Jagger2002 -> Having a Kampfgruppe rejoin parent organization (11/26/2021 7:08:31 PM)

I had formed a kampfgruppe when needed and later decided to rejoin the unit with its parent unit. I set up to transfer but as I moved units back to its parent unit, I was not allowed to transfer all the KG troops back to parent formation. I was told I was not allowed to reduce the KG below 50 power. So is there a method for disbanding the KG and having their troops and equipment join another formation?

You can disband it, but the troopstypes will be send to the HQ. KG has to have at least 50 combat points.

Seems like an oversight - you can't 'reduce' a KG to less than 50 CP by merging the entirety of the KG back into a larger formation? Seems strange you can't get rid of what are ad hoc units.

SO what, you have to merge back the best/most units, then disband the holdover back to the HQ?

Why disband a KG ?
You can leave it to defend a location.
You can transfer some sicherung or nachtruppen from HQ to the KG and than the original men can rejoin the regular unit.

All those methods would work but they feel like a workaround vs just simply merging back into their original unit.

Agreed, in the normal course of military operations, smaller groups of men and equipment could merge into a more formidable combat unit.

In general I still feel that we should have the option to merge completely back in, however, your reply raises a good question - I'm comfortable moving troops between units, but how do you directly move reserves from the HQ into an existing field unit as you propose, KG or otherwise?

I have been able to merge a KG back to its original unit. Just ignore the warning that it won't work, the warning disappears when all of the troops have been selected to be transferred back. The KG counter disappears as soon as the transfer is done.

Nice to know!

Definitely good to know. But as nikdav mentioned why disband a KG? In most cases, especially considering the 3PP cost of creating the KG, disbanding a KG should be relatively rare. KG's can be very useful.

Splitting infantry bataillons into task forces is very helpful if you need flank protection for your armored spearhead and you have more space to cover than units available.

When the threat is gone you can combine them again and to get better offensive strength out of them (at least I hope so).

That tactic was the absolute killer in my second play through of the Westwall scenario against those zillions of relatively weak German units.

In my first playthrough I diverted too much strength dealing with them while my weaker spearheads were slowed down enough until the German reinforcements arrived and the battle ended in a stalemate. (Nevertheless the game gave me a "major victory" which felt wrong. I think the victory point levels should be adjusted in this scenario.)

I'm wondering that since I've noticed a number of units that don't have enough carry wt. for its manpower, perhaps I could create a KG that could accumulate the extra carry capacity from other units and redistribute it to the deficient ones?

Or you could transfer enough vehicles from one unit to the other to make one unit vehicle transportable. Then one can move quickly and the other is leg slow.
