Erik Rutins -> Help New Players on Steam (12/11/2021 12:42:19 AM)

Hi everyone,

If you are an experienced player and have a Steam account, please consider also helping in the Steam forums with new players now joining who may be looking for tips and advice to get up to speed. The more we help people learn the game, the more opponents there will be to choose from.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1775550/discussions/0/

Regards,

- Erik

Why not direct them towards this forum at a minimum? Or is there some legality you can't? If you can't the players can?

I see more players on this forum as a plus, but that is just me.

Very few will survive the journey from birth to old age. The $$$ tag will kill off many in the womb, the complexity will take its toll, then the amount of time spent, then those that don't want to push the mouse button a bazzilion times and a plethora of other reasons. Finally, you will then have a very small cadre left that have the dedication to become H2H opponents. Then I am afraid very few will be at the end for Head-to-Head games :( I hope I am wrong...

Most will become AI players but that is a good thing too :)

But directing to this website with the knowledge here is a much better start than on the Steam forum :( The Steam forum can be very toxic at times.

OH!!! Gotta love it, my 6,666 post!!!!

Erik Rutins -> RE: Help New Players on Steam (12/11/2021 2:46:01 AM)

Oh, I've already posted some links to bring them here, but many will prefer to stay and discuss on Steam, that's just how it is.

HLYA, you're killing me.

I'm one that prefers Steam. This is not the only game I play. I like the convenience of being able to follow and post on a variety of game forums. Steam facilitates that - all with one login / account.

Steam users play a variety of games as well. As a result, they will most likely have higher standards when it comes to UI consistency and usability.

As far as cost, don't know how much of a deterrent that will be when you consider Steam allows a refund, whereas Matrix has a no refund - no exception policy. I would pay more for a refund option.

Pushing them here is not the answer. Many will not bother having to create, yet another account, to come here. If there is no Steam forum support, they simply will not buy it.

Steam also facilitates user reviews. Better be ready for that (i mean, to address their issues - not send out the fanbois to inflate..)

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: Help New Players on Steam (12/11/2021 8:26:13 PM)

On all the game forums you visit where is the majority of the information for WITE2 at at the moment. I am sure this website has the most at the moment. Doesn't seem that hard to figure out that you point people to where possible answers are. People can decide for themselves if they want that resource. Their choice, not ours but at least the door is open to the resource.

Man I popped over to the Steam discussions and talk about a bunch of bashing the game and the developers. That place has some vile negative discussions, lots of mis information and miss understanding of the game.

I don't like the Steam platform so I'm biased anyway but I always think it caters mainly for people who like FPS games or intergalactic space marines with planet busting laser tech. Games like this, WitW or WitP.AE are never going to suit the mainstream gaming crowd.

Yes, I feel you are probably correct.

vinnysix -> RE: Help New Players on Steam (12/12/2021 6:13:56 AM)

I know! Steam opens up to a different audience.....

Tailspintommy -> RE: Help New Players on Steam (12/12/2021 8:10:41 AM)

The 'benefits' of opening up to the Steam audience could be a double edged sword.
Games like this and the other Gary Grigsby classics are aimed at a very niche market and given the way the Steam forums and reviews work, I fear the noise made by people these games are never going to appeal to, is going to deter the few who may otherwise have been interested.
Even on the Matrix Forums, I'm sure we've all seen negative comments which boil down to someone saying. "I was actually expected to learn a few basics and do some reading before I could start blasting everything in sight, then I'd lost most of my units by turn 5 so the game's rubbish".

I'm the first to admit, I'm not a 'gamer' as such.. I enjoy the Grigsby classics, the Silent Hunter sub sims. 'Rise of Flight' WWI flight sim and the IL2 flight sims.. And that's it.
My step-son, on the other hand has had games consoles from being a kid and loves fps games. He can spend hours chasing around a sandbox, looking for life and weapons boosters but dismisses my games as being boring and too complicated.

Neither view is "wrong", they're just different but there's a gulf between them.. Where it matters is that Matrix is a business which has to make a profit and the trade off between a larger audience and bad press must be calculated. That's Erik's domain and why he gets the big bucks for taking the responsibility.

Miss Understanding finally gets how fuel consumption works:

I come over from Hoi4 to WitE2 and I definetly think the game can appeal to some of the HoI audience. If you look for a more historical experience and for more of a challenge it is just a so much better game. It is much more hard core of course but at the same time more accessable than WitE. Contributing to this is the option to automate the air war, the option to automate depots and the decision to abstract partisans. I sometimes wonder if there is something more which could be done without harming the game for the grognards. I definetly like the smaller scenarios because the big ones have so many counters. Maybe the option to automate an army group could be added.

I think it is a bit outdated opinion I must say. Steam is not only about 'Half life' FPS platform. There are engineering games such as Factorio. Audiance depends on a game. Secondly if wargames wants to be more popular it should go regional pricing. I once purchased War in the East and Pacific Admiral ED in Matrix store (10 years ago) now in 2021 it is not possible. With Steam recently I purchased War in The East 2 with 119,00 TL price it is 1176.99 TL in Matrix store. 10 times more. Figure out what is a risk.

gamer78 -> RE: Help New Players on Steam (12/12/2021 7:52:09 PM)

Another good example about Steam gaming good intentions: 1$= 1 to 2.5 TL at most fixed currency still (may change in future of course) but in reality 1$= 13,8843 TL.

Just I wonder if purchase price was let's say 500-700$ instead of 80$ for this game. I wonder. [;)]

Exactly. Not to mention how many games require their own set of skills - in many cases intellectual skills that many wargamers are unable to provide. Steam is also home of Paradox's games, GalCiv games and many others that could be considered "boring and too complicated" just fine, but that they actually sell. Trade in Europa Universalis IV is a whole subgame as complex as the air war in WitW - and that's one subgame.

The whole "games for intellectuals" argument always smells of elitism. Advanced Squad Leader players play "the best WWII wargame ever made" (pro tip: no, they don't). Same with the WiF crowd. Then a DotA 2 player could counter about how he, too, must think of tactics, advanced planning and study of his adversaries' play style - in split seconds. He cannot sit down and spend one hour planning a move.

And then we have chess, and the tongue-in-check explanation published on Chess.com about why they still beat videogames.

https://www.chess.com/article/view/chess-king-of-games

Generally speaking, if someone is convinced that a certain game or genre is superior to the others, he should go out and play more - with a very ample meaning of the word "play".
