HighwayStar -> End Game Questions (10/1/2021 12:41:12 AM)

I didn't get any response in the War in the Pacific The Struggle Against Japan forum, so I will try here since the same problems I experienced years ago there are the same as here:

Playing Allied side, late in the war (44-45). Major oil centers have been recaptured in late 1943, i.e. Dutch East Indies, Miri, etc. Most of mainland Asia, including Korea, in Allied hands, with major airbases (well stocked with fuel, supplies, and aircraft maintenance support) established for B-29 raids. Japan's merchant fleet has been crippled. All of Japan's aircraft carriers and battleships have been sunk. The first problem is launching B-29 night raids on Japanese cities. Raids rarely exceed three ship formations, thus damage is minimal. This is when multiple squadrons at each base are targeting the same city and resource. When I switch to daylight raids, the bombers are met with massive amounts of defensive fighter formations. In the actual war, Japan was only able to put up token defense at this timeframe due to fuel shortages and I have read accounts of Japan resorting to using pine tree sap to refine into aviation fuel, which was a very poor substitute. Is this a flaw in the game? This has happened on multiple games. What have you experienced? [&:]

So, are you playing WITP? It's been a while for me.

If it's WITP-AE, the scenario you are playing would be helpful information. Also, whether against the AI or a person.

Cheers,
CB

Yes, the Japanese did use turpentine.

I first encountered this while playing WITP many years ago. When WITP-AE came out, I switched over to it but I encountered the same problem. The scenario I am playing is WITP: The Full Campaign against the AI. Twentieth AF under LeMay (air 83) is at Takao with AF capacity of 9, supplies 244533, fuel 251027, aviation support at 556, 6 B-29 squadrons. XX Bomber Cmnd under Saunders (air 61) is there also. XXI Bomber Cmnd is at Shanghai under Hansel (air 65), AF capacity of 9, supplies 271321, fuel 138937, aviation support at 348, 9 B-29 squadrons. XXII Bomber Cmnd is at Shikuka under Irwin (air 32), AF capacity of 9, supplies 214438, fuel 4910, aviation support at 620, 11 B-29 squadrons.

The scenario names are somewhat confusing: I am playing WITP-AE, but the scenario name is WITP: the Full Campaign.

And your point is what?

The manual lists many other relevant factors not listed in your two posts.

As to encountering a strong computer air presence in 1945, that very much depends on how well a human player has spent the preceding years in degrading enemy air power. The difficulty level set is also quite relevant.
