The German Army used the Roman numeration as it appears in the game (XXXXVIII) ... although it is true that you are right and the correct form is XLVIII for 48.

Confirm. While it is "mathematically" correct to write XLVIII, the Wehrmacht kept using the "addition" to the Roman numbers (such as XXXXVIII or XXXX to indicatre 48 and 40 respectively).

The Romans themselves lacked orthodoxy in this matter as well. Imagine typing 8 as IIX.
