I'm not endorsing this, I haven't read it and don't know the guy, but it looks like it should be good.

My grandfather served in New Guinea and the Phillipines. New Guinea in particular was not a great place to be!

Speaking of logistics, one story he told was after the invasion of Biak. He was left behind when most of the 41st Division moved on for refit, because he was an L-2 pilot and was needed at HQ for liason duty. Soon after the division moved on a refrigerated barge full of fresh pork arrived....enough for 20,000 men. Most of them were gone however, and they didn't want it to go bad, so it was 3 weeks of pork for breakfast, pork sandwiches, and how about....pork for dinner? Served with a side of pork, of course....

He had more action-packed stories of course, but I remember the pork one.....
