I figure you gents are about the only people I know who will appreciate this story, so here it goes. There I was a couple of days ago walking the flight line at the Seoul Air Show and I came up to a USMC AH-1Z Viper attack helo. The captain in front had "Vandegrift" on his flight suit badge, so like any decent player of this game I asked if he was at all related to a gentleman named Archer, and he answered that Marine service runs in his family and that the general was indeed his great-great grandfather. I didn't get a chance to talk much, since they were about to move his bird, but he mentioned he was based at MCAS Futenma on Okinawa.

Cheers,
CB

Cool! Would have been much better if you could have taken him for a beer and asked about family stories of Gen. Vandegrift. Always nice to get a sense of what a hero was like when he wasn't saving the world! [sm=00000436.gif]

That would have been great. I've found it's tough to meet those guys after the show even pre-Covid, as their ROKAF hosts tend to keep them busy. Anyway, I settled for a handshake and telling my Korean colleague that his great-great grandfather was a famous WWII general. Of course, she had no idea on any of it, including Guadalcanal.

Cheers,
CB
