Defencegreece -> New Historical Scenario 1974 Cyprus Operation K: The mission that never was (10/31/2021 12:22:07 PM)

Hello all I am uploading a beta historical scenario about the cancelled Operation K to deter Attila landing forces on the island of Cyprus back in 1974

Description:

On 20 July 1974, Turkey launched an invasion on Cyprus, following the Cypriot coup d'etat on 15 July 1974.
At the same time Turkish paratroopers were dropped at various locations on the island to create diversion and all major cities were bombed by the Turkish Airforce with a mix of conventional HE Mk series bombs and Napalms.
The initial amphibious assault landed in Keryneia but met heavy resistance by dispersed elements on Greek Cypriot National Guard. For the time being they are pinned down at a very small area , unable to advance.
Despite the success to contaminate the 1st wave, National Intelligence Service (NIS) reports that a second wave is preparing to board the landing ships with additional armored detachments.
A second amphibious assault is imminent the next 24 hours. If the beachhead of the 1st wave remains intact, the combined force could easily overwhelm our Greek/Cypriot forces which are fighting without any air cover, suffering heavy losses.

Political situation in Greece remains unstable, trying to avoid any major escalation at
Eastern Thrace (Evros river) or Aegean Islands. Our NATO Allies want to prevent the South
Eastern Part of NATO been torn to pieces by internal rivarlies between Greece and Turkey.

However a long planned Operation K is active and planned ahead to repel the invaders on Cyprus soil.
An elite force of 10 F4 Phantoms armed AIM7 BVR, AIM9 WVR and Mk20 Rockeye is authorized to be used as a one time strike against the amphibious beachhead at Keryneia.
The enemy forces are located in a very narrow land passage equipped with limited AA Gun support. Turkish GBI Interceptors might engage our forces from Turkish Mainland and specifically from Attaleia or Konya AFBs.

Try to avoid any radar detection adjusting adequate plot course and flight level height.

Historical Hint: In reality the Operation K was cancelled while the F4 Phantoms were taxing off, a few minutes before take off...

Feel free to comment or suggest any improvements
I tried to be as most accurate as possible taking into account various sources like

I managed to misread the briefing and think that my mission was to attack the 2nd wave's transports before they could arrive (I think it was the line "cause maximum damage to the OPFOR naval force" that got me). I sent my falcons and freedom fighters to sacrifice themselves and distract the enemy fighters while the 2 AA armed F-4s were to locate the invasion force by radar and cue in the rest of the F-4s (who I stripped of their Sparrows to extend their range) to destroy it. Of course, I didn't find any invasion force, and after finishing off my diversion the enemy fighters went for the strike F-4s (which I managed to have hold right next to the Turkish SAG; I would say that's how they got detected despite being at minimum altitude, but the SAG is neutral to the Turkish Invasion Forces, so I'm not sure how they got detected). At this point I had the strike abort and had the AAW F-4s take out the pursuing fighters.

So the mission ended up being a failure (as a a result of my apparently terrible reading comprehension-I easily had enough time to strike the ground forces), but the eight Turkish F-5s I shot down managed to net me a positive score.

Recommendations:

-The briefing says you have 12 hours, but you only actually get eight in the scenario. I would stick with the current time, less the player get the opportunity to launch two strikes (which I assume wasn't the intention), but the briefing should be updated.
-the Turkish SAG currently comes to a complete stop after it reaches its waypoints. Perhaps extend its waypoints so it will keep moving for the duration of the scenario or assign it to a mission for the same effect

This is a fun little scenario...now that I know what I am supposed to be doing, I might have to try it again at some point.

Thanks a lot for the info
I will update it the soonest possible

Initial thoughts were also to strike the 2nd wave of landing crafts (thus the 12 hours) but historically
we miss a configuration for the F84F with a 3rd fuel tank (sacrificing 2 M117 bombs in order to make this happen
As soon as the devs include it (will open a new request to them) I will add it on the scenario as well

Good thing you have a lot of fun :) [&o][&o]

I have also left open the end scenario scoring, would like to see some AAR first

I did not do quite as well as Stww2 but generally agree with his take. Starting at noon local means that about half of your scenario time is going to be in the dark where your assets lack effectiveness. Suggest that you consider rolling back the start time an hour or two.

Scenario begins at 10:00:08 Zulu, suggest starting on the hour.
Message log is crammed full of text from the scenario development, suggest use Clear Message Log before uploading.

In the briefing you use breachhead but the correct English language terms could be beachhead or bridgehead. Offered with the understanding that your English id infinitely better than my Greek.

Interesting little scenario; quick, dirty and offering a nice low-tech but real-world situation.

Thank you Randomizer for your hints
Will include this corrections on the next version :)

Beachhead or bridgehead which one do you suggest is the most accurate one?

Bridgehead or Beachhead? Both actually work in the context of this action but typically a bridgehead is connected with an assault river crossing while a beachhead is usually in reference to an opposed, amphibious landing.
