Just got back from seeing my daughter off for 6 months sea duty. She has 16 yrs in navy at norfolk. Saw the post bout young people who play the game. How bout the old timers. I am 70 next month. Have had 3 heart attacks plus double bypass surgery. Have to watch the excitement. But cant seem to get enough of the game. Have to watch my tatics so i keep the upper hand or my heart starts to pound. Still this is the best tacticul game i have ever played. Takes me back to themud with some of my old friends. Hope i get to finish the long campaign before its too late. Great work to all at the matrix and to all the forum contibutors has helped my tatics emmensly.

Wow! I'm just a youngster, only a 51 year old whipper-snapper. Been Playing wargames since AH Tactics II and Gettysburg. BOught my first APple II Plus just to play SSI's Computer Bismarck.

Supervisor -> (7/16/2001 11:47:00 PM)

:eek: 70 and 51!!! I feel like a young pup at 42! BTW, Tactics II & Gettysburg are what I started out with too.

Bing -> (7/16/2001 11:54:00 PM)

Robot, I am catching up with you in the age bracket. I'll vote SPW@W as the best tactical computer wargame in my 40+ years gaming, that is "hands down" the best. Best operational/strategic (and no fooling, it really IS strategic) computer game: Gary Grigsbys Pacific War. Best paper tactical wargame: Larry Bond's Harpoon, it is simply great. Not coincidentally, Mr. Grigsby is involved with two of my main choices. My Dad was a China Marine, BTW. Bing

Robot, you are doing fine. I am 61 and going on 62 soon. Wild Bill I think , is just a tad older than myself, and , as you may have noted in some of his battles, a heck of a lot move devious. (personally, I think the Germans must have given him the blueprints for the 2 pounders the way they keep popping up in that mega campaign) As you may have noted, there are great people on this forum from all over the world, in all age brackets, who are willing to help or game anyone with no reservations. (I just wish that someday I can beat one in a battle). Good luck to you and enjoy the game .

Robot: Until you came aboard I had the honor of being the oldest 69, but alas I give up my seat to you. Ps..1 heart attack, 4 stents, etc. ;) :cool:

Wild Bill -> (7/19/2001 11:22:00 AM)

I take some comfort in these posts. At age 64 and 'maintaining' I'm glad to be here. Someone once said that you would one day begin to hate birthdays. I personally am very thankful for each one that comes around, because each year the ranks are thinner. All ages...doesn't matter...our hearts go in the same direction, loving history and loving gaming. That can be true for almost any age. Wild Bill

Ahh the lovely memories, but I am still a sophomore agewise. It is outstanding that this community involves such a broad spectrum of players. Well here is a tasty little morsel for everyone. Please take a look and enjoy. http://a2war.theunderdogs.org/ Cheers. [ July 22, 2001: Message edited by: nyarlathotep ]

Randy -> (7/23/2001 3:53:00 AM)

:D Hey Truckeye, I'm with you. I'm 46 and before SP I was working on 1/87 scale models, and now its SP. But I found that the transition from plastic to computer icons was pretty easy.

Neil Stalker -> (7/23/2001 4:01:00 AM)

I turn 50 in a month and I have only been playing wargames for a decade but the history of war has held a fascination for me all my life. SPWAW is the best and its been a ball creating with the great editors that come with it.

Don -> (7/23/2001 4:30:00 AM)

I'm a "middle of the roader" at 45. :) Started with AH's "Luftwaffe" and "Panzer Blitz", and recently bought those two games on Ebay just to have them around again.

27 so I'm just a private what comes to great battle of life. :) Well, I did start with ancestors of SPWAW 10-15 years ago. A friend bough first SSI 'Fields of Fire', then I bought 'Kampfgruppe' and finally friend bough 'Typhoon of Steel' on Commodore 64. And since that last game, I've been hooked to every similar game that has come. It was basically same than current SPAW altough controls and graphics were of course diffrent quite diffrent. I can still remember first scenario I played in that game againts human opponent.'Bocage country' or something similar was scenarios name. It was pure chaos :cool:

parusski -> (7/23/2001 5:42:00 AM)

Nobody's old here. We are and shall remain young at heart. I just turned 35 and SPWAW makes me feel like a teen again-playing "Squad Leader" and "Panzer Blitz".

mcbradley -> (7/24/2001 1:59:00 AM)

This is great! So far from 14 to 71! :cool: I’m 44, I think that comes out to be close to the median age here. I’ve been doing SP for only a year now, and am I sorry for what I’ve been missing. I started playing AH Afrika Korps with my dad back in the 60’s, then graduated to Third Reich. Some of the best quality time I've had with him. It was one of the few ways I could extract his WWII experiences out of him. He’s still around (77 and counting), so I hope we can get him to write down some memoirs. When I moved out of the house, I lost my playing partner and wargaming faded into my past. I got back into wargaming in a round-about way from my interest in model-building, which itself was renewed from my love for PC combat flight simulators. When you’re building models, you have a lot of quiet time to think. I was building an IL-2 Sturmovik, when I started getting the urge to play something like Afrika Korps on the PC. That got me to searching about a year back to see if the old AH games had been developed for PC’s (that’s how far out of touch I was). Then I stumbled on the Matrixgames site (thank you Google.com!). Woohoo, talk about nirvana! A whole series of hex-based war games and they were FREE! So now the circle is complete . . . except I haven’t finished that Sturmi yet. :rolleyes: Anyway, it’s interesting to see the age range. Great to see the "life veterans" here. Great to see some younger generations accepting a PC game that isn’t all glitz and blood, too. That’s good, it proves there’s nothing “lame” about exercising your brain instead of your hand-eye coordination. You've invested well, this type of entertainment will NEVER be obsolete. :D O.Bradley

Welcome Sgt Bradley ! How many people here I can read they are enthusiastic about SPWAW !!!!.. A while ago I still remember myself wondering how such a great game (I am referring to SP1 obviously) could be left back , next to the DOS agony...(no comment on SP3) Now Matrix gives to us a new brighter future : SPWAW ! Have you read how many players here tried a lot of other wargames even more popular ? but SPWAW WINS ! A 2D tactical-squad level games still WINS !!!! Now tell your father to write down his memories..we need their experience !

I will always try to persuate ( :D :D :D ) (let us Do what we Can !!!) Matrix to look for another BIG REVOLUTION : after the Windows platform , the security on PBEM games , the enhancements into the editor , and the multiplayer option..finally a Combat Leader more opened to aero-naval features ! But..do not misunderstand me now... THAT IS A PLAN exclusive FOR 14 years old guys here !!!!!! :p (Unless many of us in the meanwhile decide for an hibernation process :D :D )
