hansondavid4 -> The problem of Strasbourg (10/28/2021 1:35:31 PM)

There is a real problem with the Germans having a 3 hex attack (one not across the rive) on Strasbourg. This basically leaves a huge hole in the Maginot Line. It can be argued that Strasbourg, being west bank of the Rhine, did not have significant in-depth defensive belts like Metz. I would counter the argument that it did have powerful fortifcations to the north and any non-river attack would have to come through those fortification. I think this would be best reflected in making it a fortified town. This would give it a level 4 entrenchment vs the 6 for open hex Maginot line. It would allow the French to move in reserve units when the Army gets to beat up and still have a level 2 entrenchment. I think it would be a reasonable solution. Without a fix, the Germans can blow through center the Maginot line in winter 39/40 and do a lot of attrition to the Allies even if they choose not to exploit the position without ever directly attacking the forts. France will be stuck trying to defend the hills behind and the the Germans can do 5 or 6 hits a turn which will soak up all the French replacements. If the UK relieves then, then the German get to grind down UK production instead... All the while you are getting some good experience as the casualties are pretty one sided due to the quality of units and generals. In my current game I killed the French army, beat another down before he retreated. Now grinding up a UK army. I have inflicted around 18 army factors of casualties taking around 5 corp, during the initial entrenchment reduction, and I think 1 or 2 air casualties. At this point, I am attritioning 3-4 strength a turn for usually no lose. Please consider making Strasbourg a fortified city or moving it south so it is a 2 hex cross river attack. This feels ridiculous.
