Am I the only one wondering abut the PLA(AF)/PLA(N)(AF) choices of aircraft testing the ROC ADIZ? I noted several stories where MPA and AEW aircraft are part of the mix and then also Su-27s. Now to my thoughts.............. 1. If I'm the PLAAF I have a LOT of older J-6s, J-7s etc., airframes that are of marginal value, but would be great to fly a mission, say every other day per airframe, and if you had six (6) or eight (8) regiments/squadrons, challenging the ROC ADIZ say three (3) or four (4) times per day, Morning, Noon, evening and overnight challenges with enough aircraft to cause an ROC scramble for each sortie. I'm thinking then they are really doing something to stress ROC airframes, maintenance cycles and pilot fatigue, with little stress to front line units. 2. So IMHO, the mix of airframes/type currently being used kind of tells me this isn't really meant to pressure the ROC as much as it is a PR stunt to gain international media attention. 3. Of course their primary aircrews are also gaining experience as well but still... Thoughts? What am I missing here? I was *thinking* of creating a scenario with a few ROC aircraft on surge (1 or 2 F-16 squadrons) but most sustained ops and seeing how long it takes to wear down the ROC air force's response.

Those J-6 are no longer air-worthy. Some people claim they can be converted to drone. Maybe but there is no evidence of it. None. Nada J-7 were used to fly along more modern crafts in one of the flight to Taiwan's SouthWest AIDZ. But J-7 is being phased out in PLAAF. Existing J-7 units are relegated to training units or quite sectors. I think the surge of flights during Oct 2-4 was due to the presence of Carl Vinson/Reagan/QE carrier groups SE of Taiwan. With Carl Vinson+QE transiting through Bashi Strait between Taiwan and Philippines. Don't forget USS Connecticut was sailing back to Guam ON SURFACE after the collision on Oct 2.

That is speculation, not solid evidence. In theory, they could convert older planes like J-6 to UAV. However if I were them, why spending efforts to convert those questionable airworthy craft when plenty of better UAV options are available.

Metal fatigue is the dire reason. Even J-6 just get overhauled after the decommission (2006) and mothballed for 15 years, there are surely need to take weeks to inspect all the parts to ensure it still stays structural intact. J-7 maybe, but JL-9 that is still manufacturing as a trainer would be a better airframe due to the upgradability by just adjusting the current tooling. But I think the best way to make ROC military waste all the expensive missiles and AA ammunition, is to follow the Azerbaijan style of MALE and single use kamikaze drone swarms, while have them escorted by top-of-line PLAAF air units until those drones reach near the shore or the target warships. What make them more scary is the ease of mass manufacturability that basically a majority of non-military factories can be converted to build those. Not just can get into massive quantity for a short period of time, but also disperse the risk from getting the production line destroyed by counterattacks.

The idea of converting old washed up aircraft to UAVs is interesting. I was thinking some faction within the PLA might use them in a civil war. Then I thought maybe a China civil war scenario might be interesting to set up. Lots of "toys" to play with. Several/many factions could be set up. Far fetched yes, but throwing the idea out there. What happens after Xi Jinping croaks from covid? etc...

I should note that using up old aircraft as semi-UAVs worked in Nagorno-Karabakh, where the Azeris took off in An-2s, had the pilot parachute out, and then used the now-empty aircraft to great effect as SAM decoys.

J-6 and J-7 are cool, but new drones fresh out from factories that can easily slip though AAs, while providing qualitative (smarter automation) and quantitative (ease of manufacturing) advantages to crater hostile positions are cooler. Like video games, it’s all about DPS (deaths per second), so old aircraft conversions counteract the meaning to excel firepower at the shortest amount of time.
