I'm an experienced computer wargamer, but WP Pacific is virtually impenetrable. I've read the manual, and spent hours going thru the first several youtube tutorials. Any suggestions for climbing this impossible learning curve?

Play a hotseat game, or go to the 'looking for an opponent' section of this forum, and say you are a new player looking for a new player to play against.

Allies are easier than Axis UNLESS the Axis player is very aggressive.

There are useful AARs to read, the Yuejin and Eskuche ones are good. Finally the War Room has some useful information. If you have any questions then ask those as well.

I had the same problem.

The key is understanding how the supply system works. There are quite a few supply mechanisms at play here besides the overarching strategic considerations such as the Japanese need to get as much oil as possible as quickly as possible.

That is why I created this video tutorial:

It is long, but as exhaustive as I could make it.

Good luck.

Hot Seat is best. The game really shines as a sand box simulation. Once you understand the mechanics of invasion and the basics of port supply you have ascended a fair way on the learning curve. My current game in WarPlan Europe is against the ai as the Allies with the advantage bonuses to the ai cranked up and it is a challenge for my skill level. What I have found is the game requires patience in learning but it is well worth it. It is a way of life! Even after a lot of time and effort I would be dead meat against an aggressive, experienced human opponent.

Starting versus AI is a good thing. I am still doing tons of mistake during my games. Against AI, it is usually not too bad.

My feeling is, if you don't understand how the supply system works, the game is unplayable.

Thanks to all. I'm struggling with the invasion routines, trying to play the Guadalcanal scenario. I have the 4 marine regiments, embarked and escorted by DDs, at the start of the game. I've tried myriad ways of moving them to the Canal and disembarking, but I CAN"T for some reason: I can get the adjacent beach hexes to light up red, but can't find a "button" or icon to click to get the marines to disembark. What am I missing? Do I need to wait for turn 2, to get more operations? Pool the 4 DD/transport fleets to get the entire 320 landing craft?

I think that you have to right click on the lit up hex to land?

YueJin -> RE: Where do I start? (10/17/2021 8:49:02 PM)

Transported units need at least one action point available to invade an enemy controlled hex. Therefore they need to start their turn within 24 hexes of the target (34 in guadalcanal where naval units have increased movement range).

Looking at the guadalcanal scenario you can see the only hex this marine regiment can invade this turn is highlighted in red after I press the hotkey 'z'.

Obviously I don't want to invade there but the 102nd RCT at Espirito Santo is in range of all the ports in the area and I'll go ahead and drop them off at Tulagi by moving them to the beach hex and selecting the invasion hexes button then right clicking.

After moving the rest of my units, I've landed at Tulagi and Russel Island and should take them next turn, the carriers are at Ndeni to respond to a Japanese attack, 3 destroyer groups in raider mode are blockading the port at Guadalcanal and the Marine units are at Espirito Santo, Ndeni and Port Villa ready to invade the island next turn.

Hope that helps.

Nice explanation.

It also helps to have a ship with the landing party. If you look at the box "Show Invasion/Disembark Hexes"... to the far right of that box is an icon (looks a supply ship) which lights up and gives supply to the invasion unit. The cost is 2 Operational Points from the naval unit.

So normally, after I drop off a unit I will attack the defender. Ships will support with gunfire support and spend their remaining OP points. The next turn you can then resupply the ground unit with your naval unit.

Doing so, makes a huge difference in whether or not your invasion succeeds.
