japanese war machine for so long but unfortunately the enemy attacked the turn before they would have made it back to friendly lines. [:(]

Burma/India?

The Japanese are definitely coming. I still think they are coming for Burma but I am positioning myself accordingly in case I am wrong and this is a push for India. One of my subs sank a small Japanese cargo ship in the strait of Malacca.

New Guinea

The Japanese landed an SNLF unit at Port Moresby this turn to join up with the 4th division that came over the Owen Stanley range. I can easily hold on against these two units but I see more forces coming across the mountains....

With the Japanese distracted with the effort to seize Port Moresby, I have decided to strongly defend Fiji. Strong Allied forces have begun landing there this turn, and I should have a division, a brigade, and a tank battalion there in less than a month.

Speaking of Port Moresby, the Allied artillery is proving its worth in daily bombardments.

Burma

I am increasingly convinced Wirraway is about to invade Burma. I don't think he would be foolish enough to go directly for India without the KB present and especially with my CVs unaccounted for. The obvious landing zone is Pegu and I have been planning a counter on that basis.

With my CVs not in the theater and with what I assume must be a very substantial Imperial air presence in Thailand, I will not risk a naval clash. I am doing my utmost however to convince him that is my intention by hanging my task forces within occasional sight of his naval search without being too obvious about it. This is both to delay his approach as much as possible (every day the Burma road is open is critical), and to convince him of the need to devote his bombers and fighter escorts to the naval strike mission.

Instead, I plan on striking his convoys with dive, torpedo, and level bombers from bases in Burma and India. It's been difficult to organize this effort given supply flow issues and his pervasive recon, but I think I am finally in position. Based on my naval search and submarine screen, his convoys have have hugged the coast northwards and have just departed Victoria Point. I have grounded my naval search over the last turn to suggest to Wirraway that I am unaware of his imminent approach, but if my calculations are correct he should be landing either this coming turn or the next. I am hoping it is this coming turn as I have sent forward 90 Hurricanes to cover the approach of my bombers. We shall see.

Burma

Lo and behold the enemy shows up at Pegu as expected! Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, with heavy rain in the morning and severe storms in the afternoon. Nevertheless, the Allied bombers, well covered by RAF Hurricanes, do a creditable job at going after the enemy invasion convoys. Wirraway covered his transports with a considerable number of fighters, including the elite Tainan group with Zeros, but today they came up short against my pilots. At the end of the day, the Japanese land three divisions + of troops (now weakened) at Pegu. Air combat results for the day displayed at the bottom.
