Tcao -> How to setup a maritime surveillance mission with fighters escort (12/3/2021 5:32:25 PM)

Any idea on how to setup a maritime surveillance with fighter escorts?

1, in single player or scenario design , any LUA script will do the trick?

2, in a PBEM game, where LUA is not an option, so how to setup this kind of mission in PBEM?
my current plan is : setup a rendezvous point for the recon plane and the fighters, assign the recon to a maritime surveillance mission (support mission), then create an AAW PZ with both patrol zone and persecution zone reference point move with recon?
any other idea and suggestions?

The plan you describe sounds quite workable. You could probably be more flexible depending on:

a. the number and area of the MPA missions
b. the BVR range and endurance of your fighters
c. the threat, does it come from one area or is it limited in any way.

I think that I would probably not opt for a close escort as you describe, it doesn't seem efficient but I'm not familiar with the scenario your dealing with. Try and put your fighters in a position where the threat has to transit, or have enough early warning that your MPA can withdraw to an area covered by fighters. Many options without tying the fighters directly to the MPA but if that is what you need to do, your solution will work.

It would be nice if the devs did create a "close escort" mission that allows units to fly as escorts for SUPPORT, or PATROL missions. I can see a bunch of uses for them.

I can also see a number of times when you could assign some of your fighters to "tail" an UNFRIENDLY group of planes as they fly through the area. As of now, there is no way to stay on their "tail" and if the change course, then you have to manually change course in order to follow them. If you get distracted, then you often find that your planes are now miles away from the group that they were tailing. I envision this as "hitching a wagon" to the UNFRIENDLY forces. They would follow them everywhere. Sadly, this feature doesn't exist, or at least not in the way that I would want it to.

Why can't you use moving reference points.

1) Launch the aircraft you want to escort, and the aircraft you want to escort them. Use an AAW Patrol or support mission to put them somewhere convenient and near each other.
2) Create AAW Patrols using waypoints relative to the escorted aircraft. Typically you would orient it along the threat axis.
3) Assign the escorts to the AAW Patrols

This is generally a much better way to manage escorts than the built in escort mission, btw. It requires more user intervention but has more flexibility and you can set things up more smartly rather than relying on the assumptions of the simulation.
