Voriax -> AI knows Your setup!? (7/17/2001 11:11:00 PM)

Is it possible? I'll tell you an example: I'm testing a small campaign..it's actually finished already but still..I'm in battle 3 with a small German force. My task is to defend..I have bunch of infantry, two PzIV's and two armoured cars. Weather is a snowstorm with visibility of 7. I set up my troops in the village I must hold. I'm especially worried about my tanks so I position the PzIV's in the middle of the village, surrounded by buildings. One ac is postioned well bahind the village, in woods. another ac is below the village, also in woods. So game starts and enemy does it's initial bombardment..2 Pe-2's come strafing. First one targets one of my PzIV's...direct run, no 'sliding' of plane due to searching for target...and the visibility range is so low that the aircraft cannot see the tank from map edge... Okay, this may be bad luck. but the second aircraft arrivs from different direction and targets the other PzIV! I had a save so I reloaded several times and each time the results were same..entry vectors varied but always the PzIV's were targeted. Well..I had a save from deploy phase..so I moved the PzIV's almost at the edge of the map. Now they were left in peace..but the 1st PE-2 now targeted the ac hidden in woods NW of the village...and the 2nd PE-2 targeted the ac south of the village... Again I did several tries and always the ac's were the target..again direct lines of attack, no sliding. Then I moved all tanks in a cluster to the north edge of the map..but still about 20 hexes behind my deployment line...and one Pe-2 appears from hex directly *above* these tanks and attacks them. I finally resorted into moving all armoured vehicles close to the western edge of the map...then they were left alone and AI attacked 2 victory locations. Now as the visibility was so low I don't quite easily believe that the AI had a line of sight to my units at the deployment phase..especially at those tanks in the middle of buildings...so.. Is it possible that AI gets information about your deployment during the deployment phase? Voriax ps. after I'll finish the game I 'switch sides' after turn 1 and see if there were any enemies behind my lines - which I really doubt.

I think that intel comes into play ,as far as the AI knowing beforehand I think that the AI forces automatically move towards likeley avenues of attack , such as open land compared to rough terrain especially where tanks or other armor is concerned. With air attacks from what I've seen aitcraft just go after the big targets first no matter where they are programmed to go.Even when you call an airstrike of your own the aircraft dont always go where you tell them .I've had plenty of my own tanks hit by friendly aircover , especially if I was too close to the original strike zone.Bottom line is I think the AI is extremelt smart tactically.I've been playing spwaw for only about 1 year so I'm still a novice , so the above is just my own opinion.

I can't offer any comfort. I've become so irritated with the AIP air that I just turn it off in the preferences. Its an armor game so I don't mind the lack of air but its certainly not realistic.

How is it that the computer even has an option to call air support during a snow storm?

Voriax -> (7/18/2001 2:18:00 AM)

Sundevil: sorry for a typo..the weather was actually a windstorm..it was snowstorm in another battle :) oggie: I know very well AI's preference for tanks..for example in the same campaign, battle 2 my own aircraft *did* attack my tanks. BUT in such cases they always start their run going towards the designated target..then they begun 'sliding' and search out the tank. Voriax

Why doesn't everybody just realize that computers know everything and rule the universe and get used to it. :D

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Voriax: [QB]Is it possible? Here's my take on it. The AI probably has an advantage in target location for tactical air if the weather is reasonably clear, or if visibility is not too impaired. One thing that used to bug me is in urban environments when you would think tanks would be hard to spot behind buildings; nevertheless the AI would have an uncanny ability to successfully target and damage them. However there are some things you can do that will help. If you feel air attack is a distinct probability, there is nothing that works quite as effectively as two or three 20mm or 37mm AA guns in the immediate vicinity of the precious vehicles. I can not emphasize this enough. Its one thing for a few planes to successfully target the vehicles, but wait till you see how difficult it is to damage them when they are flying through flak fired from less than 300 yards as they approach the targets. It really helps. If you don't have AA then there is one other way you can sharply diminish the chance of the vehicles being spotted, and thats with smoke. If you think air attack is imminent, and no other protection is available, even smoke grenades can be really helpful.

Heh..Thanks anyway Greg even though nothing was new ;) Actually had i played 'normal' campaign I'd purchased AA guns and let it be..but in this campaign initial buy points are good for a rifle co, engineer platoon, 2 PzIVf's and 4 222 armoured cars. Oh and no auxiliaries. Voriax

One thing I was glad to see reduced was a similar type of thing with the AI artillery cheats. In an older version of SP I was defending against an AI Soviet river crossing. As soon as my 88's opened fire they began to draw artillery down on them. So I moved them behind a big hill, no AI unit to spot them. A turn or two later the arty comes down. Moved them back along the road into the woods, and two turns later the arty comes down. So, for the rest of the game I moved those 88's, and any time I unloaded them the arty chased them down. I finally gave up and retreated them off the map edge. Another time I had three Tigers in a line [yes, I know, never bunch up like that on the battlefield :rolleyes: ]. Down comes a B25 or B26 and lays a line of bombs in a perfectly straight line and kills all three :eek: :eek: I've learned to accept that there will always be some form of AI cheating to compensate for it's lack of intelligence. Still, it's damned frustrating to get killed in such an "unfair" way.
